Despite some mishaps, in today’s video, we managed to overcome some unforeseen obstacles to create a $177 PC with a clean, white sheen that can play any game in 2023! We started with a Dell Optiplex OEM PC from an office, added a GTX 1650 Super and spray painted the exterior to create this beast of an ultra budget build. It only took drying off the rain we left it out in to get there.

Glad to FINALLY see some common sense around the use of a 6-pin adapter. As long as you are using a card with a power draw that is within spec (1650S, 1060, 1660) and ALWAYS use a dual SATA to 6-pin, this is perfectly fine. I have done it dozens of times, stress testing the system for 12+ hours each time and I have never even had a cable get warm, much less burn up. People need to stop with the "fire hazard" histrionics and educate themselves on safe current draw.
@ZachsTechTurf

Thanks for the reassurance! Glad to hear you did THAT much stress testing, I think we are in the clear :)

@@JustinsGarage No, it is NOT. Like anything, a few people who don't know what they are doing (see the whole 4090 power connector fiasco) have done stupid things like not connecting things correctly or overdrawing the wiring/connectors and caused issues. If you know what you are doing, use quality connectors, and (again) make sure your card won't overdrawn, there is no problem with this.
@JustinsGarage

@@drawdeep these videos give people false expectations. I sell refurb optiplexs and I run into this all the time. People see a video like this and have crazy expectations and are either sorely disappointed or break the machine someone. I agree, if you know what you are doing it shouldn’t be a problem, but most people who are building a sub $200 gaming build don’t.

@@JustinsGarage So, have you had an actual customer's machine catch fire? If so, would love to hear the details...
I was inspired to build a PC when you posted the $190 gaming pc with the Dell OptiPlex 5040. So, I bought a 5040 with a i6500 and 8GB of ram and 1tb of HDD storage just like the one you have. But I paid $100 for mine. I also up a 500 nvme storage for the m.2. I also bought a GTX 1650 super and had to buy the adapter 6 pin thing. The thing about my GPU is where the 6-pin power connect is in the side, so it didn't bother the side panel, so it closed perfectly find. Overall, I spend at least $290 dollars on my PC! Thank you for inspiring me to build this.

I got a Intel Core i5-6500, 16GB Ram, 256GB SSD, DVD-RW, WiFi) Win 10 Pro for 100 dollars ( optiplex 7040 sff)
i5-6500 is the processor that my gaming PC has, was good but not mind-blowing in 2015ish, and it hasn't really slowed down. I can count on one hand the number of times that it caused me any issues. Between crypto mining and the advent of the switch/steam deck, very few new games are released that can't be comfortably played on a i5-6500 and a decent GPU/SSD.
You can get an angled pcie adapter to fit the original gpu if that is the only issue fitting that gpu. Also, the optiplex 5040 uses ddr3l not ddr4, only the 7040 uses ddr4 in that generation.

oh my lord that sata power cable almost made me give up the ghost The 1650/1660S use the PCI-E power for most of their components. There may be a single drmos for the core, but usually all of the other power rails are powered off of the 6-8 pin power cable. From what I've seen, most 1650 Supers (without LEDs) have 3-4 DrMOS that are powered off the 12v rail generated by the 6-pin power cable (6 pin may be only 2-3 phases), as well as 5v, 1.8v, and Memory power rails. The 6-pin 1650 Super uses about 100W total under full stress. Even if 20-25w of that power is drawn from the pci-e slot, that would mean that about 75-80 would be drawn from the 6 pin connector, and that's without factoring in power spikes that happen during gameplay. You generally don't want to run at the thermal limits of wires as they tend to get hot, become less efficient, get hotter, rinse, repeat, and then they melt.
i made the exact same build but i am just too worried about the power supply, what should i do?

Do not use NVMe drives on gaming machines, especially older. Reason : they take up PCIe lanes that could be need later (by GPU) . Also, on older machines NVMe is not faster than SATA .

3:54 They can always underclock or undervolt with little to no FPS drops if they feel like the PSU isn't up to snuff, it's also a neat way to reduce temperatures and prolong a graphics cards lifespan ❄❤the shady and unknown brand H.I.S RX560 that we bought and use for my PC is still up and running on for 4 years now with temps at 54 Celsius compared to 66 by default when there was no undervolt applied 🥰
I thought the dell 5040 was ddr3?
can you replace the power supply
@hoodie_ninja
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, but you need to buy an adapter to connect it to the motherboard, plus in order to fit in that case properly it would have to be a shorter than usual PSU and preferably modular as there's essentially zero room for cable management. By the time you found a suitable PSU and got the adapter, it would go from $180 to well over $250. And you'd still have the issue of needing a short GPU to be able to plug it in.
@ZachsTechTurf
Жыл бұрын
It wouldn't be worth it. It's a unique form factor and requires adapters for the cables into the motherboard. These types of builds are usually only worth it if you don't plan on upgrading the PSU
