So nice to see this lens' performance on your video, it's really makes me want to have one. Since there is a new DN version for sony , and the second-hand price of old HSM is almost half of new DN's price , which would you recommend to buy?

It's the f/2 for me. Such a reliably beautiful lens. Also, it goes anywhere, doesn't attract too much attention and is an ideal walk around option, especially for Sony a and Lumix S cameras.

A bit late to the party, but the f2 is just awesomely great lens. A must have for a Sony Alpha camera. Very quick focus, dead silent (very pleasant tiny sound of the motor, asmr-like 😄), the feel of the metal shell is from another world.... A bit soft wide open, especially if you are used to the heavy Sony Zeiss/G master glass, but the softness is well compensated by the incredible contrast and the special loxia-style pop. I think it was actually designed to match the Loxia rendering. 🙂 Awesome, awesome, awesome lens 👍 Just perfect for a small full frame e-mount camera. Perfecto.

Tom, this is a wonderful comparison of Sigma 35 range. Have you done a video or are you going to do a video comparing the brand new Sony 35 mm 1.4 g Master to the sigma 1.2? I have the 1.2 right now, and I absolutely love it but now I'm curious about the 1.4 g master.

Thanks, glad you liked the video. Yes, we're eager to get our hands on the Sony 35mm f/1.4, but I don't think we'll be able to get a copy until it's released. Comparing it to the Sigma f/1.2 is on our radar though, so keep any eye out for that video in the near future (hopefully).

Thanks Stefan. I agree. I just wish it wasn't so big and heavy (and it had a lock switch for the manual aperture ring, but I know that's not a big deal to some people). But I guess that's kinda unavoidable with a maximum aperture of f/1.2. Personally, I hope they remake the f/1.4 in a DG DN version.

Thanks for the comprehensive review Tom! If you ever get a chance, I'd love to see a comparison between the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN vs the I series 65mm f2.0. I know this is an odd comparison but I'd be interested to see the difference in rendering between f1.4 and f2.0 at equivalent distances from the subject as well as when the subject is framed the same in the picture (i.e. how does the background blur and compression compare for headshots, full body, etc). 65mm is a super interesting but unfamiliar focal length haha.

I prefer the size for now. I just bought Sigma 20 f2 and I really like this lens. For 35mm f1.2 I bought the manual lens Voigtlander.

Before the f/2, Sigma only offered the f/1.4 and f/1.2, both of which are heavier and not really suitable for APS-C cameras. The f/2 fills that void and is also a great lightweight travel option for full frame cameras.

what does the best for focus breathing and how do you deal with the focus by wire ?

Unfortunately we didn't test for focus breathing due to time constraints, so I don't have an answer for you there. The focus by wire system on the f/1.2 isn't great - the other two are much more responsive. I dive in to this topic much more in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fWyt17KxpNyug7A.html

The 35mm f2 wins hands down for one single reason: it's on your camera! I had the 35mm f1.2 and sold it as it's very heavy and bulky. At first, I thought the weight was manageable, sadly it was not.....I miss its rendering though!

I had learned over the year in the photography world is sticking with OEM when come to lenses. Yes OEM is super expensive… but it worth every pennies !

Ahhh, I was confused for a second I was like there’s a 35mm 1.2 lens?? How come I’ve never heard of it? But then the price was mentioned and it all came back to me.. 😅

I will take the f2 for the SL2-S due to the fact that it is designed for mirrorless from the ground up rather than a converted DSLR lens which the 1.4 is. I am an L-mount shooter as well and I have both the S1R and the SL2-S. I currently have the Sigma 45mm f2 DGDN which is the same type of lens as the 35/2. I also have the 70mm Macro which is a converted DSLR lens like the 35/1.4 HSM. The DG DN lenses perform so much better in both S-AF, C-AF, and tracking with hardly any pulsing on both cameras which have the latest FW installed. I have also read other reviews that converted Sigma lenses doesn’t perform as well on the contrast detect AF of the L-mount alliance cameras which is the same as my experience.

I personally am going with the F2 as (after years of using old 1.4 primes) the “experience” shooting with a lens is now my leading factor. Obviously if anyone is considering these three, you’re considering three great options (so the question of sharpness etc - should be expected to be great) I shot with the 1.2 and did it with a battery grip for a more “balanced” feel - I disagree that the 1.4 and (especially) 1.2 feel anything close to balanced on an a7 series body. Especially the mark 1 to mark III (except the siii thank you SONY) IF your work justifies the 1.2, then you’ll have an INCREDIBLE tool to help create. If not, why deal with that huge brick tugging on the front of your camera? The 1.4 is meant for DSLR and thus why bother with that option, especially when there are so many other 35mm options. (Albeit mostly at 1.8)

Did you get it finally ? And if so, do you see a big drop in quality ( in higher aperture ) ?

For me personally there is no reason that I would ever need anything brighter than f1.8 The concerts that I have shot have been just fine with it and the bokeh and background separation is already great. And for being such a nice compact 35mm, the F2 id definitely be taking with me to more places.

Not sure how that would help? The 1.2 didn't get a point for price because it's so expensive, but the other two did.

My conclusion of All this. Sigma should Do a redone 35mm 1.4 dgdn. This lens would be more affordable than the 1.2 and sigma could get rid of All the little shortcomings of the other lenses.

Strange test. The cheapest lens won the price performance categories and the expensive f1.2 won the image quality tests. By examination of the scores, the f1.4 is three times worse than the f2 and the f1.2. The purpose of a lens is to faithfully reproduce a scene, possibly with special effects like bokeh, isolating the subject. Perhaps the true summary might be "you get what you pay for, so pick what your budget allows." I think the purpose of the lens is also important. You won't take a lot of landscapes below f2. If you are doing portrait glamor shots, a fast aperture can be of value. So besides "what's my budget?" we might also ask, "what's it for ?". Even so, an interesting review.

In my opinion the f1.4 wins. the f1.2 is just to big and heavy, and the smaller lens is f2.

I think it's the best compromise for exactly the reasons you've stated. I just hope Sigma bring out a revised version soon that offers improved image quality (sharper and no CA) 🤞
