Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary (Photo & Video Review)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
A few weeks ago, Sigma announced it's "I Series" range of lenses and I was lucky enough to test out the brand new Sigma 65mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary lens. This week, however, I'll be taking a look at another lens within this I Series family, namely the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary Lens to see whether it's just as good as it's 65mm sibling.
The Sigma I Series range of lenses are designed to be small and lightweight, but also boast impressive build- and image quality. In this lens review, I discover whether this Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN lens is really all it's cracked up to be...

Thanks for the review! I’ve purchased this lens and it’s a great walk-around prime for my Lumix S5, a joy to use.

Haha! You're the first person to mention my SD sweater. I love the Yes Theory channel - great content. And their clothing line is great too. Thanks for watching 👍
Great and thorough review! I feel like this lens, with its aperture control ring, is a good pair for the Sony a7c which is missing a front dial.

@@TomCalton Indeed mate. Merry Christmas 🎅
Started with Voigtlaender lenses on Sony, and moved on to Fuji and their XF lenses. Love the lenses, but do miss the all-metal build. Looking forward to these I series lenses on L mount.

I think Sigma is definitely on to a winner with these small, well-built lenses. Super nice choice for travel and street photographers 🤘
Finally sigma has listened to the feedback about making smaller lenses. They realized having a brick isnt practical for most hobbyists.

That’s why I never bought sigmas no matter how good the reviews
Thanks for the great review! This lens looks great but somehow it's released a bit too late for me as I already own the 35mm 1.2 Sigma Art for "serious people photography", a (quite nice) cheap and light Samyang 35mm 1.8 (as walkaround lens) and a Voigtlander 35mm 1.2 Nokton for slow manual retro style photography.

Thanks Stefan - I always enjoy receiving your comments! I hope you're keeping well bud.
From your experience, can you give a quick rundown of how this compares to the sony 1.8? Also, in your latest video description (as of Feb 8th) you listed the Sigma 85mm 1.8 instead of 1.4 ;)

Unfortunately I can't as I've not tested the Sony 35mm f/1.8 yet, but it's on my list of lenses I'd like to get my hands on. 😊
I'd like to see how it stacks up side by side with the Sigma 35mm f/1.2

Between the 65mm F2, 45mm 2.8, 35mm F2, & 24mm 3.5 i-series DC DN prime lenses. I wonder if they plan to release a portable DC DN zoom lens. Maybe a 24-55 F2.8.. I'd be for it.

😂 Let me know if I can help at all!
What about the focus breathing?? I have the 45mm and it has almost no focus breathing issues, but as I can see the 35mm has some focus breathing issues?
@TomCalton
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Irene. Focus breathing isn't something I test for unfortunately. Is this something that really effects your work? I can honestly say that in 12 years of capturing video I have never really worried about focus breathing. I'm interested to know why this would be a concern for you? Thanks!
I'd more like to see how it stacks up against the Sony 35mm

@@TomCalton thanks. currently own the samyang 35/1.8 (sonly alphablog mention it is the sharpest out of the sony and sigma) so would be interesting to see your opinion on it - thinking of upgrading as this looks like a cracking lens

@@TomCalton Hi Tom! is that video available? I couldn't find it, but I might not looking well enough. Thanks!
how about close focus and breathing?
@TomCalton
3 жыл бұрын
Currently I don't include tests for these things in my videos, though close focusing is something we're going to add to future reviews. Focus breathing isn't something I think we'll test unfortunately - most primes have breathing issues, so I feel like I'd just be stating the obvious in every single video. That said, if we get enough requests for it then I'll certainly reconsider. Thanks for the input!
Good review but why just the one f-stop test with the chart?
@TomCalton
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! In answer to your question, I only test wide open for 2 reasons. 1) The widest aperture on a lens usually offers the poorest image quality, so, if a lens offers good image quality at this setting it can only get better when you start closing it down. Therefore, not a huge point in testing it other than wide open IMHO 2) Test charts are a fairly dry subject and I can see from my analytics that a significant number of people click away if this section runs on for too long. So, I try to keep this part short and sweet as it's a necessary evil.
Yes I want to see how this lens stacks up against the 1.4 lens

Never tried that lens. Though for me, f/2.8 just isn't fast enough. I LOVE images with a super shallow depth-of-field. I have a problem. 😂
