While I'm not absent-minded, I'm also not the most focused person in the world. I'll never understand how you can forget to put the vehicle in park. That's as reflexive as starting it up. Baffles me.

Never thought about it possibly being a manual? Newer cars dont let you turn the engine off if you're not in park. And older ones usually dont let you take the key out

@@sicklygreyfoot here 90% drive manuals. And a lot of people dont use the handbrake, especially in automatics. In a manual, you don't shift to anything if you wanna park, unless there's a big hill

My car has been parked the whole winter without the hand brake to avoid having the brake pads of my rear drum brakes sticking to the drum. So I park it in first gear only. I'm using my hand brake only when not at home like on public parking spots and such.

I has nothing to do with the "handbrake". In the USA, almost all cars have automatic gear boxes, and for the most part, in Drive, even at idle they move. This is why you have to keep you foot on the brake pedal. People have been run over by their own cars because of forgetting to put the selector in "Park". Imagine that you leave your F-150 V8 in drive and step out of the vehicle, trip and fall down underneath. This happened before. There should be a safety feature for those who forget to put their vehicle in park while the engine is running and they decide to step out. To complicate matters, some car makers have complicated the drive modes from being a selector to some kind of electronic button. People are getting easily confused now.

In the USA the 'parking-brake' is usually referred to incorrectly as the 'emergency-brake', plus it's often foot-operated so drivers become very lazy, relying on their automatic-transmission to hold it in 'Park', but that's not what it's designed to do full-time!

These always make me think of those car accident insurance claim forms where people describe: “I glanced at my mother-in-law and drove into the lake.” 😂😂😂

Try practicing counter steering, it's amazingly effective in situations like this. In this case he should have (apart from paying attention to what he was doing of course) _pushed_ the handlebar on the right hand side. Push right, go right. Push left, go left. Sounds illogical, but it works. Could save your life sometime.

as it shows on the video, i think some of them clearly don't have their license, you can see they don't know how to deal with the commands (9:00 for example)

Almost every car out there has it in the center, even the ones with new electronic press button ones, for EXACTLY this kind of situation where the driver can't do it themselves. I guarantee this older Nissan sedan has it in the center like almost every other car. Why are you guys even trying to defend this? She panicked and did nothing. End of story. I had a moment like that myself once. I was reverse parking and I was trusting my parking sensors too much. I knew I was close to the car parked in the spot behind me but I didn't know how close exactly. The sensors didn't light up so I kept crawling backwards until I hit the car behind me. The sensors didn't light up at any point. Luckily, I was going at a snail's pace so there was no damage to either car, and the owner of the other car was nearby so we settled it quickly. We basically decided to pretend nothing happened because there was no damage. I certainly don't trust the sensors anymore.

@@honcore1443 You can't see where your rear ends by using mirrors. That's something you should just "know" about your car, and that I have gotten a feeling for since, but the point is that I didn't think I needed to until my sensors failed me.

@@honcore1443 The back mirror shows you what's behind, but if you don't have experience using it for parking, you won't know where the car's rear end is, especially if it's a sedan like mine so the rear end isn't where the window is. Again, yes, I should have learned to park using mirrors sooner than I did, but if you don't already know the dimensions of your car, you can't just use this method the first time you need it. It takes practice.
