    I recommend doing this routine 3x at least, 5x at most a week and resting for 2 days at least. Also take into account all the other activities that you are doing weekly like other kinds of drumming practice, work, exercise, everything adds up. Hence the intensity and consistency looks different for everyone. Some need to practice more, some need to pace themselves. You might have to stop other kinds of intense activities that work your legs and feet and devote more into double bass training to ensure that you have enough consistency yet don't over fatigue them. Making double bass a priority is essential for speed and control. It is one of the hardest things around to be good at. Adjust the entire routine's speed to fit your current thresholds. Stick to 1 tempo for an entire week or 3 practice sessions at least. Then go to the next and do that tempo for 3 sessions or for that whole week. If you increase by 1bpm or 1% you will increase your bpm by 48 in a year and that is A LOT. If you're not interested in building fill vocabulary, then you can skip exercises 8 and 9. But they will help you build a better overall facility of using double bass if you do them. Just that the pattern work can be more challenging to some than the other exercises so you have to slow them down a lot more at first. PDF to routine here (free) www.artofdrumminghq.com/product-page/double-bass-routine-exercises Hope this helps, remember Practice + Patience = Progress

    I would also suggest working harder on your left. I got this from thomas lang but its also kinda common sense, but do something like 1 bar of 4/4 8th noted on your right, then 3 bars on your left I also would switch it up and do the right for 1 beat then the other 3 beats do the left. Do any variation you can think of like that Its helped a lot with my left foot control since i tend to alternate all the time unlike more drummers who will always lead with right foot on triplets or quintuplets It also inadvertently helped with my speed too

  • @ArtOfDrummingHQ

    @ArtOfDrummingHQ

    Excellent suggestion. Totally agree 💯 the weak foot needs 3x the amount of work to catch up and that's usually where people are capped when it comes to progress.

Thanks

    make sure the pedals are not too loose in tension. Or too tight that you have trouble adapting. I use maxed spring tension on my pedals but trained gradually to get here. The tension needs to help support the weight of your foot and also help with the rebound of the beaters. Every other setting I don't mess with. The block you're talking about is what prevents people from playing faster. The block exists like a boss fight. You have to slay the boss to advance. Only a small percentage can advance because this boss is hard. Very hard. All the best practice and patience :D need anymore help just ask!

    Woah! You just helped this jazz trained drummer with a right leg condition to finally take on double-pedal. My friend gave me one of his double pedal saying I was so eager to try it but I never really had the nerve to set it up to practice seriously until now. I just followed all the routine with just my feet on the floor up until the fill-in patterns, and I could actually do it! Sure, it was far from perfect - and far from a perfect way of practicing - but if I can do it, anyone can. I've been playing for nearly 20 years and haven't found anything motivating me to seriously practice again between rehearsals and shows. Something in the flow of this routine really works, and my leg feel better than before after the stretches! Thank you so much!!!

I'd like to share my own experience, which is to do the exercises involving groove (hihat + snare) legs only so as to remove any dependence from the other limbs. Also same exercise exchanging lead foot and also each foot separately (e.g. for straight 8ths I do just the "end" with the left foot, or even try to play the "e" in 16th mode etc). Lots of permutations by following a limb isolation approach.

    Very helpful. I can do this now completely on time. Took me a month. 2 hours everyday after work I practice feet only until I got that down then I throw in my hands after a week of feet only. Now I have altered this a bit. When you do the single foot isolation exercise I don't do one foot at a time because I needed to feel and compare so I trade off 3 on right 3 on left then I do 5 on right and 5 on left back to back. It helped me compare and get accurate feeling on both feet. However I do isolation on limbs sometimes for a night still. This is great. Thank you.

    Hi, thank you SO MUCH for these lessons! I realized that my left foot was in serious need of improvement from working on your exercise #5 - even with feet alone the left is much weaker compared to my right. I've come to the (most obvious) conclusion that if I ever hope to gain speed and precision with my double bass rolls, then both feet need to be at least CLOSE to the same level of control. I would previously work on singles and doubles for my left foot alone, but exercise #5 approaches this problem from a completely different angle - 3's & 5's! AWESOME! Thanks again!! 😁😎👍

    Hi! thank you for the video, I've been practicing this method for 2 weeks now. I have a question about exercise #6 (1.7x tempo for a minute): in this exercise I feel that my technique is wrong and it's very hard for me to do it, you said tempo can be slower, I feel comfortable playing it at a lower speed than exercise #3,4. Is it correct to lower this exercise so much? One more question, I want to learn ankle tecnique and you on your channel advised how to do it (video where you tapping on the floor), how do you advise to combine these exercises with routine and at what tempo can I start this exercises to develop ankle technique?

  • @ArtOfDrummingHQ

    @ArtOfDrummingHQ

    7 ай бұрын

    Oh you certainly can lower the video to where you're more comfortable for that exercise. Everyone's built differently and on different paths along their journey. My routine cannot possibly cater to every individual in just the exact right way in terms of tempo and bpm increase. I suggest trying the whole video slower and read the pinned comment if you haven't. I added lots of details there on how you can use this routine. As for the ankle technique, you definitely want to start them at whatever speed you are able to roughly do the ankle technique at, could be 100, could be 110, only you can find that out yourself. And apply the same practice format I shared in my pinned comment. Take another 10minutes to practice your ankle technique on top of this double bass routine. So it's a total of 20 minutes, no more than 4x a week. Always rest to let the muscles fortify. And repeat this same process for a year.

    Been practicing a lot and was excited to get home from work to try this today. Turns out my feet, ankles, and legs didn’t work at all. Couldn’t even do 16th notes at 110bpm when normally that tempo is just fine for me LOL. Looks like I might need to take a few days off from the drums and then come back to it and try again 😢 Also that beat that’s from Matt and/or the other guy, that’s actually hard to play! As each quarter note is hitting with right foot, left foot, snare, then repeat. But as you try to speed it up it just get super confusing and entangling. I struggled to do that at 60bpm and here you are at 150 making it seem like nothing 😅

  • @ArtOfDrummingHQ

    @ArtOfDrummingHQ

    Жыл бұрын

    Oh hey yes probably a sign that you've been practicing too much and your muscles need 1-3 days to rest to recover. Double bass is very intensive and I too can't do it as well if I'm fatigued already. The Matt pattern is optional, as in it's just a vocabulary building section, you'd build solid consistency just with the 1st 7 exercises. And you can do simpler fill vocabulary exercises. But if it does sound cool to you, just slow it down and do it in parts. Like just learn the 1st 4 notes, then just 1 bar. I've been practicing and using that pattern for 4 years already. So it definitely didn't come easy for me in the beginning.

    Hey, i got to your videos over shorts and the Trick drive shaft short. I really like your way to explain. Myself learned that beside the drums building up muscles (calf and hips/thighs), core strength and stability and stretching them properly gave me a lot of progress and confidence. Especially bringing up my weaker arm and leg at the same muscle power, stability and endurance like my main ones. Now i am training my ankle technique. Do you tried to "find" your comfort tempo to feel the swing? Like i am starting at 190 and could do thr motion with both of my feed for like 4 min without much effort. You made one video where you told to using in midtempo 150-180(190) both ankles and hips/thighs. Did you started thst from lower bpm or higher bpm?

    I also want to know the basic movement of your foot / ankle / thigh and which muscle group you are using while doing the high bpm double base

    I’m 15, and I’ve been playing the drums and double pedal since I was 8. For some reason my left leg has been stuck at 140bpm for years. My right leg is comfortable up to 170bpm, but everytime I try to get my left leg up to speed I either spasm out, or I am able to do it for at least 15 seconds before my calf starts tightening and spasming. I’ve tried spring tension, seat height, everything! But I can’t seem to train my left leg to go above 140bpm. I don’t know what to do anymore

    Brilliant video like always! I’m excited to slowly build up my speed. I stopped playing because I got so disheartened of being stuck at 145. I’m hoping this will break my rut. Would you recommend anything else to increase speed or just stick to these exercises and increase the tempo 1bpm weekly?

    Stick to these exercises 4x a week. 1bpm increase every week. Let me know how it goes after 1 month :D optimising your pedal spring tension also helps. Make sure it's not too light(doesn't support your leg weight enough) or too heavy(you have to use too much effort to push it down)

    Amazing! I’ve spent quite a while mucking with my spring tension to get it comfortable without being too tight so I’ll stick it out and see how I go!
