The XLS with the Moonroof and Rear A/C had the Touring Package, they also had a little bit nicer suede type seat covers. The 2001-2002 XLS/Touring Package had the LSD in the rear. 2003-2006 Did have the XLS available, and with the touring package it had the same upgrades except no LSD. I sold them new back in 2002-2004, had both the 2002 XLS and the 2003 XLS both with the Touring Package. Sorry I had to let the 2003 go back in 2007. I had Ironman springs and KYB struts back then, running 285/75/16s! Awe crap, now I want another one. Great Video!

It's FAR easier to find a Gen 3 than another Gen 2.5 :/ As usual, you're one of just a couple here on KZread that I come to for info. Thanks! You said about swapping the 4.9 ratio transfer case into a 2003-2006. As the 4.9 box is manually actuated would that mean needing to swap the electronic actuators for the manual mechanism? Or are the older manual boxes compatible with the electronic actuators? Super useful video btw, I’ve had my eye on a gen1 shogun but after seeing a few of these modded gen3s it’s got me thinking.. Also you said about the electronic traction control motors going bad on those newer models, if I did go with swapping in an LSD do you know if it’s possible to run the older more reliable vacuum brake boosters and do away with the traction control? Have you had any experience with swapping an LSD into one with factory traction control? It feels like the LSD would lock up when the tc is doing its thing and screw with things? The picture on the dash kinda suggests the transfer box has a centre differential? Is that right or is it permanently locked, sending drive to the front axle, and when you shift to 4wd, it locks in the hubs? I’m coming from a Land Rover defender which has all 4 hubs permanently “locked”, always 4wd, but you lock the centre (usually open) diff to use what people would normally call 4wd.

It's also referred to an Exceed. Not forgetting the diesel engines are way more than petrol (in Kenya). Also, would you mind letting me know if swapping to 5-spd Auto transmission is a straight fit? We have a 03 that doesn't use oil, never has but if you change the crank, cam seals and valve cover gaskets when changing the timing belt it keeps oil leaks at a minimum. Sunroof is another subject but as long as you don't open it it's not a problem and the 4wd all wd is great for sand snow.

I like the 2003+ V6 3.8L motor versions we have a few of in the USA. I have two with over 225,000 miles, all original, no rebuilding. I've had all previous generations also, with high miles. They are better than Toyota, Nissan (way better), USA brands, and any European competitors I've driven, tested or owned. One thing to do when present ASAP: remove the secondary intake butterflies that are in the intake plenum, or fasten them with permanent thread locker or via welding. I just remove them as they do nothing. From factory, they commonly come loose and damage the cylinders or valves, around 135,000 to 160,000 miles, some sooner. Ask me how discovered this? 😆 And spray any bushings with coconut or similar food oil, and suspension bolts with light anti-rust oil once a year. Will save your ass in climates with salts.

Is the Tiptronic 5-speed transmissions in the Gen 3 the same transmission found in the Gen 2.5 (GDI) Pajeros? If so I’ll stay away from those GDIs then. They have 40 more hp but at the cost of being the first publicly available direct injection vehicle; it has some kinks to say the least. If the transmission is also going to have some woes, best to stay away from it entirely.

  • @montanamontero

@@montanamontero yeah I’ve got a JDM importer very close to where I live so we get a lot of GDIs posted on Facebook marketplace etc. haven’t heard great things about the longevity and complexity of the DOHC 3.5 6G74 GDI, but performance wise they are superior in every way. Curious if you’d ever look into the 3.8L 6G75 conversion for Gen 2 Monteros. Apparently pretty straight forward. It sounds like the most ideal platform is the Gen 2.5 with the SOHC engine but all you need is the block and head out of a Galant (380) and everything else from the stock SOHC 3.5 basically bolts ups. Uses factory ECU. I think the factory fuel mapping can work but might get knocking if you use anything other than 91/93. The biggest hurtle is the 3.8L comes with a knock sensor factory while the SOHC never came with one and is optimized on 87 octane. So a reflash would probably be necessary if you don’t want to have to run premium all the time.

@@montanamontero are u meaning the 5 speed manual or 5 speed auto? I'm in Australia and I've got a 5 speed auto in a 3.5 from factory.

Auto. We also got the 3.5 with 5 spd auto in the 01-02 limited models. That’s a solid option, although I still prefer the 3.8

3.2 diesel. Legendary. Oil changes at 7500kms and EGR delete keeps the soot out of the manifold. Easy to work on too. Replace timing chain tensioner and guide. Real quick easy job and not expensive in parts. Good oil and good filters rewards you with epic reliability as with any car really.

@@chrro466 I might buy Pajero one day with that 3.2 DiD engine (most common in Finland). Prices are going lower because Finland taxes diesel with extra tax (diesel tax for Pajero is about 950€ - 1200€ per year) + annual car tax (about 400€ per year). Instead if you have petrol version the tax is only that 400€ car tax per year. Thank you government :D

@@Jack_of_Helsinki quite the opposite here, the Pajeros are going up in price because no one wants to pay the NZ governments new car tax. And diesel is way cheaper than petrol here. $1.60 currently. And everyone has diesel utes here they are our top four/ five monthly sales in new vehicles. Always

I bought a Montero with 73,000 miles on it. At 6 months (2000 miles later it consumed 1/4 of oil). I found out because of a particular sound it makes when it is cold, as if it was missing oil lol
