I found a $500 Mitsubishi montero on facebook marketplace! the previous owner was told by a shop that it had a snapped timing belt and needed a new engine. in this video i attempt to save it and get it back on the road.

Deleted my secondary butterfly valves. Happy I got it before it went thru. Still drives fine, now have a bung in front and back. Rod and all is gone. No noticeable difference driving.
Wow you’re an amazing guy for selling it back to him
I spend every day for the last 3 weeks working on my new mk3 Shogun and when it rains, I come inside and watch videos on other people fixing them up haha! thanks a lot for your channel mate!

i too spend far too much time working on my shogun! i still love it though! (even if every other bolt is rusted in place and normally snaps off! :) ) enjoy your shogun mate they are beasts imo.
This pov camera work is so good it felt like I was the one fixing the butterfly valves lol
The Montero Messiah, great stuff man. I am the proud owner of an 02 limited. And she makes me pay small repairs bills, but god do I love driving her. Still get complements on how she looks.
We also caught one on a 95 SR, number 6 butterfly laying in the intake runner, "seconds from disaster," haha. Great job B!
You are one of the Realist! Great work! Edit: Ordered a shirt!
Compression testing alone isn’t enough. Should also do leak down test. Most likely there are leaking valves or piston rings. There are still missing bolts and valve debris somewhere. Maybe inside the exhaust at this point.
Dude, more content!!!! We love this Pajero content.
Bro you are freaking awesome!! Keep these fun videos coming!

Thanks!
I would have pulled the head or both heads. Thoroughly cleaned the intake and accounted for all pieces, even if by weight. This happened to me four years ago with only a single screw falling into the combustion chamber. What came out was a forged shim about 0.020" thick. It is still running super smooth today.
Thanks so much for making these videos!
You’re doing the lords work, love the channel

Oh man, what a great Channel. Just discovered it. I bought a brand new Montero in 1995, loved it, and I've had about four total now. Now I've got an 02 that I love to death that I call the beach buggy. I've been telling people how great these things are for years, so I'm really stoked to see someone who is even more stoked than me on them. I don't want it to sound like I'm cheating on my Montero, but I also have two Suzuki samurai's, an 86 Isuzu trooper, and a 2008 sequoia. Love them all. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Can you do a full video how to delete the full butterfly valve system. Please

Once you remove the plenum, unscrew all the screws holding the flaps onto the shaft, disconnect the linkage on the front of the shaft, pull the shaft out, remove the bushings between each cylinder's runner, TIG weld or plug the hole left by the shaft in the front where the plastic piece with the o-ring normally goes and put a vacuum cap over the unplugged port that the actuator runs off of. Pretty simple really.
👏👏.. you'remy idol
I'm looking for (3) parts for MK3 Montero/Pajero JMYLYV75W1J000127, (1) left side rear regulator motor, (2) right side front regulator , (3) brake booster any help would be appreciated
Quick question...I usually put my 03 Montero into 4HI once it starts snowing in Colorado and just leave it there until spring. Is it ok, or preferred to just leave in 4 Hi year round?

How can you prevent the motor from eating the butterfly valves? And around what millage it usually happens?
@montanamontero

i'm not sure about milage, i've seen all types. only way to prevent it is to check that they are tight, and fix the O ring
I thought plenty of folk delete on the butterfly flaps?
@JohnnyBfromPeoria

You can, but they're in there for a reason. Loss of low end torque would be the result.
Btw. Why didn’t you just delete the butterfly valve system for peace of mind. Just curious
@montanamontero

good question, i have heard, but never experienced myself, that it gives up quite a bit of low end torque, which to me is not worth it

Takes a licking, but keeps on ticking! 🙂 Not a fan of Asian V6s. Everything buried under manifolds! All mine ('90s Altima, Camry, Tacoma) are fours. My brother had a 1980 Colt wagon (Mitsubishi Galant in the rest of the world) with the 2.6 'silent-shaft' that made it to 280K, when the tranny died!
I have two Monteros free for you both run great but they need transmissions .. 2003 limited over 200k miles 2002 limited with 185k miles this one has lots of new parts If you are interested let me know

Why did you not do a butterfly valve and rod delete?
@JohnnyBfromPeoria

Because there's a reason they are in there.
"Why do you still install these butterfly flaps? My Montero doesn't have them at all. Is it possible that they improve fuel efficiency? Because mine is too high :("
@JohnnyBfromPeoria

They enhance low end torque by utilizing long runners in the intake. They get closed off at higher rpms and the short runners take over. In Gen 2s, only the 3.5l DOHC used a similar set-up (94-96). I "think" all the Gen 3s have them.

What problem could arise if they are not present, and if you had a similar issue, would you install swirl flaps?@@JohnnyBfromPeoria

Adds about 5% torque and power below 3.5k rpm

thank you man! And can you tell me about diff swap from 4.3 to 4.9 did you make this change ? How's that gonna affect the fuel consumption? Any direct observations? Because if i cant bring low this consumption i will sell the car :(@@chriskahn7123

@@murtagon4460 Swirl flaps? Not sure what that means. I HAVE had a similar issue, and I had new bushings made out of a bronze aluminum alloy (a leftover piece a guy had from a Space Shuttle project, no joke), the screws were then red loc-tited in place and a new o-ring went into the end bushing. Problem solved, full functionality retained.
I also have a 2003 4x4 that needs repairing
