    Stealth the reason that you were having issues with main battery range is that the wind pushes your ships causing them to till to port and starboard it helps to increase range on one side and decreases the other

    For the wind stuff, look up how to tack into the wind, it involves zig-zagging to achieve a higher speed. As for the range, these cannons can’t elevate the way turrets can, so when you turn your ship angles (think about an airplane turning) raising one side, so the high side shoots further but its minimum range increases, Vice versa for the low side.

    Potential speed is represented by the outer circle coloured segments. Dark green is the fastest. Red is slowest, or if you're dead into the wind, you might be being blown backwards.

    @@TomTom11112 Technically it is possible, albeit in a roundabout way. Sailing directly into the wind does not work, but there is a technique which OP was referring to, which is called "beating" where the ship zig-zags around 45 degrees left and right to the direction of the oncoming wind. This process is somewhat slow and laborious, but it is possible nonetheless.

    @@ranekeisenkralle8265 Yes, on smaller yachts and not with a square rig. Maybe it is possible with more maneuverable ships, but bigger ones barely move without square sails. At 37:58 you can see that game doesn't automatically fold square sails, and you don't have an option to use only other sails types.

  • @robh1801
    @robh18013 жыл бұрын

    Sailor here, couple of things about the wind which the game (sort-of) models. Your best point of sail is running before the wind which is in the green. As you noticed, going directly into wind is not possible (unless going backwards is desired). The best way to go upwind is to be on the final bit of green before it turns yellow (or 10 o'clock/2 o'clock if the wind is coming from 12 o'clock). This is close hauled and you'll get roughly 1/2 to 2/3 your max speed for the sea state. If you need to turn through the wind (tacking), stay close-hauled for a bit (see above) to build speed then go to a point in the green on the other side. Resist the urge to correct on the way round (dithering, as my instructor used to call it!). This was part of the manoeveuring problem. Try and stay upwind of the target (keep the 'wind-gauge'). This will allow you to dictate the range, especially against bigger ships. This will compromise the gun range on the target side (leeward), as the wind will make the ship heel. To avoid this, turn slightly into the wind and/or cut down some sail whenever you fire and this will increase the range of your broadside. Alternatively, use the wind to run down to a range where the range is close enough to fire/board. If you are downwind of a target, use chainshot to slow them down so you can close. Otherwise, or at short range, use round shot as this will penetrate the armour better. Grape shot I've found to be lacking if there is still any decent armour. Thanks for the great vid! :)

    Some good advice here. Just one minor addition: When beating you need not turn through the wind (with slow/damaged vessels in particular this may be a problem). You can also turn to the opposite side and make a 270-degree turn instead of 90 degrees. The effect is the same and you may even end up in a position from where you can rake the enemy.

    27:00 is the place where you crew how many of your sailors are to crew the captured vessel. There's usually a "minimal crew" default option, and sometimes a "scuttle" option if you just want to make sure the surrendered ship is out of the fight. Sometimes, once you've moved away, a surrendered ship will un-surrender and begin fighting again (it's timer-based).

  • @blackhat4968

    @blackhat4968

    2 жыл бұрын

    Are you sure its timer based? I'm pretty sure its distance based. As long as the enemy ship is "under your guns" they stay surrendered, but once your sail away from them they will raise the flag again and resume the fight. (One had a battle where I captured 3 ships sailed them with my landing fleet near the coast, and sent all my crews (including the ones on the captured ships) ashore for the battle. My 4 ships were anchored near the 3 anchored captured ships and they stay "surrendered" for the rest of the mission while I did the land battle.

    Stealth Age Of sail Player here! some tips. Carronades are short range cannons that are bigger but shorter so they could go into a 1v1 with a equivalent ship with normal cannons and win easily recommended you have a ship loaded with double ball and carronades for a extremely deadly combo (in one volley I destroyed a ship pretty easily) Get a troop ship you’ll probably need one for the later missions against the pirates fusiliers should be more than enough early game later get arty and supply and always walk your troops unless you need to charge or getting shot by arty Rush the reputation and the mission reward in your character upgrades screen reputation allows you to get upgrades ( at least for US, Royal Navy dosent need reputation) and allows you to keep your prizes you captured so you can sell them (otherwise you have to give them to the admiralty) Which gives you reputation but no money and the mission reward is self explanatory It seems to me you have already got most of the tech tree at the start therefore I highly recommend you don’t invest much in them (unless for carronades get those!) instead try to invest in more ships and better cannons

    If you are in contact with the developers, I have a couple of warnings as a Turkish naval historian. 1) Ship names are quite wrong for barbary vessels. Developers apparently used whatever Ottoman imperial navy ship name they found around. Barbary corsairs didnt use such names, except for a very few larger frigates and fourth rates occasionally gifted them by the Ottoman sultan as a reward of their participation to the imperial wars (in that period, usually Russo-Turkish wars). Those small xebecs didnt even carry names but were simply called with the name of their owners (eg. İshak Reis, Ömer Kaptan, Ahmet Hoca etc.) A bit larger square rigged ships at the size of sloops were named after their figureheads or taffrail decorations (eg. Servi Kıçlı "Cypress at stern", Yaldızlı Nar "gilded pomegrate", Kartal Başlı "eagle figurehead" etc). I can provide Barbary fleet rosters to the developers if necessary. 2) The regency of Tripolitania which was the main adversary at that point used large numbers of oared gunboats and galliots armed with mortars along with long guns, rather than pure sailing ships

    Awesome to see this game on the channel. Definitely a lot to learn and different ways of thinking than Dreadnaughts. A couple things I can think of here: Crossing the T isn't potent only because of being able to bring guns to bear, but also because of raking fire where shots can potentially travel down the length of the ship. Raking fire can cause much more damage than fire coming through the side as it is more likely to hit a bunch of things. You were right, your cannon range was reduced on one side because of the wind. The sails catch the wind and this causes the ship to heel, lowering the guns on one side and elevating them on the other. You did some manoeuvring to work around this, but you can also try reducing sail area. If the game does this right, it will lower the wind pressure so the ship heels less. It's possible sails are more vulnerable to damage at full sail too, but I'm not certain how the game models this. Turning across the wind (or tacking) isn't the end of the world and is a manoeuvre you will need to use at times, but you definitely want to try and avoid pointing the ship straight upwind and leaving it there (in irons). Unless of course, you really want to be going backwards haha.

    I still wish there was a game like this set in the 1850s-1870s. I know its a very short era, but I've always loved the steam/sail hybrid wooden ships. and frankly, even in the early 1870s a wooden steamer could hold her own against an ironclad, simply because the wooden ship could put more steel downrange oftentimes. something from that transitional era would be very intriguing indeed.

    Haha this was kind of painful to watch… The reason why your gun ranges decrease on the one side is because the ship is heeling over in the wind. Basically angling the guns into the sea. When a ship surrender, make sure to drop one of your officers off in their boat and have them capture the surrendered ship.

    training for this game is in "Naval Action" where you control a single ship ... but the learning curve is likely even steepper than in this game where you control a fleet . Firing range: as the wind push the ship on one side, the downwind gun can no longuer elevate enough and shoot a short distance ... and on the other side, receiving the wind, they elevate too much, sometimes, and you cannot shoot anything but the sail unless the sail of your ship are depowered to flatten the ship ...depowering the sail (slowing down) is key to shooting in Naval Action but this is specific to a single ship control and not to a fleet control.

  • @ShionWinkler
    @ShionWinkler2 жыл бұрын

    Wow, this game looks cool. I see a few mistakes, such as the USS Enterprise was a Schooner not a Sloop (Sloop-of-war just means a sloop with guns), Sloops were 1-2 mast ships, a Schooner was a 3-4 mast ship with distinct wedge shape sails and only a square sail on the top of the front 1-2 mast. As well as she only carried 12 six pounders and never nine pounders. She took extensive damage in the Barbary Wars but made it back to the US, where she was rebuilt as a Brig with 14 six pounders, and went back into service in the US navy in 1812. The Nautilus, was also a Schooner, with also only 12 guns on board.... And while the USS Essex was in fact a frigate, she was a Fifth-rate Frigate, not sixth and carried 40 thirty two pound short range carronade...... it's like the makers of the game failed to do any basic research on the ship types or loadouts.

    Haven’t played the game, but I think the issue with range on port vs starboard would have to do with the roll of your ship. If you’re turning at high speed, your gun decks will be pitched down towards the water towards the way you are turning, and you can only elevate your guns so much to compensate. Conversely the guns on the outside of the turn are elevated, increasing range.

    It's NOT CREW. IT's WIND. Look at the pennants on your ships, they tell you what direction the wind is blowing, and how strong. When your pennants point AWAY from the enemy, you have the wind advantage. The wind pushing in your sails tilts your ship in the same direction. That means the guns on the side the pennants are pointing to will tilt downward, and have less range. The opposite side will tilt upward, and have more.

Some (all?) of the crew of sunk ships appear in the ship's small boats and head for nearby friendly ships and replenish their manpower. So when you sunk one pirate with about 80 crew right next to another with about 100, most of the sunken ship's crew were easily able to transfer to the closest friendly vessel.

    The reason why one side or your ship's guns has less range is because of wind your sales are catching the wind and is pushing that side of the ship down into the water and then your guns cannot aim as high

    Feel free to do all the campaigns if you enjoy the game. Most of the videos of this game are from when it was in beta, even including them most people do the British campaign (because it says its for noobs) oddly enough iv only seen the US campaign done by one person and those videos are a few years old. The Barbery campaign is actually new since the games release so this should be FRESH far as the missions go.

    Oh I'm happy about that one game, but the learning curve is gonna be steep indeed ahah. Eager to see if it goes anywhere though. Edit: If you think the Essex guns are good now, just wait till you see what a carronade can do at 100 yards. Also, surrendered ships don't stay surrendering if you don't send crew on board (you can send some crew in rafts to board them by clicking on the small boat unit over your boat card).

    Wooden hull vs HE shell = Sailing ship go boom. I've read the Destroyermen series and a Wickes class destroyer instantly destroyed three east indiamen which are early versions of the frigate.

    if it explodes, nearby fish now have an ample supply of toothpicks. if the wooden hull fails to initiate the fuse, it now has an 18.1 inch hole straight through the deck, which does bad things to your ability to remain afloat. if the shell punches through the hull and detonates on contact with the water, the ship will probably be lifted out of the water and whats left sent several hundred feet in the air.

    Yamato sized? A hit from a 5 inch destroyer shell would blow a 1st rate ship clean out of the water. Just remember, even the largest sailing ships only had the displacement of a WW2 era destroyer - and none of that weight was armour.

    You should do a double barrel for the Flak gun on FtD as well as increase the blast radius for the flak shell. Removing two barrels offers more options. As for Age of Sails I would go for survivability and enhance crew capabilities.
