Some tips from someone who read a lot of books about the age of Sail. Never playey the game, but I know a lot about Naval Tactics in the Age of Sails. - In the beginning of the battle you turned in the wrong direction and gave up the windward position. Always try to keep the windward position, then you're always able to intercept an enemy. - Don't show your stern (backside) to the enemy. He will rake you from stern to bow and will kill more of your sailors. There is no armor in the Back ob the stern

I cringed so hard when he sailed downwind while trying to intercept a lateen rigged ship. Understandable as he wasn't familiar with tactics though.

Just to let you know: you can use all your ships on the main mission and after that let them do the secondary missions. Secondary missions are always started with the "next Stage" Button.

Always happy to help. Your first episode made me try this game and it gave me many hours of fun. So I'm just returning a favor.

When a ship is being pushed over by the wind it’s known as heeling, not listing. Generally, heeling slightly is a good sign that the boat is catching wind, but depending on the angle of sail and a few other things it can physically push the ship downwind. I’ve learned from racing sailboats and some tall ship experience.

These ships always have to aim a bit upwind of where they want to go (except for perfectly with the wind). They have no extended keel or side-boards to counteract the push of the wind.

Don't forget to look at the different types of cannons and weaponry for your crew, make sure you get atleast some bayonets for them

While I was sad to see the War on the Sea series end, this is pretty fun to watch too. Show the pirates what for

I mean he could have killed the musashi for a ultimate ending but WAR On The sea is pretty boring to be honest.

As far as equipment goes you have the ship itself, upgrades for it, the cannons, the crew and the weapons for the crew. The weapons you just bought are for Crew and Soldiers (the big musket looking thing under the crew section). All the upgrades in the tech menu useful though (upgrades you dont have, upgrades to existing ones, guns and cannons, troop types).

The industry tech is what you're looking for to upgrade your guns (to great effects once you have the advanced one really). You cannot even begin to imagine the effects a 68 pounder carronade have on a ship at close range. In any case, love the game and love your content in general, so I'm eager to see more of this!

just for giggles I stuck a bunch of those on HMS Victory's lower gun deck for a while: let's say the French ship of the line that I found didn't enjoy it! (I sure did though!)

Second best name for a ship is the SS Essess. (Boaty McBoatface will always be #1.)

there's something immensely satisfying about blasting the living crap out of a smaller ship with a larger one in this game. currently, I'm in the late stages of the British campaign...so HMS Victory, and about eight other Ships of the Line are in my fleet. let me tell you, the last mission saw a couple French sloops show up...they didn't like what Viccy did to them. Also: I cant be the only one who thought "oh crap, where's Constitution when you need her?!" when that giant pirate fleet showed up!

I'm really enjoying this series. Looking forward to seeing more of it!

Shame you didn’t capture the dragon, would have been another ship on your way to Pokémon it up.

gotta be carefu though: if you go too hard into that you can get into money trouble. I basically went full Nelson for a bit (at least Nelson at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent) and wound up losing something like 30k a turn.

Having those life bats trying to keep up with the Le Dragon was a nice sight to see

Great work managing the wind! You can really see how much of an advantage you can keep when you watch your pennants. When a ship strikes its colors and surrenders, you don't have to spend the time boarding - you can send a longboat from one of your nearby vessels, and they will take control of it without all the complex maneuvering. While it is more than the 'minimum crew' required, and can leave the sending ship a bit short-handed, it's very quick and easy to do. The Spanish weapons you gained access to are muskets, they're available for your boarding crews and such.

Yup. Knock a few sails off to slow it down while closing in, and then grapeshot the hell out of that ship... It would have been a matter of maybe 3-4 volleys of grape to get the crew low enough to make boarding easy

The game like pretty good, I think I'll be picking this one up.

As someone who played plenty of Port Royale back in the day, I can't help but notice your ...hesitation when it comes to using grape shot. You could easily have captured the two ships at the start AND the Dragon. Probably even more than that - if only you had used grape shot more. When you had both Essex and Enterprise at last grapeshot the hell out of the Dragon, you did it exactly right - only just way too late in that you had made a sieve of the ship beforehand. As for your idea of a troop ship, yes, that is indeed a good idea and something to do sooner, rather than later. And be it as a dedicated boarding craft in addition to the Essex. That way you can keep shooting with your warships and have the boarding vessels take the prizes. Keep in mind, back in the day boarding and capturing ships tended to be more frequent than outright sinking them - and not only because of the prize money.

Historical Xebec's was so fast that France and Spain build a bunch for pirate hunting!

Signal boost to this as this is important information!

Another tip is that you can capture ships that have surrendered with the landing party boats.

There’s an upgrade that lowers the weight of your cannons. You’re gonna need it as you get better weapons. Otherwise your ship will be overweight.

"Can the John Paul Jones stop the abusing of American pride with such limited resources?", I think so and probably just using the 5" gun and the 25mm Bushmasters, let alone all the missiles. A bit soon for it to be showing up, though. Those pirates encountering Essex and Enterprise should be glad it is 1801 and not 1945.

Loved the video Stealth17 Gaming! I saw that Advanced Gun Carriages seem to reduce weight. By that I think they mean the weight of the guns, and thereby allowing you to put either more equipment or crew or anything else the game might have to offer. I'd hold off on the Troopships for the time being as we're not seemingly at the point of Landing troops "From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli" as the United States Marine Corps Hymn always starts out.

The troopship would not only be useful as landing craft. It would also be a convenient way to capture ships while his warships keep grapeshotting the next. as such i would recommend getting one ASAP for that purpose. And bei it only for shooting his reputation through the roof by selling off all the smaller prize ships. Doing so would in turn allow him to dash through the research tree quite a bit.

When You have the speed advantage as in the beginning of the video the only option is to constantly be in front of the vessel You are shooting at and cross its T all. the. time. hope that helps :)

I think that’s a measure of old English rule in grammar to refer to someone of notoriety by ‘the’. As in, none-other, big hoss, someone you ought to know by reading this. OR it’s a goofy error. But bless JPJ.

Spinning in wind direction is more Fast than in not favor if the wind

Surrendered ships will be captured at the end of a battle, unless an enemy boat of men grabs her again, but if theres no threat of that dont waste men capturing it

When I played Empire Total War I would alternate what side of my ship faced the enemy to reduce damage so that one side isnt completely destroyed . Does the same thing work in this game?

It does but ships in Empire turn so unrealistically fast compared to UA:AoS that it's not as viable a tactic with bigger line ships in this game.

1st rate are the best ships in this game had one with 122 guns a french ship i captured as the british

That is fine because they never struck their colours on the sinking ship, so they are just retreating momentarily, and it is expected that routing formations be harried until they surrender

From the edge of your range, your shots have a great chance to bounce, which is not great. Go closer to penetrate them, than fill them up with seamen.

Dame Stealth, your already over budget, guess congress didn't give much to work with, probably mostly your crew numbers i suspect, but ya this game gives you a "budget" every ship and mainly your crew eat into that budget, so your losing money at the moment, of course you get cash and rep from each mission, but i think if you hit next stage you will loss a bit of your funds. you can do the main missions with your full fleet then send them off to do the side missions. I did google the wiki a few days ago, you go all the way up to first rates and all the way down to unrated cutters and merchant ships (troops transports basically for the merchants), thing is each ship has its own sailing characteristics, so while Ships of the line pack a lot of punch, they are crap at sailing, where as a brig, snow or sloop can sail at better angles of wind but obvious lack the fire power. You cant shoot the row boats far as i know, or at least your cannons have a hard time shooting them. Edit: i stand corrected the arrow is green at the end. Guess Congress gave you more money. WTF IT WAS GREEN A MOMENT AGO!

all of the six original us navy frigate is in this game you know the uss constitution her self is in this game

I wonder if grape shot does more once you've ruined the armor on that side of the ship.

It does work. Always helpful when you try to capture a SOL with frigates. Reduce the armor and then grape until they surrender or the crew is decimated enougth to board it.

@@alexheese I've found that handy myself: of course I never give the SOL a fair fight too: my first SOL was actually ex-french, that I swarmed with like four frigates and just got right hull-to-hull with. tbh I'm not sure how they were loading the guns we were so close!

One tactic you could try is to get behind the ships and shoot at their vulnerable rear planking and poor armor back there. This was an actual naval tactic called raking fire and because the cannons aren't penetrating the side of a ship and the cannonballs are more or less flying down a wooden pipe and have the ability to do horrific damage. Don't know if this is modelled in the game but I would be disappointed if it wasn't.

He did get raked in this video, so I suppose it is modelled. Fortunately for him the ship doing that seems to have used solid shot instead of grape though.

I think it is, because you can see that damage/casualty values coming up in droves every time a ship takes raking fire to the stern

You really need to work on pattern recognition, you just bought spanish land weapons

this game needs a copy editor to help them with all the grammar mistakes---I know it's a small thing, but seeing so many mistakes in text just makes me feel like a game isn't well put together

This is only available on Steam? I dislike Steam.
