There are people putting videos on KZread using $5k drones that are as good as professional helicopter footage from ten years ago. And they can fly them for miles. The stability is what impresses me. It's better than the old crane cameras that used to do golf on TV.

Germany hit nearly 16 years a conservative government. We voted now a green , social and liberal government back in September 21. One of theier votes was: no weapons into conflict zones and a tax/prize discharge. Now the opposite is happening and the politics lose theier face. Sometimes I feel bad rooting for destruction of those tanks. I mean every explosion means 4 or 5 lives lost ... Then I come to my senses and remember the Russians chose this. They have no business being in another country ... Surrender or desertion is an honorable path here. Fighting for the Russian army is disgraceful.

Well this is by-the-book dug-out executed nearly perfectly. The problem is that "the book" was written in the 60-ies when there were no drones no precise artillery available. Back than such position was really hard to assult because you need a direct hit in order to damage tank in such dug out.

The book was probably written in the desert by Rommel, should have deturfed first, dug your trench and replaced the turf, fairly basic fieldcraft if you ask me.

Well, from what we know is happening on occupied territories and from the intercepted calls to the families, at least a portion of those soldiers love being there, love killing, looting and raping, so I would say good riddance to those. I am sure there are many who don't but as I spoke to my Russian friends, they told me soldiers have many options to avoid going to war, they choose to, cause that means they can improve their extremely poor economic status.

No, you can't order troops into battle if they are just going to put a hole in your head for the effort, well, frag you, ie, toss an untraceable grenade into you tent, office, vehicle, etc. Though Russian troops have been known to just say forget the consequences and simply run their commanders over with tanks. There is an endless supply of stay safe in the rear buttt kissers, in army and out, ready to be made 'commanders. There is a limited supply of dirt poor oppressed desperate enough for a years salary in a month, to risk serving in units w 30% and higher killed / wounded rates, and there are units where it's even worse.

With personal camouflage, the aim is to conceal yourself. The aim of camouflaging AFVs, artillery, command posts etc in open ground is not ro hide where it is (impossible) but what it is. In that respect they've done a good job; those are professionally prepared positions.

Even without computer control, they have all sorts of electronic aids to help with targeting. Nothing like even a few decades ago.

...'drone flies over battlefield and sees 1914' is more like it. Construction of such elaborate trench-works is a good indication Russia is planning to be in this for the long haul.

That trench line? It's suicidally bad. A straight trench like that is begging for artillery to sweep the trench. Likewise, in the era of 3- and 4-meter CEP heavy artillery, some plywood and a bit of dirt overhead will NOT save you or your vehicle. The M-777 howitzer CEP is even less than that, even without the special fire control computers. Whoever designed the fortification was criminally negligent. He killed those troops as surely as if he'd blown them up himself.

I suspect they are using whatever they can scrounge. If they are short of fuel and ammo, they certainly don’t have concrete and rebar.

@@lowandslow3939 the Japanese in WWII demonstrated effective use of lumber and dirt. It's not a difficult concept; you just need to be willing to work at it. But then, the lazy SOBs that dug a *straight* trench line clearly couldn't be bothered. Edit: to be clear: fell trees, or tear apart buildings to obtain the necessary lumber. They're already wrecking Ukraine on a systematic level - driving an AFV through a barn to 'liberate' some timber is well within their wheelhouse.

@@lairdcummings9092 I agree with straight trenches being stupid. I thought that was agreed by all as early as WW1. As far as anything short of a hardened bunker, it will not protect against large artillery. It’s not cover, just concealment.

@@lowandslow3939 look up the design of Japanese defensive bunkers on the Pacific Islands during WWII. They literally stood up to naval gunfire. Using only sand and tree trunks. Hell, look up WWI trench warfare "bomb proofs." Timber and earth. What the Russians needed is achievable; they just need to put their backs into it.

@@lairdcummings9092 I know the Japanese dug in VERY, VERY deep and that is why they survived. I also think that today’s artillery shells are more potent than those used in WW2. Not more powerful than naval guns by any means. You can’t convince me that some plywood and dirt will provide enough protection. Not even using felled trees. I wouldn’t risk my life under that, would you?
