In September Ukraine was a week or 2 from no longer using soviet tech for lack of ammo. Now after the russian donations they can continue for months while the western gear replaces it. Thanks russia, for your totally planned and well executed regrouping. Leaving behind over 20 tons of ammo was a great way to slow down the advance for a few days.... And double Ukrainian fire power for the next few months... Very generous too...

The T64 may be old but it is an extremely good tank. So good that the later t72 was designed to match its performance (not best it) but cost much less to build. Also the T80 is essentially a T64 with a jet turbine engine instead of a diesel.

@@carval51 It is quite simple, it is because russia does not have as many modern AT systems as Ukraine thanks to Western weapon deliveries. The tanks are still the same, old, mostly poorly maintained but the difference is in their deployment: Ukrainians use them as mostly support vehicles and indirect fire support, russia basically uses them in an URA charge. Second and even more important thing is the lack of portable AT systems on the russian side compared to their Ukrainian counterparts armed with modern western AT systems.

@@carval51 I feel that may be the case because Russia is seen as the "2nd Army". For Russia to be deploying T-64 over its T-80 or T-90 stocks is something of an issue. We would all think the same if the US started deploying old stock M60s after a few months of fighting with M1s. I am aware that there are modernised M60s in the National Guard and USMC. Still, the US isn't going to use them as a frontline MBT unless in a dire situation.

@@vangestelwijnen The T-62 and T-64 are contemporaries that entered production just a couple of years apart. That said the T-64 was more advanced and meant to serve in tank regiments while the T-62 replaced the T-55 in motor rifle units.

I remember listening to radio free Europe as a kid in communist Hungary, where it was illegal. It was a voice of truth amid the flood of lies our gov't propagated. Today, I gotta say, you bring the most gritty, true reporting straight from the front I see in this war. Pretty much without any commentary. You guys oughtta be proud of what you do.

The more I read about Ukraine's modernized T-64's the more I'm convinced that they're actually superior to Russia's fleet of T-72 based tanks. That being said Ukraine still needs more armor so hopefully Cyprus can unload its 82 T-80U's.

The T-64s are inherently worst than the Russian's T-72s. Essentially they are upgraded older tanks. However the Ukrainian training, support, and logistics is much more superior than the Russians. Thats why they are winning. If the Ukrainians can get their hands on Russian T-90s or Polish PT-91s, or other upgraded T-72s, they are more than happy to swap their aging T-64s

@@darnit1944 I wouldn't say they're inherently "worst" despite what Red Effect might have said in a video from 5 years ago or whatever. The T-72 was 40% of the cost of the T-64 and was exported but the Soviets kept the T-64s for themselves.

No one can doubt Ukrainian courage.

It’s frankly amazing that Ukraine was able to produce so many well trained soldiers in the little time they did. Not even a year ago most of the folks fighting were civilians. Their ability to run on so many weapons systems is impressive. They are also able to refresh troops with extensively trained soldiers. Not to mention Nobody knows how many Ukrainians are training out of country in places like the US, UK, Germany and other NATO countries. Unlike Russia the Ukrainians are sending well trained well equipped reinforcements, whereas Russia just throws warm bodies on the front lines.

The British special forces were in the Ukraine since the first annexation in 2014. The British not only trained thousands of Ukraine infantry soldiers but Ukraines special forces too both here and in the Ukraine. The equipment we provided has also been brilliant.

I think the Ukranian Gunners and Artillery men, the infantry, the Mechanised Units and just the whole UAF across the board have shown how good they are because they have trained to use the equipment from various countries plus the really old Soviet stuff and they are absolutely cracking on with it all. And the Drone ops have revolutionised the way wars will be fought in future due to their creativity and skill. Nothing but respect to the lion hearts of Ukraine.

Under a set of conditions tanks become artillery and since they are very mobile they can come together quickly and dispurse quickly. During the Korean War american tanks would drive up a berm to super elevate their guns and fire much farther than normal.

Former Field Artilleryman here. Seen many Abrams on maneuvers and live firing. I was greatly impressed with them. But as you say in certain conditions tanks can become artillery, the reverse is also true (it's called direct fire). So I'm proud to say Armor is the Field Artillery's little brother. Where you have Abrams tanks, look 10 miles behind them. Big brother is there to annihilate anyone messing with little brother 💥

Have you heard the expression: don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes (credited to the provincial commander at the Battle of Bunker Hill) 😅😂🤣 Being on higher elevation in the case you're referring to isn't "high elevation" but rather the physical elevation changes the distance during the angle of descent 🛫🛬

If the stubborn Ukrainians simply accept the fact that they need to train and adopt NATO standard tanks, they could have an abundance of M1A1 Abrams from the US storage. There will be no shortage of tanks and ammunitions.

Interesting video of a Russian made T-64 model. I was able to get familiarization training on a T-62 tank while I was in the US Army. That tank was a very simple export model made in Russia. No auto loader mechanism. Just an open space. All cannon shells were just mounted to the inside of the tank by leather straps. No hydraulic motors to move the turret left or right. Even the elevation of the cannon was by manual crank wheels. To traverse the turret 180° degrees took forever. The optical sight had only five stadia lines to range the target. No night vision or thermal vision. The diesel exhaust was constantly blowing black smoke. You could see that T-62 from a mile away. A mile is just 1,600 meters. The old M-60a3 tank and the current M1 Abrams tank can easily shoot that distance. Now that I see the T-64 for a comparison. That basic T-62 was really junk. The US Army got it from Grenada. America went to Grenada to replace the Democratically elected President that was disposed after a Cuban led coup in Grenada. There was so msny worn out weapons it was rediculous. AK-47's had the rifling inside the barrel completely gone. Those AK's were stamped as Bulgarian made. Worn out parts were all over that rifle. Even the Trunnion pins and the bolt lugs were worn down.

T64 is a decent tank - more capable than the T72/90 series - but it IS very old. We should be sending Ukraine all the Leo Is we can find, as they're second-line for most of NATO now, yet worlds better than the craptastic shit the orks have. The fact T64 can fire captured Russian ammo is a bonus, though.

The fact they can use captured Russian ammo is a benefit, for now. If we send them Leo II / Abrams we also need to send not only 120mm smoothbore ammo, but MG ammo, spares, and so on. Frankly Poland should give Ukraine their PT91s as the Ukrainians would be very familiar with them already, and all of the EU should standardize on Leo II - Including Ukraine when they join. For now, get them the PT91.

That is a problem. Ukraine keeps refusing to adopt NATO standard tanks. If they accept, the US would be able to send their many many M1A1s in deep storage. This saves the Americans some maintenance money and the Ukrainians get plenty of tanks and ammo. Win-win situation.

I wonder whether the autoloader doesn't work, or if they're keeping the ammo outside and loading it one round at a time to avoid playing the turret toss game if they take a hit. (The location of the ammo storage for the autoloader is the reason Soviet/Russian tanks tend to launch their turrets when they are hit.)

i wondered that too, I think its becuase they are using that tank as essentially an SPG, so they probably already went through the on board stored ammo, and instead of filling up the internal magazine, just load them through the turret. easier.

Interesting to see how they fill up the autoloader.
