Old NATO Howitzers Are A New Weapon For Ukrainian Artillerists

The FH70 155-millimeter howitzer has been used by NATO countries for over 40 years. The letters and number actually stand for Field Howitzer for the 1970s. Ukrainian forces first got their hands on them courtesy of Italy in May and received training in Estonia.

My fathers US Army guns in WW2 were the M2 155 long Tom. These were still in service during Vietnam. Despite an elevation of up to 65 degrees they were not classed as howitzers. Their ancestor was the French GPF 155 of WW1. In N.Africa they were attached to the British and Free French forces at different times. They were extremely accurate out to almost 15 miles. In one incident at 12 miles a German ammo train was struck and set on fire by the first ranging shot. They were a towed piece and looked similar to these but had 4 wheels. It had a 12 man crew and its rate of fire was faster than the modern mechanized guns. At a unit reunion at Ft. Bragg they were given a tour and the current artillery commander was amazed at the rate of fire they achieved. They had a lot of practice from N.Africa to Germany.Their drone was a Piper Cub spotter plane. Shoot and Scoot still works.

It was already a bit outdated in 1997/98 when I served in the Italian Army and, except drones, other kinds of artillery were already in camp and GPS was in use. But even if it was built in 1970 and its projects started in the last years of 60s, it was dotated of a lot of features that can be useful also today like the APU, the ability to fire in the two arcs (less than 45° and more than 45°, so it could fire like a tank cannon or a mortar) and the capacity to fire normal grenades and semi-auto propelled grenades that extends the maximum range from 24 to 32 kms.

The observing units , dependent on the target, probably will ask for one single shell (all weather/wind - distance, altitudes are taken into it by the fire control command) - after thagt single shell hit, they may ask for slight corrections - and the next full round (mostly at least 2 to 4 guns) will deploy the present around a certain variance, which may between 5 to 30m, depending on distance (and accuracy of the gunners ) . Good teams will almost hit at the first shelling… and sometimes the more area the better, depending on the type of shell used… (different fuzes …) 🧨

What you're saying basically is this: Russia is a country of idiots led by morons if it started the war with fewer troops than its enemy. But that's nothing new. In World War II, the US had losses of about 300,000. The UK had losses of about 300,000. The USSR had losses of about 20,000,000. That's because they were always only good at two things: retreating & waiting for winter to set in, and throwing so many soldiers into the meat grinder as to overwhelm the enemy. Even at the very last stages of WW2, the USSR was still suffering enormous losses to Nazi boys and old men from the Volkssturm.

@@Fighter4Street thats a common lie that is being paraded around the russian propaganda space and is FALSE. I think youre the one trying to mislead people Ukraine had the same amount of troops as russia when they started and now ukraine has NOWHERE near 4-x5 times the troops that is utter lunacy, youre gonna try and tell people ukraine? Meanwhile russia has lost over 100,000 casualties and mobilized at least 220,000 just conscripts, not to mention 10's of thousands more each from LPR and DPR, kadyrovites and most of its other conventional units from all around russia and as well as abroad, from everything from force conscripting random LPR/DPR men out on the street walking to the store, to its own citizens from every corner of russostan, to recalling units from caucasus, kazakhstan and syria,

@@Fighter4Street and no they havent "just actually started trying now and take the gloves off" they always have been all in doing everything they could have to beat ukraine and have FAILED, so that claim is bullsht they just knew if they started terror bombing kyiv and blowing up civilians and civ infrastructure with cruise missiles as much as they could (which is already draining their stocks even lower than they already have been since april) would be a bad idea as it would drastically increase the wests support to ukraine and russia would be even more screwed, as you can see now it has and ukraine is getting even more aid and help now, as you can see the amounts just being committed now in the last week and thats only tip of the iceberg. Only now after ukraine humiliated putin by blowing up his shtty bridge and handing them massive L's for 6 months straight from kherson to kharkiv putin has no choice to do something, anything to not look weak and impotent, even he knows its a bad idea so he hasnt done it before now, but now that he has and the "gloves are off" and mobilization has happened, now I want to see his and people like you's shtty lame excuses now for when ukraine continues to kick russias ass and they continue to fail like the have constantly, all over ukraine in every corner, whats gonna be the excuse then?

Glad to see Ukraine embrace Western military strategy. Soviet/Russian strategy has been to focus on mass formations, mass bombing and the like. Western strategy is about efficiency and precision. You can see that perfectly here; the Ukrainians focus on fast, mobile, accurate artillery fire. While the Russians have a slower but much more substantial response - they'd likely bomb the whole area piece by piece. It's important for everyone's security in our alliance, from UK to USA to Poland, that our fundamental strategies work.
