In Australia in the 70's we had ballotted conscription for 2 years ( Possibly ending up in Vietnam). Many boys opted to sign up for the CMF(Reserve) for 3 years, rather than take the chance of being conscripted for 2 years with the possiility of being sent to war.

Francis. On the subject of seizing foreign investments made by Russia, I seem to recall that Russia did something similar to our assets after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. Russian industrialisation had been achieved prior to WW1 by huge loans from France and Britain in particular, and the Bolsheviks never paid any of it back.

A disjointed podcast where Dom stated in a 'tactical deep dive' that Russian forces 'not capable to amass more then 100 men' due to 'manpower isses' but 5 minutes later quoting Ukrainian sources saying this exact sizing limit in the RF is due to having to avoid heavy enemy ISR. Which is it? He also said RF are facing morale issues "since being pushed back by Ukraine" but when was that last true? And what Francis omitted was that if 230B of Russian frozen funds are spent, Russia will smash away at Ukraine even more to keep increasing the cost to the West.

Good points - but the west won't use the 230B as it frankly wouldn't dare. I doubt it would even use the interest earned, but Russia can ''smash'' all it likes, it cannot sustain this war economically. It's running out of tanks, APV''s and they are being destroyed at a far higher rate than they can replace. Let's be very clear, Putin has made a huge mistake by invading its neighbour.

Svetlana certainly delivered some bad news. The level of honesty is admirable. The conscription bill probably passed too late to get new conscripts trained and to the front before the Russian summer offensive. Ukraine has too few soldiers to defend everywhere. The soldiers at the front have largely been there since at least early 2022 with no hope of rotating out. Morale is at a low ebb. Ukraine is low on artillery shells as well. I'm 100% in support of Ukraine. The stoppage of military aid from my country, the USA makes me furious at the MAGAs causing it and sad for what it might cost Ukraine. I'm not going to predict anything too bad. Russia has been incompetent militarily so hopefully, even if they break through in places this summer, they won't be able to exploit the breakthrough as well as a more competent force might. Ukraine has interior lines and will probably have to form a mobile rapid response force on a divisional scale to move to blunt breakthroughs. That kind of thing might even allow for a Russian breakthrough to be cutoff and wiped out. Also, hopefully Ukraine will have enough artillery shells by then to punish Russian assaults. It is probably going to be a difficult summer that will be studied by militaries around the world for generations to come. I still believe Ukraine will win this war, even if it is unlikely that summer 2024 will go well. Maybe Ukraine can inflict grievous losses on the Russians, or maybe drones will limit the Russians ability to attack even with a numbers advantage. If I was a younger man and wasn't my elderly mother's main care taker, I'd like to think I'd be in Ukraine now, doing what little I could to help.

MiG-31I fighter jets have been upgraded and received an air refueling system to increase the combat radius, a defense industry source told TASS. "MiG-31I fighters of the Russian long-range aviation received a possibility to refuel in the air and increased the combat engagement distance," the source said. Another source said MiG-31I differs from previous MiG-K option by "different engines, avionics and missiles." TASS has no official confirmation of the report. The Izvestia daily earlier said MiG-31I will be able to refuel in the air. The fighter has electronic systems that increase the flight characteristics and capabilities. The jet is equipped with an electronic remote control system and onboard computers that automatically bring the jet into the required trajectory and fire a hypersonic missile at the calculated time.

Yeah, we’re noticing the contradictions. Dom desperately clings to the claim of human wave attacks with more and more convoluted rationalizations. He apparently believes the change in tactics has nothing to do with lessons learned, but an inability to raise enough men to carry out their preferred ‘have a full division rise up out of the trench and run forward’. Morale may indeed be low, but so is that of the Ukrainians, as is related by the guest. No Ukrainian wants to go to the Ostfront to face an enemy that just comes on and on and on, aided by a hail of artillery and FABs. The pod today was a combo of winging it and shaming by the regulars, followed by a sharply contrasting sobriety from the guest.

Accept this fact: Ukraine has mobilized over 1.5 million soldiers. Fallen soldiers exceed 400,000. Soldiers who have lost combat capability but not died 150,000. Soldiers captured by Russia 50,000. Russia has mobilized a total of 850,000 soldiers. 550,000 are engaged in combat on Ukrainian territory. 180,000 are stationed within Russia's borders. Fallen soldiers 60,000. Soldiers who have lost combat capability total 20,000. Those captured by Ukraine amount to 5,000. = Only this scenario makes sense and is consistent with the reality currently being discovered: 1Ukraine faces significant difficulties in conscription. 2Ukrainian frontlines are continually retreating, and the retreat is accelerating. = According to Ukrainian reports, Russia has suffered 450,000 casualties, while Zelensky claims Ukraine has lost 30,000 soldiers. If the situation is indeed as Ukraine and Zelensky describe, then Russia should have already withdrawn completely from Ukrainian territory. Simultaneously, it should have lost control of the Belgorod Oblast.

Ukrainian News: 16 April 2024, Tuesday, 13:22 Russia was able to quickly restore oil refining capacity after Ukrainian attacks - Reuters The aggressor country of russia was able to quickly repair some of the key oil refineries that were hit by Ukrainian drone attacks. This was reported by the Reuters agency on Monday, April 15. Russia is rapidly repairing its refineries, despite difficulties in obtaining advanced Western technologies. The agency writes that the Ryazan plant of Rosneft, the Kuibyshev and Syzran refineries returned to work the installations that were under repair. "According to Reuters estimates, russia's total primary oil refining capacity hit by drones fell to 90,500 metric tons per day from about 123,800 metric tons per day earlier. However, Russia's total primary oil refining capacity overall is down due to various outages and repairs, is expected at the level of 4.4 million tons in April against 4.1 million tons in March," the material says.

@@sebastianforbes1 Russia demographically never truly recovered after ww2 (And ww1+Civil War combination). And as time went by this problem only increased. Majority of putin's government was trying to address this problem from family politics to even fully open door immigration policy for central Asia. This is not just a matter of "Recruitable Manpower" for russian army, this is a matter of catastrophic demographic crisis that will hit Russia like a 100km/h (60miles/h) Truck. One of the reason's why Putin wanted to quickly annex Ukraine was to quick-fix russian demographics by adding 40mln people to it. Yet as of right now this blew up the other direction with millions of russians emigrating, dying or being permamently disabled. Of course Ukraine suffers from exactly the same problems. And most likely Ukraine after this war will be a completely broken state. But important difference is that Ukraine fight's for it's own survival which makes any measures and any cost in their eyes worth taking. And idea behind imperialism is to get something at the expanse of others not destroy both yourself and your target.

@@sebastianforbes1 Russian mentality is exactly like that of ww1 states, when they cared more about winning that about any reasonable goals behind it. In the end it literally broke everyone involved. French were completely de-moralized to fight any new war, British were unable to recreate their army, Russia literally Collapsed into civil war. Yes, Russia can win this war, by taking both Ukraine and itself down with it, but by the end what goal is exactly achieved? Annexing a state that population will be completely hostile towards Russian government with infrastructure so destroyed that it does not bring any value and will need to repaired from Russian taxes? While simultaneously destroying your own economy and demographics in the process? Don't even ask about de-mining costs. All this is achieved while Nato which was on a verge of slowly Disolving itself found itself a new purpose of opposing and containing aggressive Russia.

This would not have happened if Ukraine accepted the reality that it was more relevant to Russia than it was to the US, in a same way the Afghanistan was more relevant to Taliban than to American voters. Ukraine was brave. Finland was smart. Ukraine’s politicians don’t have much choice now. To accept a peace treaty on Russian terms is to admit that they are accepting a deal that is worse than what they could have gotten before the war or at it’s beginning, having wasted thousands of Ukrainian lives. God help Ukraine
