Ukraine election: Poroshenko concedes as exit polls show landslide victory for Zelenskiy

Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a comedian whose only political experience consisted of playing a president on TV, has won a landslide victory in Ukraine's real-life presidential election.
Subscribe to Guardian News on KZread ► bit.ly/guardianwiressub
Exit poll results released after voting stations closed showed sitcom star Volodymyr Zelenskiy receiving an extraordinary 73.2% to president Petro Poroshenko's 25.3%. Even before the release of any official returns in the two-man runoff, Poroshenko accepted defeat, but told his supporters that although he may be leaving the presidential office, he would not retire from politics.

That’s the thing I’ve seen loads of interviews with him (translated in English) and there isn’t a single one where what he’s said hasn’t been believable. He’s been asked if he ordered the bombing on Russian land few days back and he refused to answer rather than lie. He did kind of hint that he did but everything he said was true. He’s been asked how he is and even when he Says he’s ok he does seem ok I know he’s likely hiding a lot but he can act how he says he is. Last week he did an interview with Russian journalists and you could tell he was really tired and mid question he says he hadn’t slept well. So yea he is definitely honest even tho he probably does hide some of how he’s feeling.

@@andrewthomas695 Blaming those with no money and no power for the failings of any nations establishment. Is like blaming the ocean for sinking a badly maintained ship instead of its captain. Sure the people cast the votes. but their alternative is... What exactly ? Some times you need to introduce a spanner into the machine to break it badly enough that real substantive change can occur, how else do you wake people up and get them to actually look long and hard at those they choose to represent them ? Politic's as usual is done for the foreseeable future across the globe. To many years of career politicians saying one thing and then doing something more convenient to there own and there paymasters interests usually at the expense of those that voted them into office in the first place. Right now Ukraine has a Chance for actual substantive change, It has a leader un-ensnared by decades of back room politicking a complete outsider. Who so far is un-corrupted by a system that by its very nature tarnishes those who work their up from the trenches and are expected to remember those that helped them when they reach the real levers of power. Democratic nations can no longer accept this tired old pantomime of continually selecting from the "lesser of two evils" Volodymyr Zelenskiy is just the latest manifestation of a slumbering global populous waking up to the fact that Business as usual is not working. Personally I applaud those who voted this man into office as it speaks long and loudly that the people of Ukraine are done with the status quo.

GREAT! The comedian won. Now what? We elected a game show host with a horrible record in the real estate business who is also a perpetual liar and look at the mess we're in. At least the people of Ukraine may share a few laughs while this guy's in office.
