Ukraine Captured a Russian Turtle Tank 🐢

Ойын-сауық

In mid-June Ukrainian troops captured a prime example of Russia's Turtle Tanks. In this video we take a look at how it came to be captured and look at how the counter-FPV shell was built and that tank's features.

That's putting it lightly. Russia and Ukraine kept on trading with each other for at least the first half of 2022 as the war was raging on, people from both countries play video games online together, and sometimes even visit each other's country without much trouble. No filtration until very recently (and only in airports), no discrimination, no internment camps. In Chernobyl, Russian and Ukrainian forces called for a temporary ceasefire and guarded and controlled the nuclear plant together. There are plenty of videos from there of soldiers from both sides chilling out together, jocking and laughing.

In the most recent video they show the damage done to the track by a drone attack. This burned off the rubber on one of the road wheels, which got tangled up. It was this mobility kill that allowed for the tank and its crew to be captured. Few of the 'turtle tanks' protect against such mobility kills, so their use remains highly questionable.

The turtle tank is basically a "tank character" in games. To see outside they have cameras installed. They aren't supposed to be the ones shooting back, they are there to 1. Test the future offensive 2. Go over mines 3. Tank FPV drones If it gets stuck (it has before), they abandon it.

"How can they see outside?" Periscope. You know: the little things, all (or most) tanks have them. "How can they response to attacks from the side if they can't use their machine guns?" As a regular tank from around the time they dropped all except one turret (WWII) - very badly. "How can they recovered their turtle tank if they get stuck in a hole?" No how, they had to disembark and get lost in a horror, presumably towards their positions. But something didn't go according to plan. Maybe they got a shellshock, maybe they decided to play heroes before a rifle barrel was shoved in their faces, maybe something else, we'll never know.

Russia doesn't have any roadworthy T-34s left in their own stock, hence they imported them for the parades. The oldest shite they have that has a chance of working is the T-55, and yeah, they're onto that now.

From other videos of it, it's a T-62M1, with some freshly installed empty reactive armor blocks on the forward hull (the screws securing them are nice and shiny). The box for the laser rangefinder above the barrel is still present, as is the add on composite armor on the turret cheeks. It's lost it's side skirts at some point.

None of the "Turtle Tanks" have operational guns. The RA is basically using Tanks with broken autoloaders and worn out barrels as armored trucks because the UA has been destroying supply trucks as they get near the front. Once you remove all the ammo, there is quite a bit of storage space in the turret , the Internal fuel tanks can hold 250 gallons and you can use the deck behind the turret like a truck bed. That's why the "shell" is so big , it's so they can pile stuff up behind the turret. So they load the thing up with just a driver in it, then drive to the front unload everything ,including most of the fuel and then they drive back. This is a bad sign for the RA , it means they have more tanks that are no longer capable of combat because of non-functional guns than they can repair.

Honestly, imagine what must have been going through the minds of that M113 crew. There's this huge thing chasing you, even as you try to hide from it it's still perusing, you KNOW it's the enemy, it's a tank and you're merely in an APC, if it catches you, you're toast, here it finally catches up to you, you've made your peace ready to accept your fate... Only for the crew of that thing get out, confuse you for friendlies and ask for directions. To quote that Ukrainian soldier from the very start of the full-scale invasion - "We're very lucky that they're so fucking stupid."
