Ukraine: Back in the war - The homecoming of photographer Yuri Kosin | DW Documentary

Photographer Yuri Kosin experienced the outbreak of war in his hometown of Irpin, near Kyiv. At first he fled, like many others, but soon decided to turn back to document the destruction and human suffering.
At the end of April, Yuri Kosin set off back home from Poland. He didn’t know what to expect in Irpin but knew it wouldn’t be the same. The region around Kyiv had been declared safe again - Russian troops had withdrawn from northern Ukraine, leaving horrific scenes behind. Just by Irpin is Bucha, where evidence of suspected war crimes has been found. Friends, neighbors and other artists tell Yuri Kosin what they’ve experienced. With his camera, the photographer documents the horrors of war in his home country. His pictures are a testimony to the brutal destruction, the interminable suffering, and people’s endeavors to live some kind of life within a nightmare.
Photography of this nature is also open to interpretation. Images of war events, in particular war crimes, have directly impacted political action. The pictures form a basis for war strategies. Yuri Kosin considers both the opportunities and the risks posed by the power of images and discusses it with other artists. Filmmaker Andrzej Klamt accompanies photographer Yuri Kosin on his difficult homecoming back to Ukraine.

Something important to know, for all who are interested in history and/or support Ukraine: Rus’ ought not to be confused with “Russia”, which derives its name from the Rus’ but historically is a completely different state, which almost all its existence was at war with the Rus’. Just like the Holy Roman Empire was actually Germany, Russia is actually Muscovy, despite their best attempts to convince everybody otherwise. Its name “Russia" received only in 1721, when Peter I passed a decree to change Tsardom of Muscovy’s name into the “Russian” Empire (“Russia” originates from Rosia, name used by the Greek Orthodox Clergy in regards to Kyivan Rus') Under the reign of Cathrine II Muscovites where even pushed for continuing to identify as Muscovites, and where forced to call themselves “Russian”. Lands that “Russia” claims were part of the original Rus’, but actually weren't, are Novgorod, Suzdal, and Ryazan, since in historical texts of XI-XII centuries they are mentioned as separate entities from Rus’. They can be considered parts of extended Rus’, although their culture was distinct from main Rus’. In 1493 Moscow prince Ivan III appointed himself to be the Great Ruler of All Rus’. No other kings acknowledged that. From that point on Muscovy started to make false claims on Rus’ ownership. “Russia” is an offshoot of Ukraine and not the other way round, despite what Soviet and “Russian” historians have been trying to say for years. Kiev was a developed cultured capital when Moscow was just another swamp village. Germany used to call itself the Holy Roman Empire, that didn’t mean they became the Romans, and all of a sudden had a right to claim whole of Italy and its history, but yet, that’s exactly what “Russia” did in regards to Rus’-Ukraine, which is a horrible injustice!

I am a Russian citizen and I am against any war. Ukraine is independent state. Unfortunately, several further generations will have been paying the price for all of that.

Maybe I’m extremely ignorant but I can’t imagine going back to a country that’s still at war after escaping. Yes it’s peaceful in those areas now but what if the fighting starts again maybe those who came back won’t be as lucky. Isn’t it better to wait it out. My own grandad went back during the Bosnian war after escaping and Ill never understand why the house and the farm were gone burned down he knew that and still went back. My dad had to search for him after the war ended because we didn’t know if he was alive. He was lucky and survived but I know many who went back and were killed leaving their families alone in a different country. Why what was the point of that what drew them so hard to go back they abandoned their children.

@@sigmaputin6888 Sure, sure. Just look at the amount of russian dead bodies. And for what? Exactly, Putin with his riches, enjoying life, while you, simple russian citizens eat crap, and have some of the lower salaries and benefits in the planet. So far what the world has seeing its the inability of Russia of doing what it promised, the murders, the pillaging, the miserable of the russian armed forces, and how low are your standards for everything. You are NOT free to say what you think! You are not free to call the fratricidal war of invasion what it is; a war. So, just shut your ignorant mouth and go away. Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦

The destruction of this war is intense. First the Syrian way shocked me and now this I say that because growing up in America and just turning 30 the conflicts i generally witnessed or past ones i was exposed to have largely been small, tight and mostly safe of total wonton destruction. Not to say afghanistan and iraq werent spared of wide spread damage its just it was spread out over years and the deaths we read about were so small and felt very personal. The numbers that came out of ukraine just absolutely floored me and i honestly believed war in the modern era fought by developed modern countries, unlike the untrained guerilla fighters of the middle east besides a few in Syria, were going to be quieter, more tactical with few large scale battles capable of killing hundreds on both sides. I can't imagine what's it's like to be a civilian because drones, ICBMs and other long range weapons that kill with no warning is just terrifying

🫂🫂🫂 💙💛🌻 God Bless Ukraine. God Bless the Ukrainians. Russia should never have initiated the invasion, they brought so much brutality upon innocent Ukrainians in their carrying out this senseless war of choice, of their choice.

Why can't Ukraine commit not to join NATO

@@baba747baba2 Ukraine is currently at war with Russia. The world is there, here, at this moment. What's the point in request that Ukraine commit to not joining NATO. Ukraine committed to giving up their nuclear weapons in agreement that they would be kept safe, given security guarantee by Russia, of what the results? Albeit, if they had not, the results may be either or, worse or better, we can not say, as that was then, this is now.

@@baba747baba2 From any ongoing communication it seemed the notion of Ukraine in NATO was not happening, going to at this time. If that ever changes it does but it hasn't changed, so what is the point to make mention of it. A side diversion as the attack kills innocent people. Baloney.

@@baba747baba2 Ukraine can decided about itself as any other country. And the only reason why Ukraine, or Georgia, or other countries near Russia wants to be part of NATO is because of how Russia behaves against them. No agressive and interfering Russia, no need to be part of NATO.
