How Sudan’s Smugglers Are Cashing In

The year-long civil war in Ethiopia sent tens of thousands over the border to Sudan. Desperate to escape refugee camps many are turning to smugglers in the hopes of making it to Europe. Wish these people didn't have to suffer so much. A month ago a group of 80 illegal immigrants from Ethiopia were found living in a very small house in South Africa. According to the news, they suspect human trafficking and slave trade. After hearing that, I now wonder whether the guy who works at the shop is doing it because he wants to or he is just a slave. The living conditions are usually so bad. It's so sad.

I have lived in one refugee camp (Dadaab), worked in another (Cox's Bazaar), and held meetings in an IDP which is basically a refugee camp (Bentiu, South Sudan). Also I have lived in Sudan (South Kordofon) for a year. People don't realize how hopeless refugee camps are! They are like a jail where people have lost everything and have no hope for the future. They are trying to leave any way that they can. The "smugglers" are providing a service to people who are trying to escape. Of course the unethical ones are mistreating and profiting off of people's misery and misfortune, especially when extracting more money in the middle of an empty desert. And the report has tried to highlight the problems. But some of the "smugglers" are simply bus drivers taking people from one location to another. We in the West need to be careful in criticizing others. If we really wanted to help the refugees then we would open our doors to more of them and provide more security in the areas of conflict. It is easy to criticize from our air-conditioned homes with our high-speed internet. It is much more difficult to actually live in poor areas of the world where there are very real dangers and few prospects for the future.

It was "help" from the West since the 70's that has created the situation, plus communism in Ethiopia. It turns out that a farmer can't compete with the price of free food, so Ethiopia's ast chance of becoming a stable nation was stolen from them, by the west sending free food and sending the farmers broke, while the countries biggest resourse was farming. The problem was created by communism in Ethiopia, it turns out that governments can't just print money from fresh air to pay the higher wages to pretend they are running a ngood economy, just to con people to move into cities.

Even if 3/4 of that amount is cost (fuel, bribes, snacks and drinks, vehicle maintenance, HR), he pays no taxes, so that makes $250k, that's enough for a modest 30 years of life in many European countries (Poland, Ukraine, Estonia). Am I missing something? (230$ times 5000 smuggled people in 10 months! And he's saying that he's been doing this as a regular job for over two decades? Come on bro Hispanics don’t escape genocide or war. Countries like Venezuela are really suffering but Tigray are actually being killed on a mass scale. Also if they arrive in Europe most countries are obliged to give them asylum cuz their situation is that bad. Not really comparable with latinx

@@jeffleon2254 yes I do, especially for countries like El Salvador. but there’s a reason why there are not many latinx refugees in Europe. It’s simply cuz their cartel/gang violence isn’t deemed as dangerous as a flat out war. In Somalia you have a literal terrorist organisation and bombings, Eritrea lives under a military dictatorship. I’m not trying to invalidate the struggles of latinx cuz I believe everybody in the world deserves a safe home regardless of their nationality or origin.
