Hi Ian, I’m that guy that will always ask a dopey question that you’ve already answered. I have a mini pro 3, am I correct in understanding that I can now take this to London (city area) and fly unrestricted anywhere except over prisons. I was hoping to do this on a Sunday evening or morning when footfall is very light. Also would an empty football stadium by open to fly over too. Big apologies if you’ve answered this question a hundred times already. Kind regards Paul (who also likes flying drones)

They are still very draconian laws considering the risk. National parks around here allow 4WD'ing which completely fucks the environment, off road motorcycles, shooting and hunting native and non-native animals yet they're against drones or MTB riders. Rule makers are often clueless.

It’s more that they cannot stop 4wd’s using legal rights of way designated for vehicles and they don’t stand a chance of downgrading them or getting them removed. Incidentally, there is no legislation that differentiates between a cyclist riding along a right of way or a pedestrian carrying a bag - the law that did was overturned a very long time ago when on appeal, it was decided that pedestrians can carry objects and the way in which they carry their object has no guidance in the law - I know that all sounds very sov cit, it kind of is because frankly, there is a difference and it will get closed double quick if it ever arrived in court, you’d end up paying a lot of legal fees just to be the fool who tried it when all they had to do was jump off the bike and push it along the right of way to the boundary of the landowners land on request.

Just a quick point on the 120 metre rule. If you are out in the mountains or hilly areas and are walking uphill as the drone is flying, just change the home point while you're moving and the drone will go higher (up to 120 metres) based on the new home point created while walking. Otherwise, great, concise video. Cheers!

I used to have that same opinion so I get what you're getting at. But since following two of these so called auditors and being a fully fledged UAV pilot with insurance I'm now of the opinion that the auditors are actually doing the public good. Because those decent ones are evidencing how many freedom's are being taken away from the public due to Karen's and corporate attitudes to the public. People think they own the sky Businesses think they own the sky People still think it's against the law to record you or take photos in public places. I've been subject to these morons and I'm not going out my way to annoy anyone.. These peeps will hunt you down and harras you for flying. They get it in their heads that your spying on them

  • @mind5403

I disagree. The only change to the law, according to this video, is 400 meters away from prisons, this has got nothing to do with auditors, its because people are dropping drugs into prisons. Can you point me to a video of an auditor using a drone illegally? Auditors are flying drones where the law states they can. I don't see how people flying drones legally is going to 'eventually ruin things further for us all' People react badly to auditors flying drones because they are ignorant of the law, i don't see how anybody being 'antagonised or scared' by somebody flying lawfully will get the law changed. People are always going to moan about drones, I was flying my drone in my city centre last year taking shots of a new building being built, I was on public land and flew over the building, I was a good 50 meters above it by the way, and the building site manager came out to me to tell me that I can't do it, what I was doing was completely legal, should the law be changed because he didn't like it? He could claim I was trying to antagonise and scare, when I was doing nothing of the sort, I don't think people who are ignorant of the law who have a negative emotional reaction about a lawfully activity are going to get drone laws changed. The people who are going to ruin it are people purposely flying illegally near airports and prisons.

@@srjwari it's rampant! There was a Times article the other day (iirc) that was complaining of "stealthcamming" - a neologism coined by the article's author, bemoaning the legitimacy of people (read "men") photographing her, or any woman (won't someone think of the females?) in a public place whilst committing no crime whatsoever. Why the editor let that one pass is anyone's guess. Nobody show her the work of Henri Cartier Bresson. People are idiots! 🙄

@@eighteenfiftynine yup people are idiots and the reason the press goes with stories like this is because fear sells.. It's why every news story has something for you to worry about. The average person going about their life wanting to enjoy a hobby are now seen as preditors and spies.. I'm not being funny but every single person has a mobile recorder in their pockets every single human being at any time could record you and you wouldn't know unless it was obvious... But a drone that 120m high taking photos of the mountain or a bridge is now the problem.. Please for the love of all things will people turn off the news, switch off the social sites and turn on some brain cells.

Great video Ian Happy New year. I made my self a member of GA, no brainer full access to DS and insurance. I live around a large area of sssi around Cannock Chase and Chasewater. I even contact Lichfield Council to ask if I could fly from the public foot path. A swift NO was e-mailed back there excuse someone was killed by a model aircraft on Dartmoor ?. More damage is done to the heathers by people walking over the heathers and not keeping to the paths. There is another area I would like to fly along a stretch of cannel. SSSI No drones flying to protect lilies and grasses. What a joke. Cars from fisherman parked along the grasses, casting lines across the lilies dragging fish across them leaving disregarding lines and hooks Come the start of the fishing season the local Facebook group will be full of photos of injured birds with hooks and lines in them. I thought I would miss the capability of the Mavic drones but far from it. The Mini 3 I currently fly is more than capable for the construction sites and industrial areas my clients ask me to photograph and video, the photos are great and the 4k video is brilliant. The best reason to move to the Mini series of drones though is the freedom to fly in areas that are totally out of bounds for the heavier drones.

I was well pi$$ed off, and many others also they did that (they couldn’t give a damn). Since then I’ve only flown a few times due to ‘restrictions’ and deciding to either sell and buy a Mini 4 Pro or wait for the 5 Pro with hopefully a 1” sensor.

Great information as usual.. I had a couple of drones ending up with Mini 3.. it was the most stable.. but never got enough time to develop any real flying skills.. Progress was interrupted by people and their attitudes: You are not really welcome or always looked upon as suspicious... I sold the kit at a loss. Now the criteria is changing again and I'm glad to be out of it.. I used the drone for photography mainly and still have a proper camera but rarely use that either now. People are suspicious of photographers too.. don't walk through a park with a camera for the same reasons as drone use.

Great stuff. Just one more note - some aircraft can fly below 500ft legally. For example, paramotors which I fly myself. There is no minimum height for us - but we still have the usual other rules (500 ft away from any manmade object, persons, etc). I only mention as there might otherwise be an expectation from drone pilots (which I also am!), that they cannot possibly encounter a manned aircraft below 500ft, but that is not the case at all. thanks for the video.

Hence why even flying a sub 250g legally requires the drone to be in VLOS of the operator so that you can see the airspace around the drone and immediately drop altitude if a manned aircraft is nearby.

Great walkthrough Ian who plays with drones! We are coming from EU to Scotland later this year, and while some of the flying I'd like to do would be in open countryside, a lot would also be in more built up areas. Now I have a Mavic 2, Air 2S, and the original Mavic Mini. So I think what I'll do is just buy myself a Mini 4 Pro before we head on over to the UK... I have my Flyer ID already, just the Operator ID to go and we should be all set. Anyway, good videos from you as always, keep up the good work! Cheers from Sweden :)

As a freelance cameraman I sometimes use my drones professionally. But, when I am on vacation abroad, I love to bring one of my smaller drones (Mavic 2 Pro) with me. I know my drone is well over 249 grams, thus respecting the 50m and residential rules 😇 And, I always have this habit, to download multiple drone-map apps. I just don't want to rely on the DJI maps alone. And I want to spend my vacation days doing fun stuff, enjoy nature, cities and relax… rather than spending time to the authorities that I was not aware of the restrictions. Am I too neurotic? _(And yes, I will get a sub 250g for roadtrips)_

A drone question if I may, I have a Mavic 2 pro, A2cofC and I take out insurance when I do commercial work. But I have to carry out roof top surveys in built up areas. If I am flying on private property, no persons within 50m but inevitably close proximity to the neighbouring properties (sometimes adjoining the survey property) am I breaking the rules? Ideally I don’t have to buy a sub-250g drone to do commercial work…..Thanks. Ben

One problem is folks from other countries who fly drones. One of my neighbours takes off with a drone from his back garden, Talking to him is difficult as he is Bulgarian and rather aggressive, Where he flies to, with his drone, one is never sure as it zooms away for a good time and certainly is not i line of sight. however, folks around here do get shirty with drones flown from back gardens and possibly along the line of their homes.

Hi Ian - Air Property rules in the UK, also come into effect whilst flying over private property - Let me explain to all your subscribers as I was hit with a visit from the local officer for breaching these rules with an old neighbour - I took off from my landing pad and flew out over my hedge and into the countryside, like you do. When i was returning there were people below so i avoided them as per the rules and came back into land which cut the corner of my neighbour's property by a couple of feet. They had a camera which recorded my drone and called the local establishment. They arrived and this law to me. I explained why i did this and they stated i should have landed my drone and waited for the people to pass then take off and fly back over my hedge again, thus avoiding my neighbour's Air Property. To be honest, if i'd done this they would have stolen my drone. I apologised to the officer and my neighbour for this. So if you fly below 400 feet, which is the law in the UK, be aware of the property you fly over, as it's also protected by law to prevent you from flying over it if your drone makes too much noise or affects a person's wellbeing. I thought I'd send the rules to your subscribers - Hope this helps. WHAT IS AIR PROPERTY? Air property refers to the airspace above a property. In most instances, if you own the land the property is built on (i.e. you are the freeholder), you also own some of the airspace above the building. This doesn’t mean you own limitless airspace, however. In the UK, airspace is divided into two types - the lower stratum and the higher stratum. The lower stratum is the space immediately above and around your property. There is no exact measurement for this space, but if activity in the area is likely to affect your reasonable enjoyment of your land and property then intruders can be prevented from entering it. For example, if an aircraft flies too low and the sound is likely to affect your day-to-day wellbeing, then it would be considered an infringement of your air rights. The upper stratum is the height above which intrusion is unlikely to affect reasonable enjoyment of your property. Apart from in Scotland, your air property does not extend endlessly into the sky. The upper stratum in the rest of the UK is generally considered to be approximately 500 to 1000 feet above your property, according to Section 76 of the Civil Aviation Act 1982.

Good to hear that the DJI app has removed their restrictions in favour of the CAA ones as I go t bit by this last year. Went to fly near my parents, having checked in Altitude Angel whether the local airport and airfield would be an issue. According to their CAA maps we were good to fly. Unfortunately the built-in DJI apps believed that we were in restricted airspace so the day was a scrub.

I think from now on and up until the CAA move their arse and release the new set of rules (YAWN), every recreational flyer should be purchasing a Mini. Then, and only then when CAA get off their arse, then we decide whether to go down the heavier drone routes, and see how good or crap the new restriciones are.
