Hi all Kevin here As the engineer of the #50 I like to say thank to all of you me and van and Ralph love this rail road and work all summer long to try and keep it up and running #50 is a blast to run at more than 1700 pounds it can be a handful she runs on propane in the water car 3 5 gallon tanks the side tanks hold 20 gallons of water I have been to train mountain with it 3 times and yes I have derailed it at the 4 way crossing took 5 guys and 45 minutes to rerail it there's about 4 miles of running at van's and can take about 2 and a half hours to run with one water stop hope this helps you in your thoughts.

With all the bad news happening this 2020 watching your videos is a morale booster. Mankind can do some bad things but watching this little steamer chugging away makes me think there is also a goodness to man ... a creativity. The steamer sounds like my moms old sewing machine - poetry in motion. I'm a retired engineer so I love infrastructure. The roadbed, the little switch machines, 844 and the steamer ... the whole creative enterprise lifts my spirit. There is some good in the world. Your channel proves that.

You surely did not disappoint! It was a joy to watch the footage of Van's Uintah 50 out on the tracks. I had no idea that the Uintah Railway was his favorite railroad too. I'd love to learn if he's been over that Railway when the steamers were running back then. One of our local residents, the grandmother of one of my friends, Lillian had ridden the Railway a few times back when she was around six years of age. I am thrilled to be living so close, just a little over an hour away to the old railway. In fact, one of my plans for this weekend is to drive down to the old railroad route and do some looking around. Although I've been there several times it's still neat to go there and imagine myself going back in history and seeing the old towns and mines as though they were still there. I've seen old photographs online as well as at the Uintah Co. library, and watched the DVD "The Uintah Railway" from The Rocky Mountain Railroad Club and Machines of Iron. Once again, you two have put on a great show! Thank you for bringing us along for the ride, and for letting us see Van's little railway. He definitely has a passion that can be appreciated by many. Hi Robert. It’s just really something to see that big massive engine on that huge railroad. It’s such and amazing locomotive I still find it hard to believe that Van scratch built that out in his garage. While at the same time working on that rail road! When I move to California all the locomotive was with a frame and wheels and some of the running gear. The next time I saw it it had a boiler on it which she had someone build. But it was just really fun to see it come together like that. What an amazing achievement

Thanks again Toy Man TV!.This one is something extraordinary. Nice to see actual scale live steam models running on Van's impressive railroad. I was just trying to figure out why the 50's 'air pumps' were working / squeaking away (when there obviously are no connecting air lines / reservoirs / air brakes) when Karen asked the same question - perfect timing! I was also thinking this is the perfect solution for people like me who are OK at the mechanical parts of layout building but lack in artistic and scenery making skills. No backdrop required! Adding realistic trees and grass is 'natural'! Too bad track and rolling stock costs are so high relative to H.O. scale. If I lived anywhere near there, I'd happily offer my civil engineering / surveying skills to Van for some track re-alignment; some of those gradient transitions look severe enough to cause derailments! I thought 50's front engine was going to ride the ties at the end of that short bridge. It does function well to show off no. 50's articulation undulating over the rough parts of the track, however. Looking forward to more on Van's railroad if you can.

Many of us have tried to talk Van into cutting down some of those hills and he just doesn’t want to do it. He likes his railroad the way he likes it. For what it’s worth there is another diet in this group by the name of Flanders. Who is also built an amazing backyard rail Road and three gauges. 7 1/2, 12, and 24! We have tried to convince them to let us come film with no luck so far. However as Van is a regular over there and here in Flanders have lunch once a week I think we now have an in

What a gorgeous piece of kit

The Uintah Railroad had 66* curves on 7.5% grade. A 66* curve has a R = 91.804 feet. When Baldwin built No 50 they laid a 66* curve to test whether it would actually go around it and there is a photo of No 50 on that curve in the Baldwin plant. Baldwin forgot that the grade was 7.5% or got it mixed up with 1.5% and built the crown sheet for the 1.5% grade so when the loco was tested on the railroad, it did OK until coming down Baxter Pass and the water went right out of the water glass. Two things happened: 1. the fireman quit after one trip and 2. Baldwin sent the properly made crown sheet parts to be installed. The rear engine unit does also swivel slightly to help negotiate the sharp curves.

@@ToyManTelevision pretty kool i think they went to the sumpter vallet rail raod and was maid in tender locos i dont what happed to them after that im glade some 1 modeled them keep the vids coming i ejoy them alot keep safe an well

That is an amazing engine especially considering the time and skill needed to craft that. I'm just getting into 7.5" gauge with building a galloping goose #1 and quickly learning how much work and knowledge it takes, let alone an articulated steam engine.

When Van said he was going to scratch build the 50 I was like yeah right! All he was able to find her some drive wheels. As far as I know he scratch built everything else although he did have the boiler done by an actual boiler shop

The Uintah 50 reminds me of the south Dakota black hills central mallet. beautiful locomotive. Can't wait to see the f scale railroad guys

Super. I love the Uintah Railway. I grew up not ten miles from Mack, Colorado. I never got to see #50 or #51 in person, eccept as Strasburg #250 and #251, but from the photographs that I have seen, it looks like you did an excellent job constructing this locomotive. 💙 T.E.N.

That is one awesome engine, so is your friend going to build scale structures along his railroad, he as the track down and ballast and the scenery work done, he now needs some structures and stations for the train to go to 😃👍👍

He doesn’t seem to be too interested in that. He does have a functional scale water tank out there which I have not shown. He had someone else build it and they brought it out they were all put together on a big flatbed trailer loaded it off onto cement footings! When we get back out there I’ll have to show that, but so far it’s such a big railroad we have an even been over by it

I have a real interest in our ghost rails here in carbon, emery and grand counties and over the many years have walked every mine of the old grades.There are several points of interest and fabulous sites that most people do not know of that we have discovered. This is awesome..I'd be like a kid in a lollie shop playing on the track with an engine all day every day... ~:0) It's a shame that the noise from the diesel engine that your on in front of the steam train is so loud that you miss hearing most of the sounds of the steam engine.

Hi. I watched the videos you did on this railroad like a hundred times now and think it's so cool. Are you planning on doing more videos about this? I would deffidently like to see some of those other cool locomotives there, Maybe like a train collection tour or something? Although I know you said different people own them. 🚂 But I need to see that Unintah 50 in another video again.

That was fun, I hope when you go out there to video this engine running you can show the a fair bit of the engine workings. I'm sure I'm not the only gearhead here. ;-) Watching this got mind remembering a family friend buying a couple of truckloads of "scrap" steel. It was 20 foot sections of some of the smallest track rail I had seen. It was about two inches tall. There were 4 totes of nails, connectors and some switching gear. He had made an offer for the whole lot by mistake. I bet he had 30 tons of rail not the ton and a half he was expecting. This was when scrap steel was 18 to 20 dollars a ton. He offer the guy 25 dollars a ton. He got it to make marine railways for people along the lake. He got bored so he started a railroad around his property. He said it was for the grandkids. I've been out of the area for 30 years so I wonder if it's still there.

That mallet is one beautiful beast! I have Mantua's model in HO. It be nice if Blackstone would bring out the 50 and 51 in HOn3. Some of the scenery does remind me of Uintah's row. Smart idea using a water car for his office chair. Then 10 miles of track, oh my. The Tooele Valley probably had nine at the most. Has he timed himself to see how it takes to ride the whole system?

It actually sounds more like a shay and a rod engine. Lots of chuffs and very little speed

your railroad is outstanding i wish i could build my own railroad but i know it can be very expensive i would love to see your train layout

There can not be too many 7-1/2" gauge locomotives like the Unitah #50. If I am not mistaken, this same locomotive was for sale at the 2015 Train Mountain triennial for $60,000 (trailer included).

Fortunately the snakes are just as interested in avoiding us as we are avoiding them. And with us guys out there all of the time generally speaking the snakes will leave the property and go somewhere else. Usually when a rattlesnake meets a human it goes very badly for the rattlesnake.

Great Video 👍 The track is kind of wobbly. It needs a surfacing gang. I used to be a surfacing gang Foreman in 98. Some is character but some is kind of sketchy. 9:48 coming off the bridge that big hump. 10:20 stuck in a dip. Please don't misunderstand it's a really cool Railroad. I would love to see it and help fix it!

Dale: I could help noticing the coupler in the front of the engine and then asking myself how the heck did Van make that? Of course you also have to ask where did he get the head light lens. Talking about water? Does he run out on his runs and is there a water tank or water tanks? Van and company were not as good at shooting video as you. Neat, unique, and fun video. Never boring.

Yeah I wish they did shut the engine off on the work train when it wasn’t running at the very least. But they were just sort of screwing around out there and I guess it didn’t occur to them that they were spoiling their own audio. But when you do get a chance to hear that beast it really has a wonderful tone to it. I was there and pointed out very little chuff. But lots of internal sounds and the constant wind of the electrical generator and pumping of the water injectors. Music to my ears.

Oh and the cobbler is something that he purchased somewhere. Cast-iron and saw it rusts quite nicely just like the prototype. The only other thing store bought on the whole locomotive for the drive wheels. He found wheels from a different locomotive and was able to get castings made off of the wood patterns. As far as I know everything helps with scratch built including Carver in his old wood patterns for the dorms and stack. The boiler was constructed by a boiler contractor.

Toy Man Television Neat. I always wanted to work as a volunteer rebuilding a steam engine. Of course they had lots of hazardous materials like asbestos and lead. Still it would be fun.

This place is fascinating. This doesn't look like the Unitah basin. I don't know if anything can be as weird as the Unitah basin? I have heard it's one of the weirdest places on Earth where they mine Gibsonite, a paint additive. Isn't that like the only known reserves of the material? Thanks for another awesome video.

When I had my backyard rail road some 20 years ago I had a 4% grade. My new rail road is utterly flat! I got so tired of fighting that hill.

I believe the Mantua one is a standard gauge. No matter it’s still a really neat model. I have the LGBT version, which I assume has been modeled under size as it was fairly small compared to what I thought it was going to be. But it’s easy to forget the first local motors were actually quite small compared to other articulated engines

That really is a neat Model ! Wouldnt want to see it hit the ground ! How does he manage a derailment ? I mean he cant lift it and i cant see any serviceroads ? Drive carefully...Thanks, so fun video !

I haven’t yet seen it go on the ground but I’ll bet it’s not easy to get it back on the rails. The pilot truck would be a piece a cake. Beyond that it would just be a trick

Nice!! You guys need to go back and get Van to fire up the steamer and put a bunch of cars and some dead diesels in tow!! Todays picture quality is so much better.

I believe it is coal fired but I am not sure. The other trains running out there or running on propane for fire safety reasons. I know Van always wanted to run this on coal and as far as I know he does

Wow I have one of those in G gauge Got in in its original box LGB brand its new was 750$ some hobby shop in Columbus OH had it along with a bunch of LGB that had been brought in for a estate sale they had no idea what it was worth got it for $200 !!! and I bought up all the rest of the same lot for pennys on the dollar most new in boxes ! now one day have to finish my all steel elevated outdoor railway ! one question was it able to cross the bridge on the figure 8 part of the line or was it too heavy for it ??

Not really sure but when a tree falls on your house and takes out all the powerlines it makes quite a racket. As you may know we’ve been hit by hurricane velocity winds and all our power is off. Making commenting back to people really difficult as I can’t even keep my cell phone charged. Sorry about this but we will get back on it as soon as we have power. I am guessing it is gas fired as no visible smoke. Also guessing the tender holds a fair bit of water. Are the side tanks used? Thank you for showing.

I found a photo of the rusting boiler and cab of #50 in Guatemala, I am pretty sure the picture was taken in 2011. I can send a link to the photo if you would like.

Thank you for the enjoyable video. I've been enjoying the "live steam" hobby since I was a teenager. The preference back then was band, shop and other tech classes in high school during the 1970's. It's been a few years back (maybe three or four), that I ended up bringing home a lot of old paper railroad historical publications, VHS tapes and these set of 2.5" scale 2-6-6-2T frames that were used as paper weights in the back of pickup to hold down all the boxes of stuff that came from a LA Live Steamers Spring Meet Presidents Auction. The creator of the frames (whose name I'm not going to mention here to protect the guilty) also gave me the prints. It goes to say, the acquisition to find additional research materials, drawings and prints has begun thanks to your video. Ebay and Roger Goldmann at www.livesteamlocomotives.com was helpful. While I can't exactly get up to Train Mountain or Bitter Creek and Western should "Van" and or his engine get this far south, I'd like compare notes with anyone that may have built this beautiful mallet.

Did you see the post that I put up on the community tab about what’s been going on here and about number 50’s trip to Train mountain? It just isn’t good. I’m afraid much of Train mountain has burned. Truck will be repaired but you cannot rebuild a tree. Perhaps 50 or 60 years from now it will be back to normal. Do you check the community tab I have a photo there

@@ToyManTelevision I must unequivocally state that I value life over property having lost a lot recently in my own calamity. And I am recovering. I do enjoy your videos from the comfort of my easy chair watching the "big screen" TV in the living room with a fire box on the KZread app. Rarely if ever do I watch KZread from the PC and have been unaware of the community page. What I know about Train Mountain is what I see in the backyard railroading pages on Facebook. Even then I'm not all that active on social media. I'm a member at LALS and we have issues with fire in Griffith Park. Anybody that's interested in train mountain can view their web page at trainmtn.org/tmrr/index.shtml It's a blessing that every one got out alive. Property can be replaced and rebuilt. The reforestation will take years or decades to for the forests to recover. Angles Forest is nearby me , I've witnessed the results. I keep telling everyone this is an election year, stay well.

I'm sure people have asked this but what guage is the railway 12 inch or 15inch?

That’s #9. The white one. We sold the red one as I really can’t drive a clutch well anymore. Bought 9 special order with an auto as the docs were saying this day would come. I have no intentions of selling blue even if I can’t work the clutch. And I can still drive it easily on the open highway where I don’t have to shift very often. Stupid arthritis.

Toy Man Television I here you. I have a 2014 GT with 5 speed manual. There were days when it was not much fun to drive. She is sweet and you can get in a lot of trouble.

Well the voiceover is just me from a couple of days ago. Karen and I doing our usual deal. The video itself was shot by those guys on several different occasions starting around 2005 I believe. I am editing here and adding new information in looking over the pictures, I believe some of that video dates back to around 1999

Where about is this railroad? I'd like to look at it from google maps or Earth and get an idea how big it really is. Pretty awesome.

We’re on for various reasons “Van” doesn’t want anyone to know his real name or the exact location of the railroad. He worries a great deal about vandalism and theft. But mostly he just likes to ride on his trains and be left alone! He almost qualifies as an off grider as the only utility out there is running water. Anyway I am willing to say that it is in Utah and in the great basin.

Nope!! All good. Running today. (Friday).

Nice tank engine with oil in the tank and water in the tender I think. I do not see a connection from the tender to the locomotive. It looks like water and oil stored internally in the locomotive. How much oil and water is required to make the round trip.

I’m not sure how he gets water into the side tanks. But the tank that Kevin is sitting on is a model of a Uintah water car. Most of the trains have six of them. the principal reason for the six water cars was to get Potable water out to the mines. But Ralph shores me they also use that water in the locomotive pumping it up into the side saddle tanks. In fact the locomotive would lose so much tractive effort if the water level got low in the side tanks that it was better off to just run it from the water car. But if you look at pictures there are usually six of those and Van has modeled one. Van has water at several locations around for the railroad. Mostly just from hoses. The only utility on the property is running water which he paid to have brought in. Before that water was supplied from a large wooden water tank that he had constructed which we didn’t see in the video beautiful and absolutely beautiful 2 1/2 inch scale wooden water tank

I wish that the 50 and 51 could have been saved. (Also known as sumpter valley 250 and 251). Sadly though they got scrapped after guatamala finished with them

As I understand it only one of them was scrapped in Guatemala. The other one simply rusted and fell to pieces in place. I’ve seen photographs of it just rotting away. Breaks my heart.

Yeah something like that. The guys at Sumpter apparently wanted to try and save one but something I guess happened with politics or something so the only things that were able to be brought back were the tenders that went with the mallets, which are the tenders that go with SVRy 19 and 20

If they only could make a 1:1 size replica.

I would be cool to have a super quiet honda 2000 generator powering a a hybrid type locomotive.

I've never seen an articulated locomotive with tanks on the side of the boiler like that. I've seen the saddle kind, but not this "suitcase" style.

that is how the real ones were built too had a small coal bunker on the locos back not even a tender on the real one . they ran a short distance on really tight curves on a private company railway .

@@johnsiders7819 Some of these mallets did get tenders as the companies using them found it more convenient to fill the tenders at a less frequent interval than the coal bunkers.

I don’t believe so. Judging from some subtle changes in the paint job I think this was a video over a period of time. So some of that video could be its first outing on the railroad

We were invited to come up for this particular event even though it’s not open to the public. But we have a special plan to go to Ely Nevada to witness history instead. Upcoming show on that but I just posted a photograph taken this morning. First fire in the locomotive number 81 in 63 years!!

I have a model of that one from M D C but it is stander gauge not narrow ! ant that funny?

Beautiful locomotive....such a shame the gas-powered engine the film "crew" was riding, was so loud it drowned-out most of the sound of the steam loco.
