4 Mile Ride on the World's Largest Backyard Railroad

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We are back to "Van's" very private 7 1/2 inch gauge, 2 1/2 inch scale backyard railroad. This week we take a ride over the 4-mile loop to the pond for lunch.
We also explore the "steam shop" to see Unita 50, a huge articulated 2 1/2 inch scale scratch build steam locomotive and the flagship of the railroad. IN 2 weeks we will have video of several of the steam locomotives running on the line. Including this HUGE model!
Also, several gas-powered "diesel" locomotives including a 1/8 scale model of Union Pacific 844. NO not that 844, the GP 30, the Nevada Southern's retired Union Pacific 844 Diesel Locomotive. When UP retired this diesel 844, the name "844" reverted to its original owner, the famous UP steam engine.
The total trackage is around 10 miles. All are maintained by a SMALL group of friends every weekend who also take the work train over the longest loop to the pond for lunch.
As we ride pay special attention to the trackwork and maintenance and keep in mind, they have 10 miles of track to maintain!

Now if i could ride on that railroad - but with a padded chair with a back and arm rests, I could quite peacefully and contentedly doze as the scenery rolls by. But if I can't ride the railroad I'm glad I at least have this video. Thank you for making it, it was a very pleasant and soothing one to watch :)

This brings back memories of my friend Bobber's outdoor 2' gauge railroad through his property. He had a Plymouth gas engine and 4 cars, all purchased from a local amusement park. It was a hoot to ride, even though it only went in a large circle, meandering past trees and over small trestles. He eventually moved and the railroad was dismantled.

You’re absolutely right it is the middle of nowhere. There’s an old joke this isn’t the middle of nowhere but you can see it from here. Well there goes in toward this place when they say that. This is the absolute middle of nowhere it’s a long drive on the two lane and then a long drive on the dirt road and then finally you get on a train and really go into the middle of nowhere

Island of misfit trains of course it is possible to do something much smaller. We showed you guys Adam Pinellas is railroad that he’s building around his house. Other than the fact it has to cross two driveways that’s a little bit tricky it just goes in a big circle around his house. And it’s not a big lot or anything so it can be done.

This was a fun day out! I enjoyed this little trip into the wilderness! Fun to ride the train up to the pond! I only had one complaint... When we reached the pond, a rather large thistle reached me!! Of course.. There was a generous target for a nasty thorn! I love the area.. Really makes me a bit homesick for the area I called "home" for most of my life! The only thing I was wondering... Just how many BOBCATS had their eyes on us the whole time we were out there????

Yeah I think at any given time if you had to walk out of there you’d be five or 6 miles from the nearest Road. Assuming somebody came by on that road. And there’s no cell phone service out there. If you run into somebody in the wilderness and say how do you get by without a cell phone will say what’s a cell phone?

We’re not completely sure as Van no longer keeps track. Pun intended! At first it was tracking every inch of it by keeping track of how much rail he was putting down and that’s how we know that first loop was just over 1 mile. But in examining the aerial views and just trying to put measurement on all of the different routes it’s somewhere right around 10 miles. Probably just a little more

Yes every single loop has a name I’m just not quite sure what they are. That original loop that we laid it’s now called the mountain division for the mountain loop. And it actually consists of two different loops that go up around the top of that ridge. I think the pond loop is called the pond loop! But I’m really not sure about that. But they’ve rattled off certain names that were in one ear and out the other but there’s like 15 different lines out here but all have different names.

He built this to screw around with it and that’s exactly what he’s doing and if you ask him what’s going to happen after he dies he really doesn’t know and he really doesn’t care. However there’s a lot of interest in a guy offering to buy the railroad and perhaps turning it into a club. That is to say after Van is gone.

Yes Flyers are a real threat out there. That very first year we were laying track a wild fire came through and we were really scared we were gonna lose the whole thing. With the fire department turned it in and headed south and that was that. But there’s always that danger. This is a pretty common look out here and with the cedar trees and everything in place it does look a tremendous amount like Central Utah which is where Karyn is from.
