For context: "Mom, I am a rich man" is a nod to the singer Cher. Her mother was nagging her to find and settle down with a rich man, and her response was, "Mom, I am a rich man." This was during an interview where she commented that men were a luxury, not a necessity. We love a self-sufficient, successful queen.

Taylor and Katy did have beef (hamburger suit) Taylor was salty (wearing a fries costume), over Katy taking a couple of Taylor’s backup dancers. Taylor’s song Bad Blood was about Katy Perry then Katy Perry did a diss song called Swish,Swish. So at the end of this video we see them basically squishing the “beef” bc Taylor was being “salty” 🍔🍟

I watched this right after the Bad Blood reaction too, and he was like "haha I didn't know they were friends... or that they weren't or anything" and I was CACKLING

A couple more things: 1) I love how many people note she’s spitting proper bars in the first verse; 2) the verse is properly “why are you mad when you could be GLAAD” - the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation; 3) Ryan has a scene of the Stonewall Riots next to his painting of the trailer park. (And of course plays Deadpool, a canonically pansexual character.)

Blake lively, Ryan Reynolds and Taylor are friends. Taylor even used their daughter’s names in songs James, Betty & Inez.

The "Mom, I am a rich man" is a quote from Cher. In an interview in the 80s or 90s, Cher was talking about how, despite her tremendous success, her mom would tell her she needed to marry a rich man. That was her response , "Mom, I am a rich man" meaning whatever you think a rich man could do for her, Cher could do for herself. I am guessing Taylor used that as a jab to the "why aren't you married yet" haters. Plus Cher is pretty iconic in the LBGTQA community.

Google the cast/cameos for this video. There is a lot of stuff packed into this video. It was an anthem to support the LGBTQ+ community. The amount of influencers and stars is pretty crazy. Also, the quote on the wall is from Cher. Her mother told her to marry a rich man and that was her response. Katy Perry was tapped for this as a resolution to their "feud". I learned all this from the breakdowns by Swifties online.😂😂😂

FYI, this came out years before Barbie, so any similarities are just coincidence ❤

Yes you got it exactly right! Let people live their lives. Also: so funny you mentioned Katy and then there she was! They had a famous feud (Taylor wrote "Bad Blood" about it), but then they made up and having her in the video was like "See? we're cool." You missed the earlier line: she said, "I see you over there on the internet/comparing all the girls who are killing it," and she says "we figured it out: we all have crowns," and then repeats stop stepping on our gowns. Meaning: there can be more than one successful female, stop pitting them against each other. We all have crowns!

There is also the Katy Perry issue that is addressed in the video with the hamburger and french fries costumes and them "hugging it out" around the end of this video. There are a lot of references to being "gay" like wearing a crown, not to step on my gown, and more straightforwardly, "...because shade never made anybody less gay."

Not really to smooth things over, but to clarify. She discusses it in Miss Americana, when she basically breaks her father’s hold on her career as she’s changing record labels. She talks about needing to make political statements, to make it clear she’s a feminist, and how horrified she was that her queer friends had to ask if she supported them because they didn’t know. It’s not really a coincidence that this song came out with Lover, either - Big Machine didn’t want her saying anything that “might alienate her country audience.” 🙄 A little after this song came out, she also gave an interview saying that it took her a long time to realize she could advocate for communities she is not a direct member of.
