Many of you probably know Synology as a manufacturer of NAS, or Network Attached Storage. Ultimately, this is nothing more than central storage in a network. In this case, presumably your home network. With QNAP and Synology, there are two big players, but Ugreen is also making great strides in trying to get a foot in the door. Especially because the cloud is becoming increasingly important and these systems can now offer a private cloud, so to speak.
To start with, Ugreen is offering 2-bay systems, i.e. for 2x 2.5 or 3.5-inch hard disks, as well as 4-bay and even 6 or 8-bay systems, which, however, are priced out of the budget for home use. However, the three variants with up to 4 bays are quite different. Here you get very good equipment for comparatively little money. While the DXP2800 and DXP4800, i.e. the 2 and 4-bay variants, can also accommodate 2 M.2 SSDs, the DXP4800 Plus even comes with an SSD as a system hard disk. Furthermore, the processors differ from N100 in the smaller variants up to a Pentium 8505 with 5 cores. All devices are supported by expandable 8 GB DDR5 RAM. The connections range from a 2.5 GbE to 10 GbE and from USB 2.0 to USB3 Gen 2. The memory card reader is reserved for the 4-bay systems, while the 4k@60Hz HDMI port benefits all devices.
As you can see, there is some powerful hardware available to cover you and your NAS needs.
However, the software part will be much more exciting, because installing good hardware is one thing, but the support provided by well-integrated and, above all, mature software is even more important for a device like this in my opinion.
After my test of the 4800 Plus, I bought the 480T Plus in the Kickstarter Early Bird sale for my work on the videos and kindly received my device in advance.
The DXP480T Plus is explicitly aimed at users who are looking for speed, as it relies on NVMe storage. It is also the only device in the series to have a WLAN module, although this was of less interest to me. The Thunderbolt 4 ports were more exciting. However, you have to do without the SD card reader.
