    I ended up backing for a 4800 plus. I am happy with my choice even with the pros and cons. You all touched on something that is common these days, dropping half baked products mainly software. Hardware wise it's a great option for the kickstarter price. If ugreen never gets the OS right, like others have mentioned we can install our own OS which I am fine with. The hardware is polished, the specs are there thats what matters to me.

    I backed it, the initial buy in is very appealing and hardware is amazing. They have posted their sw roadmap so we'll see how well they add and improve it. The most challenging part was getting the hw right and they pretty much nailed it. Great insight and feedback though I feel like most of this panel is missing the mark with the current state... it's in the backing stage and the point of MVP releases.. get feedback and iterate and improve. At least, hoping the other big players are taking notice and refreshing their products as there hasn't been much new recently. I think Frank's comments make a lot of sense and a thoughtful recap

    Was going to do that a couple of days before the crowdfunding ends. Tbh I really just want people to know what they are backing here. Good hardware, WiP software. It's alot of money and many people will be committing money to this system that they cannot easily re-spend on something else afterwards of it's not for them. I know you could say that about any solution, but crowdfunding means that they stakes are higher. Hope that makes sense man

    This instills a lot of confidence for me. I have a Synology NAS 2 bay and I am backing the UGREEN 6-Bay because I just want a RAID 1 configuration for content creation and really liked the price. My Synology is on the network, aiming for sharing of finished items (in a RAID 1) but the hardware is super slow and old on it so I don't want to use it for editing. This 6-Bay gives me an opportunity to have 3 creator hard drives (photo editing, video editing, master catalog) and have them with a simple mirrored backup for a nice automated backup that I can plug all into one port on my computer to do the job. I honestly don't even know if I need the network side of it but I haven't seen a cheaper version of what I'm ultimately looking for with this kind of hardware. I haven't tried 3rd party OS but based on your recommendations I will do the research and attempt to put one on this system. Thanks!

  • @xellaz
    @xellazАй бұрын

    If UGreen NAS will be your first NAS, it will be scary to trust your data with it since the software isn't time proven yet. I still backed their Kickstarter campaign though mostly due to how good the hardware is AND because we can install 3rd party OS on it. That said, I'll be using this as an extra backup NAS and media server to play with. Also in regards to security, I'm not too worried only because I already planned to place this behind my hardware firewall and only allow access to it via VPN if accessing remotely. So yea, if UGreen is your first NAS, I feel it is risky but if you know exactly how to set this up securely on your network, it will be an awesome addition as a data storage device plus much more with docker! 😎

  • @WesPerry

    One of the requirements for the review from Ugreen was to test the remote/cloud based service, which I just outright refused to (as mentioned in my video), as there’s no way I’m trusting that potential backdoor into my network for even a minute. As for SMB, I had to authenticate on macOS Once, and then never again. Which almost seems Too easy. On Asustor I have to authenticate every day, and even more if I switch between WiFi and hard wired. Finally recently mine overheated. Though only briefly, I got a temp warning and everything slowed to essentially a stop and then came back again. Looks like I’m going to have to do the thermal paste fix on it after all. Ugh.

    I purchased a used desktop, intel i7 4770, 16GB ram, 256GB sata SSD, etc. for $160. Over black friday I got two 4TB drives. I installed Openmediavault and set up a mirrored zfs vdev. Spinning up docker was fairly easy, and my containers are infinitely useful. I love setting up my NAS that's way more powerful than a synology. Plus i can put up to 8 drives in my mid tower case.. But I understand people that want something like synology, because that's most people. I'm an engineer, my desktop is Linux, I'm comfortable with the terminal. I can spend 5 hours setting up a nas and feel good about it (with plenty of youtube videos teaching me), but I 100% get someone that wants it done for them. BTW, the hardest part for me was setting up a wireguard vpn. I know extremely little about networks and security so I didnt want to mess it up and I spent lots of time on it. Now moving to tailscale, although I'll keep my wireguard server up and running.

    It’s interesting that I was looking at these recently and the I wonder if even the Kickstarter was actually just a marketing gimmick too. As things I noticed on the Kickstarter was that they only allowed the sale in US and Germany which limited market, never seen that personally before. They don’t seem to have hit their targets on all the sales and there was a clause that the project would not happen if the targets were not met and reaching that target had a cutoff date. So adding those together the second and third tier purchases may never have been possible to meet in the timeframe and so the end kickstarter delivery may have been planned to happen and was purely for marketing too?

  • @condon4355
    @condon4355Ай бұрын

    Thank you for the 40 minute video. Different opinions are always good. Like me, many will wait for the last day on kickstarter and decide: Do I support this product or not? Every backer already knows that the hardware is great and software is not yet mature and whether I get the product and I lose a lot of money!!! There are 2 devices on my list: -NASync DXP6800 Pro -DXP480T All-Flash The thought at first was "if" I get the product, leave it in the box for a few more weeks and wait for the software to develop and then use it? Or do I just install Unraid on it? But what annoys me a bit is that I spend money for a product (in my case that's the equivalent of about 1000€ with 40% discount) but if the software is not yet good, I have to buy a license for Unraid and that costs an additional 249x2 dollars that I have to spend!!! So what's the point of the discount? Why release a product that is half finished? So I'm really curious what will happen on the last day before kickstarter ends. Sorry for my honest words. Thank you very much and have a nice weekend

    Great discussion! Very helpful! Will hopefully spur Synology to upping their game on future hardware - Intel CPU (for Plex transcoding), standard 10GB/s, USB ports, etc. I doubt it though - they've become lazy and complacent - "cut and paste the AMD from the last model - job done - that'll do!"! Having said that uGreen NAS isn't 'oven ready' enough for me, and I worry that they won't develop the product sufficiently post kick-starter.

There is still a lot of interest in the hardware. Personally, I only went in for the hardware aspect. I’d it’s software issues I would consider just installing TrueNAS Scale or Unraid, especially since UGOS won’t be supported after your warranty

    *removes balanced KZread'r hat* ... ABSOLUTELY NO WAY they can get a feature like Thunderbolt networking turned around before the proposed early summer release! I will be impressed if they can get this up and running tbh. QNAP achieved it by throwing alot of $ at it, and although QSAN and Promise attempted to market Thunderbolt NAS products - in practice, neither of these solutions ended up as a commercially available device. Even BlackMagic design is working on a NAS system and they cannot/have no included it. If UGREEN achieve this, I will be F-ing STUNNED. *puts YT hat back on* That said, never say never...

    I backed the all-flash model, but saw two reviews where the idle power consumption seemed unreasonably high. Tried to find out more information, even posted on reddit, but to no avail, so I canceled my backing and ordered a Minisforum MS-01 instead. Actually, if I consider that the price of the all-flash NAS is around 500 euros with the current Kickstarter discount, it doesn't seem to be as cheap as people say, compared to something like the MS-01 which is only around 100 euros more expensive (barebones) and comes with an i9 12900H CPU, and an absolute metric ton of networking options. Of course except if someone really needs those 4-5 m.2 slots, but 4 could be accomplished in the ms-01 too with a PCIe card. On the software side, installing Casa OS with Debian, and then adding some containers like Jellyfin or Plex is incredibly easy to do on a custom system.

    Wonder what the "use case" is for a desktop NAS is kind of... . I backed it. I like the hardware. I like the potential of their operating system. I figure it's going to improve enough to be more useful and less buggy that TrueNAS Scale, which in my opinion is a nightmare. Synology DSM is the gold standard of NAS OSes. Let's see how close they get to it. Most other brands can't hold a candle to it.

    I will not put potentially terabytes of data to any companies FIRST NAS OS. I wish them well and hope in the coming years that they create a stable, secure, continuously updated OS. Even though the hardware is sweet, I'll stick with my Synology. If you can use a third party OS, I'll give it a look. I would need to see a confirmation of that option availability in writing from UGreen on a NASync product page. I don't fully trust Facebook or Reddit posts. There is already some contradictions in what they initially said.

    One of my big issues with this whole NAS topic is that nowadays everybody acts as tech people. Like the people who cried about the custom kernel, I am pretty sure about 95% of those people don't even know what the kernel does and what a custom kernel actually means. I cannot imagine that someone cares about a custom kernel and security, and at the same time not comfortable changing the OS on an X86 device :D It is the equivalent of having detailed knowledge about how a car's engine works but at the same time not knowing how to change a tire. Logan was a really good invite in my opinion, as he is someone with already proven technical knowledge, and I also liked Lauri's opinion, as someone who does not act as a technical person and tried to look at the product from an average user's viewpoint. At the same time, I myself didn't really like Frank's review, to be honest. I had the feeling of like when a typical Apple user reviewing some company's first Android phone. One more note on the security aspect. As someone who works in software development and has some experience with big releases, and has worked on some popular software, it is kind of common actually that developers do not focus on security before the final release. In the company I currently work for (one of the big tech daddy companies), security review is one of the latest steps before we release something, since 99% of security-related topics do not make sense to care about when you have software that changes on a daily basis. An open SSH is still much better than what devs usually do to make their life easier, even during beta builds :)

    Genuine thank you for the insight and input! (Really hard in my British tone for that to not sound sarcastic). I see your points, though I would still venture to argue that the system, software and time between now and intended fulfillment to backers is all at the juncture that security needs to be squarely thought out and outlined by now. Especially for a NAS device that will be heading to quite alot of lesser net savvy users. Again, really appreciate the feedback and pov man. Have a great weekend!

    As a non-native English speaker, I always have issues with the "Is my comment sounds sarcastic or not?" topic too 😅 And in case I was a bit confusing, I totally agree with you on this security topic now. Since only a few days before the campaign ends, and if I recall correctly, Ugreen stated that the expected shipping date is June/July, I also think that as of now, they should take care of focusing on the security aspects and just concentrate on the first final release version of the OS. My note was mainly in connection to earlier versions. But I think they should work on the production-ready release soon, instead of focusing on ZFS, iSCSI, and whatever new functionalities. In my humble opinion, they won't be able to properly satisfy everybody since there are a ton of edge cases that do not make sense to spend development resources on (I could talk about issues related to development teams led by management people instead of other devs for days), and they have already delivered Docker support, which is the perfect alternative compared to shipping custom (and usually mediocre) software packages (and it is not that hard to follow up on a few tutorials that a bunch of people are going to create anyways...). Btw, if I were part of that dev team, I would opt for something similar to what CasaOS is doing with its apps (that are basically just Docker images with some config) or like the Applications in TrueNAS Scale - just not with Kubernetes (maybe even let the community add extra packages/repositories, like TrueCharts for TrueNAS). The OpenSource community can do wonders when corporate people let them do what they want... But this does not really matter right now. Until the product is delivered, they should not work on new functionalities but instead focus on making the OS as stable as it can be for a new product. Then, during the first few days/weeks, they should focus on the (hopefully just a few) small bugs/issues reported by the actual end users. After that, they can deliver new functionalities and disrupt the NAS business however they want to do that. But right now, they should focus on the average users, and for them, security is something that you have to take care of. I hope you have a fantastic weekend as well!

    Good hardware isn't enough to charge the RRP prices when the software isn't up to scratch. And excluding everybody except the US and Germany from the kickstarter feels pretty nasty, it's put me off UGreen as a company, and I already have plenty of UGreen peripherals. I'm about to build my own h/w, install Proxmox, Truenas or Unraid, then just add the few apps I need. Apart from future peripherals I doubt I'll ever buy anything big from UGreen.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would think that most people buy a NAS for the entire solution; a combination of hardware AND software. Anyone can put together a good hardware base for a DIY server and probably for less money than a turnkey NAS box. And the software to build a NAS is open source or free. But the value add for NAS systems IS the software which is optimized for the hardware. Except for special use cases, I don't really see much point installing your own software on a prebuilt NAS system. Am I missing something here? Why even bother with a half-baked NAS system if you have to pretty much do all the work anyway?

  • @Hansen999

    @Hansen999

    You would be surprised how difficult it is to build a DIY NAS in a turnkey format. The current cases on the market is just too big and bulky compared to a turnkey solution. I seriously welcome this product range from a "open source - ability to BYO OS" point of view, when that's said, I wouldn't spend 2 minutes on Ugreen OS.

    I think ugreen is a bit in a dilemma here. What's is there unique selling point? Atm it is price per hardware. but even a cheap nas is powerfull enough for a simple storage and backup solution. no normale user need an i5 with 64gb ram. with their marketing campaigns, they addressed a lot of normal user. but could be a problem in the future. because if the hole product is still beta. one bad update, and these people are helpless. a multi os strategie is a good idea. I already said in German Facebook group, they should just sell the hardware. for the typical private customer, they dont need a complex software, like Synology. the basic features and these people are happy. for all other people, ugreen could be a hardware reference.

    I still do not get why people skip backing the product based on the "custom kernel" argument. Ugreen will have to publish their kernel sources (or patches) so what is the problem? I would guess that there are only so many patches as to address specific needs, just like QNAP or Synologoy do as well. I mean, those companies use custom kernels as well and nobody cares about it... That being said, the kernel should be your least concern with security in mind - the rest of the software is closed source anyway, just like with other NAS manufacturers. So either you trust those companies or you do not. Following that logic alone would lead anybody to use some free alternative NAS OS, not even considering the immature UGOS.

    I see your point. But also, look at it from the PoV of the backers who haven't done their "time in the trenches" of I.T and/or general networking. A NAS can be alot more intimidating/time consuming proposition that you think. Yes, they could learn...build..improve..have a better server. But turnkey has always appealed to those users who are less versed on this. That's why it's important that people highlight that the software needs more time in the oven, despite some solid H/W - as those users might not appreciate how significant a point that is. Hope you see my point too many. Have a great weekend
