Ugly Kid Joe depending on who you ask is either a relic of hair metal, , or were comedic hard partying band with a pretty diverse background or both. Despite working hard to make it, their success came pretty quickly and in today’s video let’s explore the detailed history of the band.
The constants in Ugly kid Joes lineup has always been guitarist Klaus Eichstadt and frontman Whitfield Crane who grew up a block away from each other in Palo Alto. Crane’s father would split when he was young recalling to Loudersound My dad split when I was a young kid and that was tumultuous for me growing up. I was always trying to fill that void. I liked sports and what not, but then I found Black Sabbath’s Paranoid. I was hooked immediately, and all those motherfuckers - Halford, Bon Scott, Ozzy, Ronnie Van Zant, Hendrix - became like my father figures.
At the time palo alto was considered middle class by the members own admission but with the rise of silicon valley over the past two decades that’s drastically changed. Funny enough Crane would admit to Loudersound his sister still lives in Palo Alto one block away from Google’s Co-Founder Larry Page. While the future musicians attended the same junior high the pair wouldn’t meet until grade 8 at a dance where Crane offered Eichstadt a joint. Crane would recall to a baca raton paper “klaus and i were the total opposite of chick magnets. We were like chick repellents. Kind of loner type guys.’. Crane would remark that he always got the pair in trouble and Eichstadt was great at getting the pair out of trouble.
It was following high school the pair of musicians ditched Palo Alto feeling it was too serious, relocating to Santa Barbara for school. They eventually moved not too far away to the college party town of Isla Vista , just outside of Santa Barbara. It was here in 1989 Ugly Kid Joe would be formedby Eichstadt and Crane started rehearsing in a small car sized room with posters of Public Enemy and Metal Bands. The band’s music would be inspired by the likes of Judas Priest, AC/DC, early Motley Crue, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Megadeth and Red Hot Chili Peppe . While Lyrically, they would look to Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and rap groups. Ugly Kid Joe would blend heavy metal, folk and funk.
The band went through several monickers initially including Overdrive and later on SWAT which stood for suburban white alcoholic trash and later on i don’t know if i can say this one youtube the regurgitated anal vapors. Maybe you guys could read lips on that one.
In their early years the band were desperate to play any club or open for any band who would have them. According to Spin magazine it was a sympathetic club owner in Santa Barbara who offered them the chance to open for glam rockers Pretty Boy Floyd. The band was ecstatic thinking that Pretty Boy Floyd would draw a lot of females to the show. For that particular show the band came up with their permanent monicker ‘ugly kid joe.’ Eichstadt would recall to Spin “I said, let’s go with something dumb like ugly kid joe, you know opening for pretty boy floyd. Everybody kinda chuckled and we were like ‘yeah it’d look pretty funny on the marquee and we could like give a dollar off for ugly chicks or something.” Unfortunately the gig got cancelled, but Eichstadt had already drawn the band’s logo - the kid he envisioned ugly kid joe to be. Eichstadt ended up taking his drawing to a local santa barbara artist Moish Brenman who worked at a local Santa Barbara skate shop. The band would pay him 14 dollars to draw the logo and paid him in snacks as well including a mountain dew, a candy bar and a bag of doritos according to spin magazine. . Crane would tell Spin “the ugly kid joe character is a precise amalgamation of each member of the band.’
The band soon recorded a demo and the tide shifted in their favour and they soon were playing to crowds of hundreds of people. The band by their own admission had no dreams of signing a record deal, instead hoping that the local radio would just play their music.
Their demo to a local DJ named Will Carlin who then passed it onto an entertainment lawyer who became the band’s manager. That demo tape soon l

Man Ugly Kid Joe is one of my All Time Favorite Bands!! Whiplash liquor pays tribute to their former band name in the lyrics...Suburban, White, Alcoholic Trash! Sweet Leaf cover is amazing, showing love to Ozzy! God Damn Devil, Tomorrow's World, Madman, Panhandling Prince all just blew me away!! My band still plays Everything about you, simply because it's so recognized to this day but if I had it my way I'd play something else from their incredible catalog. I have so much respect for what they did musically!!

The old Drummer Mark Davis is from my old town. His Nephew was the singer in my old band, so we got to hang out with those guys back in the day. The only one I knew though was mark. I have a Marshall Cab that used to belong to Klaus. They had some great songs.

I remember "Everything About You" on Headbangers Ball (way back not only when MTV actually played videos, but also played metal - late 80s/early 90s.) Name was a parody of another one called "Pretty Boy Floyd." They were cool.

Here in the UK they were a one hit wonder group and pretty much considered a novelty act, they still are.

One hit is better than none. Not my favorite band by far, but they were one of those bands that put on a great show. I was surprised how good they were when I saw them in the 90s, having only heard the one song.

Reminds me of the “explicit lyrics “ label that was on many CDs back then. The irony is the label just helped sell cds.

Absolute great channel. You obviously know what you’re doing, I am curious to your reasoning on not playing like a three second clips on the jams you’re focusing on ? A couple of these songs like the ones you were listing when you were doing Cinderella I had to go to KZread and google the song to remember.

Seem to recall shooting a game of pool with the guitar player in Austin back in the late 1990's one night and chatting about the band for a while. Cool guy.

Loved them in the day, saw them in 2015 in Camden where they were fun, self deprecating and played a gret set. Still a fan.

What happened to UKJ was that they arrived too soon in 1991. Hair metal was dying, but it wasn't quite dead yet. Their arrival while that genre was still going caused them to be lumped into it even though their sound was different, and they then died with it. Had they arrived in 93-94 they would've had much more staying power.

When I saw them in Roseville, MI in 1995, Whit pulled a guy out the crowd, handed him the mic, whispered the song in his ear, and let the guy sing it. Knew then, he had grown tired of "Everything About You".

Have a listen to America's Least Wanted and just appreciative the creative rhythm guitar riffs, the amazing emotive guitar solos, the funky bass, complex drumming and the inventive compositions. Crane's voice is awesome. The thing that held them back in my opinion was the one too many cheeseball lyrics. Underrated band that could have developed into something great. Thanks for the video.
