Discover the fascinating story of Life of Agony, a band whose roots trace back to the hardcore scene but evolved into a unique blend of alternative metal. Formed in 1989, the band's early years were marked by personal struggles and musical experimentation, culminating in their debut album "River Runs Red" in 1993, a groundbreaking conceptual narrative touching on theme of personal suffering.
Despite facing challenges and lineup changes over the years, including the departure of original vocalist Keith Caputo, the band continued to push boundaries and explore new musical territories with albums like "Ugly" and "Soul Searching Sun." In 2003, they embarked on a series of reunion shows and eventually released their fourth album, "Broken Valley," in 2005.
The band's journey took a significant turn in 2011 when Caputo came out as transgender, transitioning to Mina Caputo. This momentous event brought both personal and professional changes for the band, yet they persevered, releasing albums like "A Place Where There's No More Pain" in 2017 and "The Sound of Scars" in 2019, the latter serving as a sequel to their iconic debut.
With a rich history spanning over three decades, Life of Agony remains a powerful force in the alternative metal scene, continuing to create music that resonates with audiences worldwide. Stay tuned as they embark on new musical endeavors and celebrate milestones like the 30th anniversary of "River Runs Red" with commemorative tours and documentaries. O.O They have a new drummer!?!? I got to see them in Manchester, NH in the mid-2000s…like a decade after I started listening. I was so over the moon, but I’m extremely loud and stopped the show for a moment so Mina could tell me I was loud. I apologized. She thanked me. I desperately wanted to hug her and thank her for existing. These folks and her voice saved my life time and time and time again as a teen. I am glad I got to leave with a largely memorable moment. I’m not much of a fangirl, but I mean…I’ve been listening to them since I was 14 or so, so I absolutely fangirl for LoA. Mina is just a stellar human. Over the years, I’ve kept an eye on her, had a couple of exchanges with her, and I’ve been impressed by her at every pass.

Agony was my soundtrack in high school. Growing up in a suburb of Boston I would see them at least ten times a year between Boston, providence, Worcester and Hartford in the years 92-95. The transgender thing never bothered me but honestly his voice was never the same.

The first time I heard his style and creativity especially the subtle differences from Type O’s SDAH to OOTF is awesome and that breakdown in TOO LATE FROZEN blew my mind as a 15 year old drummer. Where I absolutely love their "river runs red" album from start to finish, it's definitely in my top 10 albums of all time. But other than a couple of songs here and there over the years I can't say that I’ve ever really go into any of their other albums. I can't really say why, even with some of their more recent albums where they went back to having more of a "river runs red" sound but they just didn't grab me even I was hoping they would. I can't think of another band that I would consider one of my all time favorites but when taking out that one album they're no longer even on the list.

Maybe I'm old? RRR was a great album. Saw them live a few times arouund 95/96. As a lifelong fan of hardcore I must say that the most energetic show I ever attended was Warzone. Raybeez was in the crowd dancing when the band started playing. Not uncommon but this cat was wearing some bib overalls and some leather work mule gloves, this shit was hardcore for real!

In 83 at 14 wearing a biker hat like Rob Halford me brother in-law 13 yrs elder asked if I was gay. I was like WTF!!! Why would you ask that? He said that’s what the gay bikers from London accessorized with, along with the leather & spikes. I grabbed a Judas Priest album & said this is fuckin metal & im dating a hot blonde girl. So I put 2 & 2 together with lyrics & stage performances to realize the Metal God was gay. So fucking what!!! He’s a great artist whom I luv & respect 💯%. He’s not a predator nor is he pushing it on anyone. Luv is so much easier than hate.

That's the key right there -"not pushing it on anyone". When I was 18, I worked for a company whose owner was bi and lived with 3 of the most flamboyant, stereotypical gay men you'd ever see. The shop was in the basement of their house, so I was around them alot. They knew I was straight and not once did they ever say or do anything that was crossing the line. Total respect on both sides. and smashed the stereotypes that I was brought up with. But the current LGBTQ agenda of cramming it down everyone throats at every turn has probably made more people intolerant than accepting. You see it with hyper religious people as well. I have my own beliefs and things that I support, but I'm not on a mission to convert people to my way of thinking because it's what works for me or tell them they're wrong because they don't see things through my eyes. Don't know why that's such a hard thing for some to grasp.

Early band to be from New York to sing and not yell. Most heavy bands didn’t sing, only the emerging grunge bands did. Unique group to have a New York style without being actual NYHC or thrash metal. It’s hard to write the pronunciation but it’s La- MOUR . The strong accent is on the MOUR. Not a strong accent on the “LA” . It sounds almost like two words as opposed to one
