Udonis Haslem On His Off-Season Heat Meeting, Talking Trash, and Heat Culture

Спорт

During last year’s Summer League, a classic episode of The Long Shot was recorded with Udonis Haslem. So it’s only right that he joins the guys again for the reunion.
He talks about his off-season meeting with Heat staff, his future in Miami and what he still has to offer, his diet, and getting “brainwashed” by Heat culture.
The guys also talk gambling, Mario Kart, and how UD’s “antenna” still goes up in certain situations.

    Greatest podcast yet. If Udonis isn’t going to be the next coach for the Miami heat, what position is he going to take? Are they going to make up some role for him and keep him on a player salary? I’m really curious where they take this next.( notes: Miami is developing undrafted talent to fill key “role players” around allstar players)

    9:00 So just a heads up - if you double your bet every time you lose at blackjack, you either go broke by losing a bunch of hands in a row (and it doesn't take as many as you might think, even on NBA money) or you quit when you're up a little bit. In the long, long run, doubling your bet whenever you lose is basically the statement "my bankroll is bigger than the house's", which is pretty risky even with a $90 million contract. _For those who don't know, the strategy Duncan is talking about at __9:00__ is that you bet some relatively small amount on a hand of blackjack, and if you lose the hand, you double the bet and go again. You're effectively doing a "double or nothing" every time you lose, so you just double or nothing until you win then go back to betting small. Repeat until bored._ Let's say you're betting $100 (I'm NBA players bet more, but I really have no idea what NBA players do with their absurd money; Duncan was just talking about how wearing a Rolex and driving a Tesla is basically the bare minimum, so I have no frame of reference). The bet-doubling strategy means every win nets you $100 and losses get wiped out unless you go bankrupt. So in a few hours you're very likely to be up a few thousand dollars, which is great except for the fact that you play in the NBA and don't need the money, like, at all. You already drive a Tesla and wear a Rolex. Doubling your bet after every loss, however, does come with a downside: you leave open the possibility that you get incredibly unlucky and go bankrupt. Repeatedly doubling your losses adds up _fast._ If you're betting $100 and you lose 4 hands in a row you're down $1,500. No problem for a high roller like you. You lose 4 more in a row and you're down $25,500. Pocket change! You lose 4 more in a row and you're down $409,500. That's starting to look like actual money. 4 more and you're down $6,553,500. That's...maybe a problem. Lose the next hand - which is worth $6,553,600, if the casino will even entertain such a bet - and you might just be out of money, period. If you're a _real_ high roller maybe it takes a couple more losses, but not many. The odds of this happening are quite small (about 0.0016% if we treat each hand as a coin flip, which isn't quite right but is close enough for this example) but not zero, while your upside is not much and your downside is catastrophic. And if you ever chicken out after, say, 10 lost hands in a row, your lifetime gains from this strategy will be entirely wiped out. If you do like Duncan does and set a loss limit (always a good idea when gambling), it's quite likely that you'll eventually just lose a few in a row, hit your limit and bust out. I've never understood the emotional appeal of this strategy. All the big hands are you hitting a coin flip to avoid disaster (or not...), while you try to nickel and dime the casino to death. Where's the fun in that? Why gamble when all the big exciting stuff is you maybe getting destroyed but never you winning a truckload of money? I'm not a gambler so maybe I just don't get it, but to me the tiny dopamine hits you get from winning $100 and feeling smart aren't worth it. Maybe you think you're outsmarting the casino by having a working knowledge of precalculus, and that's worth...something, I guess? If you want to have actual fun gambling, play roulette or craps or something exciting (the expected value on those games is generally around the same as blackjack _(craps is a little better, roulette is a little worse)_ but you can get a big win, call it a day, and hit the buffet and a show feeling great. There are no big wins with the bet-doubling blackjack strategy, just a million tiny wins and the occasional catastrophic loss. Don't try to nickel and dime a casino to death when you could be having fun. Also: I love when you have Udonis on, he's great. He's full of wisdom, speaks his mind honestly, and seems like a cool dude.

  • @jgray2718

    @jgray2718

    2 жыл бұрын

    The bet-doubling strategy relies on the fact that every successive term in the series 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + ... is 1 more than the combined sum of all the previous terms. If you're willing to go double or nothing after every loss, you're essentially challenging the casino to a bankroll-measuring contest every time you lose a hand, and if it gets extreme enough, you're basically saying the casino will bust before you do. The problem is that you can't actually bust the casino because your many, many wins are all small and their one win is huge. You're better off just putting your money in a money market account and earning interest. It'd probably be more fun, too. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is don't do the bet-doubling strategy. And Duncan, if by some miracle you read this, you're gambling correctly by having a loss limit and stopping when you hit it. Keep doing that. You might try stopping when you're up some of the time, though.

    valid point all the way. might i just add that when the player wins via blackjack he gains 2.5 of his bet so it's not merely your base bet that you win EVERYTIME. and if you do happen to blackjack when you are far into your doubling, you gain a lot.

    UD the Nick Collison of the East. Old respected vet who's been on one team his whole career. I expect that he's not an assistant coach (yet) because he can still knock around those young dudes in practice and toughen them up. I'm sure that's part of his value, as the Heat are the hardest playing, borderline dirty team in the NBA. I say this as a Sixers fan who despises the Heat, but like Embiid, I knew that the Sixers needed some of that nastiness on our team ... so we straight up stole PJ Tucker from 'em!

    All Morey gotta do is get back the Houston guys that worked well for him and can play with Embiid. Timberwolves and Cavs are developing their Twin Towers. But Tucker is probably the best glue guy who can work with that group. He won a chip with the Bucks playing that key big man role.

    UD is a smart man. I always say "We should all be selfless but to be truly selfless, you must be selfish first.". How can you be selfless if you are not showing people the best version of yourself, that you can be? You can't, so you have to look after yourself first & that is (sadly) considered inherently selfish. I am awful at taking my own advice, I am not a smart man.
