Small correction here, Tyson in this fight was already WBC champ by beating Berbick previously. This fight was Tyson WBC champ vs Smith WBA champ. Tyson retained WBC and became new WBA champ.

I met Bonecrusher in a Dr. Office in Jacksonville, NC. I was the only person in the crowded waiting room that recognized him. Super nice guy.

James "Bonecrusher" Smith is one of the first (if not the first) college educated boxers. He graduated from Fayetteville State University and worked part-time at the Ford dealership in the mid-eighties. He was a regular visitor to the radio station where I worked. The man is a gentle giant with crazy eyes and a handshake like the jaws of life. He is one of the few to finish a fight against Iron Mike.

@davidalbright7335 with all due respect to this courageous boxer, I found he was slow, especially his jab and he missed so many times, or is it me? 12 full rounds against Mike is quite a performance though.

@@hellochannel6344 He is 6ft 4in. and by any standard a large man. Super heavyweights are not spry and crisp. For his size, he was fast. Like Mike, you wouldn't want to get hit by him.

Have to hand it to the Bonechrusher, that guy is one tough dude......i would hope Mills Lane warned Mike about leading with his head, it was very apparent every time Mike closed in, i would not say Mike did it on purpose, it's just his style to swarm in for close fighting where he is most effective, and the difference in height was part of the issue, but a caution would have been warranted.

Smith was an excellent tough fighter. He held Tyson, but that is just good technique. He withstood prime time Tyson’s heat. That was a rarity at that stage in Tyson’s career where he was destroying everybody. Smith fought him well, but was too defensive to win. At some point, he should have stepped up his offense. Not many could last the whole fight with Tyson as Smith did. He had to fight a cautious fight. No choice.

@@34rdiaz have you ever met Mike Tyson in person? He's a little shrimp. He does not have the reach. He does not have Lennox Lewis power. I don't care what they say. Mike Tyson always had trouble fighting larger fighters that had skill ones that didn't have skill that had extreme skills. Fighters like Holyfield and Lewis would always beat TYSON. look at JAMES Buster Douglas. Don't give me the crap this is not prime Mike that's always an excuse. What about bone crusher who gave him all he could handle?

except Tyson always tries to get in close to get that uppercut in. At a distance he would have shorter reach than bonecrusher.
