When Manny became Lennox' trainer, a whole new Lennox emerged. He became a much better tactician, and his punches were harder and thrown like a real pro. Manny did the same for the Klitschkos. One of the true great trainers.

Never liked him much at the time but your exactly right. Lewis was one of if not the most naturally gifted athletes in the sport of boxing. A extremely intelligent and precise boxer, rarely ever saw him off his game. As a kid I used to say he looked like a woman if he had makeup on. Lol, stupid I know. Luckily I learned to respect a man if he's legit rather than sling hate and misjudge someone I've never even met.

Tyson took Biggs heart and soul, he was a shell of his former self (which was rather unspectacular to begin with) at this point.

UK fighters hadn't been a dominant force in boxing for decades. And Biggs had already beaten Lewis at this point. There was no reason to Lewis as anything other than an underdog before the fight began.

Lewis comes across as an easy going guy on TV but he was a mean fighter, especially in the early days, look at this fight and the Ruddock bout. He had a very tough fight with Bruno in my opinion but when he caught Bruno and shook him, well he piled on the pressure and finished it in style.

Biggs actually beat Lewis s in the Olympics and went on to win gold. Lewis stayed in the amateurs another 4 years and won his gold over Bowe in the 88 Olympics

All of you bashing Merchant... he can say foolish things at times, but he could also be a very amusing, clever, and intelligent commentator/analyst at times as well. He’s an exceptionally unique and classic personality in boxing broadcast history, one of the best ever in that regard... his very, very dry, old-man-like delivery is original and unmistakeable, and it really works for what he does. Merchant is this bumbling old man you only half pay attention to until he suddenly drops a bomb of sly wit or clever insight or deep wisdom that makes you grin and think “this old man’s really with it after all”. Merchant at his best is slick and intelligent... and the best is when he waits for that little pause in the broadcast commentary and then drops a quotable, like the famous “death by a thousand left hands”, and many, many others. Merchant was practically a quotable machine

@@djrondo1224 Of all the guys u mentioned, I know of Bowe ducking Lewis. That one was for all to see, Bowe threw his championship belt in the bin in press conference rather than fight Lewis. I'm not so sure if Lewis and Holyfield actually WAITED for Tyson to come out of prison (implying that they ducked him before). I have never heard of a formal challenge for a fight between them which had been turned down. We must accept that Mike Tyson's imprisonment disturbed his career & a lot of potential fights, even with boxers u mentioned. U even admit later in your comment that Holyfield never ducked anyone. Only Bowe ever ducked a fight in that generation of boxers.

@@skeelo6219 Well let’s just say Lewis did not want to fight Bowe until a little later in his career after he started working with Emmanuel Stewart so maybe Bowe was returning the favor. And you are right no contract or anything formal for Lewis or Holyfield before Tyson went to prison but everyone got in line after when they saw he was not quite the same Iron Mike. And ya Holyfield fought Bowe 3x and Tyson 2 and everyone else Foreman, Lewis, Moore etc..

I don't think he would not have fought any, if not all of the said boxers, had he not been imprisoned. As for Bowe maybe 'getting back on Lewis' by not agreeing to fight him (Lewis) and sacrificing his World Championship Belt just to prove a point to Lewis?? That would be major pettiness, don't u think? I tend to believe another view. I think Bowe knew what was in store for him should he go ahead with the fight and he chose to 'excuse himself' .

@@skeelo6219 I think Bowe beats Lewis up until 1995. Once Lewis started working with Emanuel Steward then I put my money on Lewis. Bowe was a better fighter early in pro career. Lewis had bad footwork and struggled vs fighters who,could jab and Bowe was as big with a better jab. Bowe at that time was also much better on the inside. Lewis takes a trilogy 2-1. Also Tyson was never got on the level he was on before being imprisoned.

Lennox was a force

Not to take anything away from Lewis. He did a good job overwhelming Biggs. I think most comments start with Biggs is not because he is an American and Lewis is a Brit. This guy Biggs had a lot of potential, that for some reason was not actualized. When I watched him fight Tyson, I thought it was too early for him to go for Tyson. He needed more before taking on a guy like Tyson. It was a mistake too risky. I think most people wish that Biggs stayed in the game again because of the perceived potential. I have read one comment that Biggs was drinking too much another said he was damaged by Tyson. Whatever the explanation may be his career did not pick up as most of us hoped. I wish him well, I liked the guy.

Lewis got better with age. He did look a bit clumsy in some of his earlier fights, but that can be put down to fighting styles. Most boxers were scared of Tyson, but I don’t think Lewis would have been, even early in his career.

But clearly Lewis evolved and matured as a boxer to surpass Biggs and in parallel Biggs had declined at this point due to a failed pro career at the elite level. The result was a mismatch between the young, hungry, on-point, prime Lennox Lewis and a past-prime Biggs who was gradually “on his way out”

Lewis was the perfect example of what I call a hybrid : a cross between a boxer and a puncher. They can knock opponents out with one solid punch but they can also box technically and land a lot of punches in critical areas. And because they hit so hard, all those hits really tear down their opponents. Larry Merchant called it search & destroy. The greatest thing about hybrids is that they can outbox punchers and outpunch boxers. That's why a peak 6"5 Lennox Lewis could have beaten anybody, Riddick Bowe included.

I'm glad I came across this. Lennox wasnt a hybrid fighter. Lennox used his height and reach to his advantage, realized that he was a better boxer than puncher and leaned on that. Then he sat and studied opponents before facing them, not to mention picking up a better trainer. All these things carried him, lennox is not a talented puncher at all, athletically, he was never really the underdog fighter, had an issue with Tyrell biggs here when tyson didn't. Literally the biggest example of taking advantage of the times.

I suspect the ultimate example of a ‘hybrid fighter’ is Tommy Hearns. A devastating puncher with great boxing skills. A much more fluid fighter than Lewis with great speed of punch and punch variation. Ironically from the same Kronk / Manny Steward camp

I think unlike what was shown in this video, Lewis is almost a close 6 foot 5=inch guy, Tyrell Biggs is probably half an inch taller around 6 foot 5.5inches or perhaps a shade more. Lewis looked huge in the later part of his career because he grew into size - from 230.5 pounds in this fight all the way to nearly 248 and then 258 in his last fight. The 18 pounds increase in weight makes an already tall fighter look huger. It also helps that even today barring 3-4, not much heavyweights are over 6 foot 6 (Zhang, Joyce, Makhmudev, Fury and Wilder come to mind).

How can this be the 1st heavyweight fight between two gold medalists since 1973? When Foreman and Frazier fought twice, 1973 was the 1st fight.. This would be the 1st heavyweight fight between 2 hold medalists since the 2nd Foreman-Frazier fight

Tyrell added punching while keeping range smoothly. Punching quick mid-range, then using a shoulder to block with a semi-Philly shell Able to punch to the body fast from a counter left to right quick Able to come in with a quick combo, back up, get punches landed on, then return smoothly. Sure, why not? James Tillis nearly did, and Biggs had some similarities of style and attributes to Tillis... height, reach, speed, crafty pure boxer style. In fact, Biggs was even taller than Tillis, and was heralded as an even more talented boxer, because he was an Olympic gold medalist and highly decorated amateur. Biggs was a truly phenomenal talent with a wealth of amateur experience, but he fell apart and declined rapidly as a pro due to his addiction problems and lifestyle and lack of commitment to training seriously. He always tries to say something profound and clever rather than just calling the action... I remember the Tyson fight he tried this tortured metaphor "the crowd was her to see Godzilla and the wrong guy ended up being Godzilla before that knockdown"

Actually that fight was one of his best, simply because he was so shocked by what was happening he had few canned observations. He had one of his best calls in the 8th round when Douglas suddenly came on... Lampley was babbling about something when Douglas landed a devastating combination that drove Tyson into the ropes and Merchant blurted out "MIKE IS HURT!!!!" with pure shock and astonishment. I'll never forget that moment

You’re clueless. Larry Merchant is one of the greatest and most unique commentators of all time. The sly, clever, slow-talking old man with the driest sense of humor who fumbles with his words but then suddenly drops bombs of comedic wit or brilliant insight out of nowhere, not to mention quotables galore

I think Biggs management was a lot of his downfall, I mean he just fought Riddick Bowe a couple months before this fight and obviously Biggs drug problem from the past did a toll on him, Biggs had a great jab and had skills but he needed a trainer like Teddy Atlas or Emanuel Steward and did not take huge fights right back to back.

Typical American commentary!!! Put the Brit down!!!... even when he looks impressive and good prospect for the future!! .. well Lewis had the last laugh,....didn't he!!😉👍

Michael Aiston has little to do with US vs Brit commentators. The same commentators leveled the same criticisms against a young Tyson and a young Bowe.

It's disgraceful the disdain the American commentators showed towards Lewis. Especially the comment about him wanting to fight bums. The yanks never really respected him I think.

They didn’t say that. They said his *managers* only want him to fight bums (at this very early point of his career). Of course that all changed around the time of this fight. That narrative already should’ve been laid to rest by the fact that he had just taken a big step-up in competition fighting Biggs. But you know how it is. Every boxer gets doubted a bit UNTIL they consistently fight and beat elite guys, which was what Lennox had began doing from this point forward

I don’t even know why they bother to mention the pros amateur and especially Olympic records, because they’ve almost always become a completely different fighter by then! And Biggs is a perfect example of this fact!

No one could live with him.

Lennox Lewis at this stage of his career already looks very well-rounded, lethal and savvy: He has a great jab and utilizes very strong looping/straight counter-punches, very effectively and deftly. He has a good arsenal of very powerful -though quasi-telegraphed- punches in close range, especially that overhead right smash and the uppercut. I however, don't like the fact that he's often not active enough in letting his fists fly and I hate the fact -whether he can get away with it or not- that he feels the need or desire to tie his opponents up so often, which I feel is a form of 'cheating' that even the great Muhammad Ali utilized far too often, also, and got away with it. If I was fighting Lewis, and I won the fight -- I wouldn't offer him a rematch simply because of how often Lewis ties his opponent up like Ali did. That would be incredibly annoying to me as a fighter. I would never tie an opponent up, if I could help it, except in rare circumstances -as tying someone up shows a flaw in my confidence and/or fighting abilities...

It's all about technique & champion mentality. It has nothing to do with muscles. You can be a champion and a 18 year boy can KO you out there. Lewis was fast & got precision.

True, although the current era we’re in now is pretty good, just not quite to the level of some of the great Golden Age eras of the past. We do have at least two great heavyweights now in Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, and a number of other formidable fighters at the elite level, such as Deontay Wilder, Dillian Whyte, Oleksandr Usyk, Joseph Parker, Andy Ruiz Jr, Dereck Chisora, etc... and the talented upcoming Jared Anderson, who’s very early in his career, but is likely on-track to become the next great long-awaited American HW champ

Why does it seem as though nobody knows what a shovel hook is? I mean, technically there are only 4 categories of punches, straight punches, hooks, shovel hooks and uppercuts, the rest of them are all variations of those... so why is it that people can't remember just 4 different kinds of punches? Why are shovel hooks always left out? They are very distinct by their angle and power and are some of the best short-ranged weapons a boxer has. Lennox Lewis uses them very effectively, and they are NOT uppercuts!!

Raid Unhinged the four main punches in boxing are universally recognized as jab, hook, uppercut and cross.

Biggs just wasn’t a great puncher. And being so big he was an easy target for the better heavyweights.

Well I remember when Biggs was a big name yeah 18-5 ain’t bad by no means.

Lewis looks terrific in this fight. As for Biggs you can see flashes of the skills that made him a top amateur. Not enough for the pro game though. Lewis showed him the door and rather rudely too.

Biggs was definitely skillful and probably should have been a World Heavyweight Champion or at the very least a contender. 6ft 5, great jab, really good on his feet, decent right cross etc. Years of snorting cocaine, alcoholism and leading a bad lifestyle takes its toll on a man and you can see it here with Briggs. Just couldn't fight with any degree of intensity after a couple of rounds. Totally spent.

Post _Tyson Biggs was a shadow of his former self. Tyson who showed up in the Biggs fight was a force of destruction. He would have destroyed Holyfield, Bowe and even Lennox Lewis.
