Tyra Banks and ANTM EXPOSED... more problematic than you think!

After posting my video on Tyra Banks' MLM makeup line, a lot of you requested a follow-up video on some other shady things Tyra Banks has done. Lately there's been some controversy over problematic clips that have resurfaced from ANTM, but I wanted to share even more information I've been collecting over the past few weeks. After diving into more research, I uncovered some problematic things Tyra has done and is currently doing that showcase her hypocrisies and desperate attempts to boost her businesses, and make a profit at the expense of the young women who look up to her and who she claims she "empowers". Now, this may sound harsh but with Tyra's extensive track record I showcase in this video it's coming from a place of quality research, evidence and "receipts".
This video is not intended to solely bash on Tyra, but to raise awareness of the issues that we have long ignored or brushed aside. Tyra is an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, a startup investor and founder and a black woman who has made a successful name for herself. All of this is wonderful, but as said in the video I wish all of the "good stuff" didn't come with all the "bad stuff" Tyra has done, and I hope women and role models of the future embody Tyra's great qualities while lifting others up instead of putting them down.

**warning: potential epilepsy trigger at around 34 min from Modelland promo video** This issue is particularly important to me because of my background as a model. I do want to clarify everything that has happened in the course of ANTM isn’t entirely Tyra’s fault, but I do think she has accountability there because she is the face of the show, and the show didn’t only represent her and her brand, but for a lot of people represented the modeling world as well. Also, I didn’t see this at the time of recording and editing but Tyra has reacted to some of the most recent controversy which Buzzfeed covers in an article- I included this in my description if you’d like to see her as well as others’ reactions to the controversies!

    2 жыл бұрын

@@carmelmulroy6459 it was just so rich and ironic. Like, I don’t know a ton about any of the judges, but from what I know about Tyra, she’s a mixed American, like myself (half black and white), who’s maybe looked at documentaries about Africa or maybe even visited but never actually lived a full life there. That woman was beautiful and that’s the only reason they felt the need to tear her down. I can’t help but think about colorism here. I don’t understand or support this thought process, but for whatever reason, black women of different shades often almost try to compete with each other. Like, one thinks they’re prettier and better because they’re light skinned and the other thinks she’s the fucking shit because she’s got beautiful dark skin. I’ve personally experienced this where a darker woman will say things to me like “you’re barely even black,” “you’re not black,” and straight up things like “dark skins are way prettier,” “you’re not like us/ one of us” and it’s irritating seeing as we both face pretty much the exact same prejudices, stereotypes, and ethnic background. So, when I see stuff like this it genuinely makes me upset. I’m not saying treat all black people great because they’re black, I’m saying, maybe treat them fairly and not how you’ve been treated so many times; there’s no reason to keep the cycle going

@@jenmadkins you're mostly right, but light skinned black women do not face the same amount of prejudice as dark-skinned women. If you can pass as white, you generally get off way easier and are less likely to be profiled as "loud, agressive, mean, ghetto," etc. Light skinned women also tend to land larger roles in films, even for movies where a majority of the cast is black. Its interesting to see the pattern where you'll have a dark-skinned man and a light-skinned woman with light skinned daughters and dark-skinned sons.

And one day, we were having an endurance test and I passed out from standing too long and they were like "Why didn't you say anything?" Like, how could I? If I moved without being ordered to, I'd get reprimanded. If I spoke without being spoken to, I'd get reprimanded. And I thought I just needed to push through the discomfort. It's just really awful to drill into someone to follow orders and then criticize them for not taking initiative. These models went through hell.

Tyra is a misogynist with views steeped in colorism, and I truly believed that she felt like she suffered as a model and so she wanted others to suffer and feel humiliated. She thought she was exposing how the industry truly is, and it probably was a cruel place to be, but really she just exposed that she was on a power trip. She made sure to make sure at least once every person on that show felt small, and that doesn't make her someone who empowers women at all.

Before they turned the cameras on they primed us by saying that they were looking for drama. “We want to hear you say ‘I’m a total diva and no other girl will get in my way’ or ‘if a b*tch crosses me I’ll steal & cut up her panties’” (FOR REAL) then they turned on the camera and recorded each of us ~40 girls, one by one, basically one upping each other to be the villain... thank god I didn’t get on the show and went my own way instead. So when the veil gets lifted and you realize it’s just a tv show and they’re using people’s features and downfalls to get ratings (and not pay them adequately) then it looks extra gross. Again, like all reality tv shows.

lol Tiffany. Tiffany FAILED the psych exam 3 times with 3 different psychologists in cycle 3. She, Tyra and others were invested in her and made an effort to get Tiffany counselling (something that has stayed with her, becoming a youth couselling to troubled teens herself) so that she could come back for cycle 4. She was the ONLY GIRL who made Tyra and the judges cry in the audition. They were literally rooting for her from the get go. Besides exploiting her story for drama and tears for reality tv, they repeatedly state how she could work in this industry, they genuinely believed in her. The run-up to the meme, was alongside the debut of Tyra's talk show. If Ken Mok is to be believed, they were all on over 24 hours without sleep. For Tyra, she wanted to give Tiffany the contract and the 100k to lift her out of the situation she was in, evidenced by their 1 on 1s. From their perspective, it was seeing someone be ungrateful, and throwing away an opportunity they all thought she desperately wanted, rejection impulse like Marjorie cycle 11. She cried to get on the show multiple times. She cried and collapsed onto the ground when she finally got in. She didn't cry when she got the boot. In Tiffany's defense, "Tyra cared about me, it's good to know that she cared. I love you," also Tiffany, "my grandma said, if you love somebody, you dont embarrass them like that." Spin that however you like.

Oh my goodness Tyra used to be such a role model for so many of us growing up, especially black girls. She's the main reason I got into model. But even though I was very young when I used to watch her shows, there would be so many moments, when my not yet fully developed brain would just pause and just sit and reflect on what the hell am I watching. I remember watching her on her day time show, she had an episode dedicated to natural hair, I was so excited to see Tyra's natural hairs... you know representation. And sis come out from the back with full on make up and a wet hair nicely trimmed look, and said "I just got out of the shower"... my 12 year old brain was so confused, like is this a scam. I mean her entire audience was showing some kinks and afro... Sis didn't understand the assignment. It was so disappointing. 😅

The photo shoot at the cemetery was so unnecessary: in the final photos, we don’t see the hole, the graveyard or a tombstone. Just a model in a coffin photographed from above. This could have been done in a studio. And the fashion show in the bubbles on water: you couldn’t even see the clothes!!! How stupid! All the drama they created to put contestants in miserable situations. This is just one of the dozens of contradictions we saw on that show. The objective was to “empower women” but they never missed an occasion to crush them. Express yourself but don’t reply to the judges, that’s arrogant Be a plus size model but stop eating, you’re getting too fat. Be you but let’s get rid of this part of your body because it doesn’t sell. Be sexy but be modest. Be modest but be sexy. Be feminine but here’s a boyish haircut. Be assertive but don’t even think of saying that you’re uncomfortable on a set. Be professional but accept unconditionally to be rejected by a racist male model because that’s “part of the business”. Embrace all people but let a few girls bully a transgendered woman or an autistic girl without giving them the right to defend themselves. Ask an African American girl to embrace her culture but blame her for being too ethnic.
