The Beauty "Community" isn't a Community... it's an Industry.

In light of recent controversies I wanted to talk about something that has been on my mind for a while- the "beauty community", beauty influencers and how brands use beauty influncers to reach massive profits. It seems there is a lot of manipulation going on here, and a lot of encouragement of excessive consumerism. I think it has had detrimental effects on (mainly our bank accounts) and has turned a community once built around feeling confident and "playing with makeup" into an industry of drama, profits, and competition.

It's in a different form now. I'm not sure if you're old enough to remember the hummer come out. That was like a huge time for conspicuous consumption. People who never left the freeway were driving them.... And those things were getting 9 miles/gal. This was also around the birth of electric cars & alternative fuel. So we all knew better than an SUV like that for freeway driving.

I wear enough makeup for a drag queen, but let's be honest - how many eyeshadow pallets does one really need? None of this overconsumption is sustainable; consumerism is *so* ugly. Those unboxings are harmful. What happens is that kids get a hit of adrenaline and endorphins at seeing what's in the box, and it becomes literally addicting. When they don't get that hit when playing with what they own, but do when they see what's new, they'll gravitate toward what gives that adrenaline and endorphins. For this reason, I never let my daughter watch more than the occasional unboxing, and explained to her why. When she was seven, she did understand (adults are dumbass idiots--kids truly understand more than we give them credit for because they're a lot smarter than we adults are quite often), and she understood how they were manipulating her. She's 10 now, and damn, she is GOOD at detecting when influencers and others on KZread are trying to manipulate her, and she'll rail for an hour about exploitation. She hates Ryan's parents. She doesn't watch his videos, but she will rant about how his parents are using him.

I’m pretty sure most people have this issue. Within each palette there will be colors that do not fit your skin tone. I’m fair skinned, so 90% of them don’t go with my skin tone. Medium skinned people are the only ones that benefit the most from it, even darker toned people. I see 2 fair shades of foundation at the store and when I counted it was 15 dark shades. FIFTEEN!! That’s ridiculous!! If they’re going to make that amount of variety shades for medium-dark skinned people, they need to do the same thing for us fair-light skinned people.

The sourcing of minerals is downright evil. Vice has put out some good documentaries about some of the mining done in other countries like mica is dug up mostly by children in unstable dirt tunnels. Just seeing it on tv gave me anxiety, it's far worse than any horror movies. People should really research the brands they use. There is a brand for everyone but finding it can be hard for sure but that doesn't mean you need to settle, if looking pretty means others suffer than is it really worth it? Back when she was getting hate from Trisha Paytas about the "white elephant" game and the iPad, I of course felt the need to defend Laura bc she was someone who could afford 100 ipads.. why would she need yet another? She literally gave it to a subscriber that needed it for college, a single mom. Why she gets hate for that blows my mind. Anyway.. I've always been a fan of her, make a point to always make positive comments over time on her socials and she notices those things. She randomly DM'd me asking for my address for "goodies" and thanked me for the support. 5 days later I had a box that added up to over 1,200.00 in high end products. Tart, MAC, PUR, milk makeup, items from her own brand, Nars.. tons. She never makes these things public.. I wish everyone really knew how wonderful that woman truly is.

I wanted to buy the conspiracy palette when it launched, but it sold out, and seeing everything more detailed, I realized I wouldn't use half of the colors of that palette, so why would I buy it??? I barely use eyeshadow (I have one palette with pretty natural colors), I use lipsticks of any color but I don't feel that comfortable with eyeshadow......and then I realized the only reason why I wanted to buy it, was because I found the "docuseries" interesting (it was a good ad)

I've never watched the docu series so I was super surprised with the popularity of that palette. It was quite ugly with the shade selection and overall look so it was baffling to me. I like when makeup is neat and pretty so Shane Dawson's aesthetic does not fit into that idea for me. Also I've never bought a palette that expensive so I would not even consider it lmao.

It can be normal to buy something before finishing something else if you alternate between products . I have six different moisturizers right now that get used on different parts of my face at different times, and they definitely get used up. I ain't spending $60 on an ounce of something to let it go bad. And I have about 20 palettes that all do get used. I don't toss them after 12 months. If kept in a cool place, they'll be fine for much, much longer. They only have those dates to get you to toss products out and buy more. The FDA does NOT require them. www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetics-labeling/shelf-life-and-expiration-dating-cosmetics#:~:text=Does%20FDA%20have%20rules%20for,expiration%20dates%20on%20their%20labels.&text=Manufacturers%20must%20make%20sure%20their,effective%20until%20their%20expiration%20dates.

I only replace things once they're completely gone and I am a performer who wears stage makeup on a regular basis and I wear light makeup daily. I still spend too much on product.

Girl! You’re only ~20 years old?! I put you mid-20s post grad- you’re very insightful, seem very well educated, and you comfortably present important topics. As things in the world around us continue to fall apart (it’s going to get worse) we’re going to need voices with platforms to speak up for those without platforms, and inform (not misinform [something growing more and more common]) audiences. So... I hope you continue to work producing and publishing videos. Five ⭐️s 🦄💜⚛️

My current fave 'influencer' is Angelica Nyqvist. She does anti hauls every month and often talks about why no one needs all these new products and consumerism in general. She also does low buys. The best tip she's taught me that I now use with everything I want to buy that I don't really need is wait a week, if you haven't thought about it you don't really want it, if you can't get it off your mind it's worth looking into purchasing. Really helped me stopped buying things just cos I thought they were pretty and now my makeup collection is no longer overwhelming to the point I end up using a product once and never again because of the amount I need to get through. She is also super honest and mostly features indie brands!

Yes, the waiting a week technique really does work to combat mindless consumption. Sometimes I go a little longer, and wait a few weeks. Things that I purchase after doing that actually get used and I enjoy them a lot more, because I really wanted them. That quick dopamine hit that you get off of ordering something the minuet after you first looked at it, fades so quickly and leaves you feeling empty.

Around 2016-2017 I had the same revelation about the beauty community and the influence they actually had on me as a consumer!! I was buying waaaaay too much, never had room for it, and still have a lot that is probably past the expiration date that I havent even put a dent in. I really had to rethink who I watched and what I bought and when. As much as I love makeup i really had to distance myself from beauty influencers. Now I really try to watch artists/channels that focus on tutorials or makeup looks that fit my aesthetic instead of product pushers.

Given how on fire the beauty community is now, I really love to see you comment on this perspective! I also fell for overspending tons of money on makeup that I hardly used and had to throw because it was expired, all because of influencers. Now I follow a handful of MUAs, not "beauty gurus" but actual professionals, and only have one or two makeup products of each category that I know work for me. Thank you for your video! Amazing work, as usual!

There's a lot I like about Tati, but the gummy trend needs to die. If you want your skin and hair and nails to be better, just get a decent prenatal vitamin. $10 will get you a bottle that'll last a couple months. Folic acid, biotin, and zinc. This is a large part of what give the pregnancy "glow." But because they're called prenatals, a lot of people think you should only take them when pregnant.

@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria I used to like Tati, but unsubbed when she actively promoted J* on her channel. It was the last straw after I gave her excuses for more minor things over the years. People think she's been drama free, but some of us remember how she treated Thrift Thick (Cassie) years ago. Tati held a contest to highlight a smaller channel but due to some issues behind the scenes months went by without a winner. Cassie's followers asked what was going on with the contest while on livestream, and she said she didn't know but maybe ask Tati. No intent behind it, imo, just a shrug and doesn't hurt to ask type of comment made. Supposedly some if Cassie's fans bugged Tati about it, TBH I don't remember if they were even bad about it or not but Cassie still has a small channel so it couldn't have been too many people anyway. Tati proceeded to rip in Cassie by acting like she sicced her fans in her and shamed her because her mom defended her (notice a pattern? She did the same thing to JC.) I let it go at the time because they both apologized, but looking back I wonder if Cassie had anything to apologize for...? On top of that, Tati chose one of her friends as the winner of the contest. I was a big fan of her at the time, so I let that go, too. But looking back the whole thing was sketchy.

@@scler8453 I really, really, REALLY wish these beauty people, ALL of them, would stay the hell out of this stuff. Yes, supplements are real, and that's all the more reason for them to stay out of it. Stuff that can change the way the body functions from the inside out should be left to actual experts. Worse, they've far overcharging for this shit. The stuff that helps hair, skin, and nails are the things in prenatal vitamins, and none of it makes the hair you've already grown thicker. They're stepping into medical territory and charging far, far too much for their names and like gummy vitamins are new. No, they're fucking not new.

I don’t fault the companies for advertising...I think consumers need to take more responsibility for their actions and not be so gullible. “Fear of missing out” is so stupid. The whole point of advertising is convincing people that they need to buy a product. People need to grow up and stop acting like toddlers who want every shiny new thing. “Influencers” aren’t here for you and don’t give a crap about you.

My mom is 53 and has fallen right into the beauty industries hands via influencers. She’s always had more makeup than she needed, but now if you ask her what she wants for her birthday/Christmas/Mother’s Day, it’s always some new palette. She only actually puts on makeup maybe a couple times a week, and rarely a full face with eyeshadow and lips done, so it mostly goes unused. At this point I mostly ignore what she says about wanting x new product and get her something else I know she likes, or just something she needs (for Mother’s Day I replaced her old ac units). Influencers really are a hell of a drug

I learned so much about application and bought a lot of the drug store products she used and liked. I bought SO MUCH MORE than before. Add in Boxycharm subscription box and I have way more than I can use, but feel the urge to keep buying. I have the money, maybe it's just overall consumer culture mixed with loneliness. I'm 41 and really like Hot & Flashy channel,, she's in her late 50's and shows makeup. I also recently found one called Ber Loves Makeup, a 50 year old women who gets a lot of subscription boxes and uses/shows the stuff. they both seem like regular people , not "influencers" part of that community. Ber is a woman who owns a pizza place in Ohio, she's definitely "real"
