Typology: Archaeological Classification and Grouping

This video is about some of the main methods of classification and grouping or clustering that archaeologists use to make comparisons among sites, regions, or assemblages. It demonstrates with simple examples of stone tools and pottery what the differences among these methods are and what are their strengths and weaknesses.

Classification can be made on the basis of size, shape, raw materials, types, technology, functions, time and space: layer they occurs. Classifications criteria can be different on materials and periods we are dealing with stone tools, Pottery, beads, terracotta, glass objects, metal objects, bones, art objects etc.
