Something wonderful happens to my brain every time I see or hear a typewriter. It's hard to put my finger on, but I just love these things. Wonderful machines. Thanks for the video.

I can relate SO HARD on this! I started collecting in 2018 when I got my first for Christmas. In october I got my second and on my birthday this past December I got my third. And I still want more! They're just kind of expensive. I got mine for decent prices and as a gift. But in reality all together they're worth around 400 dollars. And the downside is I get critisized from kids at school (I'm 14) but I don't care because some think they're cool and so do my teachers. Anyways if you want one I say go for it! It is one of the greatest experiences hearing the sound and how smooth it is when you type

I've seen automatic winders in several of the shops I've been to over the years, but unfortunately i've never had the opportunity to get one. Instead I use a bit of scrap 2x4 with two thin nails stuck in it - I just pop the spools onto the nails then wind by hand. Not very high tech, but it's easy, only takes a moment or two, and never breaks down :)

I just watched this video and was delighted to see how easy it is to change out a ribbon. I just got my hands on a Smith Corona Super Sterling that is in pretty good shape. Looks like it was kept in it's case under the bed for years! Anyway, the ribbon is super old and I when went on line to try to get some new, I can't find anything that admits to being 1 5/8 wide. The ribbon width is 1/2 but the spool size is 1 5/8. So I was thinking your rewinding method (including your genius take up spool thingie) would be perfect. I'm also hoping that the small issue of the take up spool not working consistently would be alleviated with a new spool and more frequent use (and perhaps a drop of oil somewhere...) My main problem is that the spools on the typewriter are rather cheap plastic and don't have the hook to catch the ribbon. I'm also thinking they are the main culprit with the sporadic take up. Other than that everything looks to be in good shape. I hope you actually see this post... maybe you can give me a suggestion as to where I can get the 1 5/8 spools. If you carry it, let me know how I can get my hands on a couple of spools. I do a ton of junk journaling and this will be so helpful in getting away from a computer and printer and being able to use some of my hand made papers to type on . Thanks for your video!

Thanks! A nail can make your day :) I definitely favour the feel of a metal spool. Plastic feels cheap.

Dwayne could you when, you get time, do a video on respooling ribbon for the IBM Selectric 72. The nylon ribbon cartridges are so hard to come by. I have re inked the ribbon with stamp ink but want to know how to respool a new ribbon on. Not sure of the size ribbon to use or if eyelets are necessary etc. Thank you for all that you do for the typosphere community sir!

Hi I live in Alaska and don't have a typewriter repair shop around me. I have an olympia sg1 typewriter and the spacebar doesn't work. The main coil string was all wrapped around the underside of the main spring so I fixed that but it didn't fix my spacebar problem. I then took the back of and a little bar about 2 inches long with several holes in it and two small screws fell out. I have no idea where it goes. Do you have any advice for me?

I don't know without being able to see it up close in-person. I don't have a SG to look at to reference right now, sometimes you need a working machine to figure out how things fit and work.

Is there a certain "age" in which a ribbon is no longer usable, or is it simply a matter of changing it when the imprint is faint?

Re-Inking an old ribbon is futile, old unused ribbons will dry out, testing would be the only way to tell, otherwise when they get too light just replace

What a great idea, way simpler than my original idea of using stamp ink to re-ink the ribbon in my 1950s Remington mechanical typewriter. However locating a generic ribbon around my parts isn't proving to be easy. I see a local shop has a calculator ribbon on spools. Any idea if this would work? Probably a lot shorter in length but I suppose that if the width is the same that it would work. Any chance you've tried this before?

Sure that calculator ribbon is also 1/2 wide & should work, just shorter length.

Appreciate the quick reply, just got off the phone with the store. Placed order for the calculator tape and it'll be here tomorrow. Comes in a double spool much like the typical typewriter ones, and in black/red colours. All for a grand total of $3. Will be posting results here for anyone interested. If this works my fingertips will be grateful to you (for not being covered in stamp pad ink)

Here's an update on how using a calculator ribbon worked. Got the ribbon last week but just now had the chance to install it. Thanks to your detailed steps, replacing this much shorter ribbon was a snap. It appears to be a bit less than half the length of a typewriter's ribbon. But my machine has the ability to spool the other way once it reaches the end, so a shorter ribbon isn't a problem. For anyone considering doing this while retaining the original spools, rest assured that a calculator ribbon works very nicely. It's the same width and material, also comes in black/red. There was no need to use a drill either, since it didn't take long to roll it onto the spool by hand. Think it took me longer to install the ribbon to the machine than it took to roll it (first time installing a ribbon to a 1950's typewriter). Thank you again for posting this video. It saved me from messing around trying to re-ink the ribbon. Something I truly don't recommend, seeing how calculator ribbons are easy to find and are dirt cheap.
