Type 2 Diabetes: Is Your Pancreas Burned Out?? 2024

Many Type 2 Diabetics have been told that their pancreas is "burned out" or exhausted, and has stopped making insulin. Very often this is not true.
There is a simple, affordable lab-test you can ask for that will reveal the truth. Is your doctor's assumption true, or can you get along just fine without having to inject yourself with insulin?
C-Peptide: You can still get this test if your doctor refuses to order it by clicking this link: bit.ly/CPeptideTest1

Dr. Berry, I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic almost 30 years ago. Went through the standard progressively downward spiral, with oral medication giving way to at first, Lantus once a day, and then Novolin R added at meal time. Mealtime dose of Novolin R is 40 units per meal, and Lantus is 40 units nightly. Had a BKA, and now have borderline Stage 4 kidney failure. Nephrologist discontinued Metformin about two years ago, and now the two insulins are the only diabetes meds I take. Last A1C was 7.5, but that was at the start of LCHF eating. Also I have hypertension at 62 years old, and a calculated BMI of 38. It was 41 just 11 weeks ago. Now for the good news. After discovering your videos, I went to the LCHF diet on January 1 of this year. It really wasn't all that hard, once I figured out that I had to just throw away or give away anything I should not eat. I've lost 25 pounds in 90 days, using common foods from my local supermarket, and I feel so much better. My clothing fits better as well, and edema in my good leg and stump, which was so bad that most days I could not force my prosthetic leg on, has now completely resolved. But here finally is my question. Before, with the insulin, I was fixing my glucose numbers and they looked good to my doctor, which is all he wants to talk about. I now eat only two, and often one meal per day, with a daily intake of around 1,500 calories or less (just not hungry for any more), and an average of 25 carbs daily. Healthy fat runs about 65% of my diet now and the rest is protein from meat, eggs, and fish. I'm eating lots of leafy green and cruciferous veggies. Therefore I am taking Novolin less often because I eat less often now. When I lay off the insulin by about one-third, (two doses per day) I seem to lose weight at almost 1.5-2 pounds a week, and I like that. But my blood glucose, especially at wake up, is higher than it was before starting LCHF. Think in terms of 225-250 ish. I must be getting one heck of a liver dump in the morning hours, because I'll often go to bed at 110 and wake up at 250. I have a lot of abdominal fat, so I assume I have a fatty liver, non alcoholic type because I neither smoke nor drink. But when I go back to mealtime insulin 3 times a day, weight loss seems to stop no matter how little I eat. So I get good readings, but stay fat. Also, so-called rapid acting insulin seems to take two to three hours to have any effect on my blood sugar, and keeps working for about seven hours before blood sugar goes as low as it is going to go. The Lantus, so far as I can tell, is doing nothing. In your opinion, if you would like to take a crack at this, am I better off to keep up as much insulin as before to fix my blood sugar numbers, or tolerate a bit higher blood sugar with less insulin to hopefully re-start the weight loss? When fasting, it takes forever for my sugar to drop. Or does this "stall" just happen and am I expecting results too quickly, given how long I have had Type 2 diabetes? I'm sure that I'm pretty darned insulin resistant. I've posed this question to my doctor, who doesn't really want to get into it, because he thinks LCHF is "unhealthy for diabetics". Thanks in advance for any light you can shed.

I've been eating meat and eggs only for 11 years and I am still as diabetic as ever. I cannot even eat dairy. Metformin makes me so sick, I now take a bit of R insulin in the morning to flatten the rise and a bit to cover protein in breakfast. Usually good for the rest of the day. Works beautifully. Don't necessarily put down insulin. The Law of Small Numbers!!

@@diannadunlap4884 thanks! I'll keep that in mind. Perhaps having heard all the success stories of people getting off insulin, I'm expecting too much too soon. I do know that I feel much better and perhaps I should be grateful for just that if nothing else. It is just that I put on 70 pounds in five years on insulin and that really sucks. Take care and be well.

Me neither… I had to ask for a meter after taking a diabetes education class online. Many years ago, He just said I was diabetic and prescribed metformin, and others as time went on. He told me to “eat less, move more” (which got me to the low 6s in A1c for a time) He also said the day would come when meds alone would not control it and insulin would be necessary.

Had Gall bladder removed last May. Sugar was up and was told to get it checked by my PCP. Surgeon thought sugar was up from inflammation as a result of Gall bladder. My DR. thought otherwise. Prescribed Metformin, Januvia and Insulin injections. Got on youtube and searched how to lower blood sugar. Dr Berry was the first video that came up. I watched it and was intrigued. Binge watched all I could find and resolved to start on a Keto diet. Family thought I was crazy. In 2 months A1C went from 9.3 to 6.1. Dr thought the meds are working well. I did not tell her I only took them for the first month. During my November checkup A1C was now 4.6. February checkup 4.8. Dr said no need to come back for 6 months. I consider myself cured and will stay on Keto for the rest of my life. 60 years old, BP was 115/69 last check and all labs were in the normal range. Blood Sugar has not been over 109 since I started Keto. (during Christmas I might have cheated a little) to reach the 109. Only check once a day to make sure everything is good. I now preach Keto to all, not sure how much good I am doing but will continue try to convert people to the best way to live and be healthy.

I am a type2 diabetic. The day before yesterday I ate beans with bread and salad. A very large portion. After the meal I took 500 mg metformin. 2 hours later my glucose level was at 204. I felt awful. I took 500 mg more metformin, that's 1 gr total. I didn't eat anything for the next 18 hours, that is next morning. My glucose in the morning was at 114, almost normal. This shows that my pancreas with a little help from metformin (when I eat carbohydrates) still works. I think that the key to reverse type2 diabetes is intermittent fasting, no sugars, no starches, no breads. Thanks doctor.

Again, Dr Berry, a very heartfelt thank you to you for sharing this info' with the T2D community. Oh, and this info' is also essential reading for people who are suffering from 'My Plate' induced obesity as well. The last time I was given a blood test, I was told by the receptionist - after pestering them to the limit - that my A1c was, er, okay. Well, I'm no MD and did only go to a red brick university, but I think I might manage to understand a wee bit more than 'okay' without being totally flummoxed by techno-speak. What about CRP, triglycerides and C-Peptide? Oh, we don't test for that. Well, what was my A1c? I told you: it was okay. Btw, the doctor will call you to discuss statins and ACE inhibitors....ARRRG!

Thank you for this video, Dr Berry. I'm sure I've probably watched it before but 5he lessen must not have sunk in. My doctor fired me from her practice last week because I refused an immediate appt. to an Endo for an insulin pump. I've been on a keto/carnivore style diet for eleven years. Insulin is low and C-Peptide is midrange. My glucose is still high and I have not been able to figure out why. Today I listened to Dr. Bikman's Metabolic Classroom series and he talked about that in full. Together, your video and his have answered my questions. I couldn't be more grateful. As I suspected last week, my doctor has no idea what fasting insulin or C-Peptide mean. It's so sad. I loved my doctor and now I don't even have one.

I was diagnosed with A1C of 10. Yes...my diet was poor and exercise non-existent. I almost died from sepsis since my immune system was exhausted from the constantly high blood sugar. Big wake up call. Dietitian and doctor both told me to just keep eating carbs but to take insulin several times a day. They meant 'healthy carbs,' of course. Wanted me to eat lots of pasta and rice still. I didn't want to continue eating carbs at all after doing research and realizing that all carbs are basically sugar. Each their own. I went keto and started getting fasting glucose of 85 within a few months. No insulin. That was even before I started adding exercise in. Today, my fasting glucose is fine unless I eat a ton of protein. The body will convert some excess protein into glucose. The good doctor is 100% correct. Don't just assume that your pancreas is dead. Your doctor does not know, because your doctor is not doing the tests required to find out. Give keto a try. Make sure to take plenty of electrolytes the first two weeks, or you'll get cramps, headaches etc. Enjoy the guilt-free bacon. Dietary fat does not equal body fat. I've lost like 65 lbs and I eat an amount of fat that would terrify The American Heart Association.

My daughter & I have been doing BBBE for 2 weeks. She started getting extreme pain attacks... testing shows Pancreatic problems & raised Liver enzymes. She still has more testing to do. I'll have her ask about the specific test you mention. She's disabled & on Medicare, so this might not be possible. Anyway, they're telling her she needs to eat a low fat diet, basically Vegetarian. I'm so confused! I just got her on Keto 2 months ago. (I've been eating Ketogenically since 2019.) She's extremely overweight, previously lived off mostly sugar/bad carbs, and is pre-Diabetic. They started her on Ozempic. I just want to cry. She is going to follow the doc's advice, and believes what they've told her- Keto/BBBE *caused* this! 😓

Luckily for me I am now off my meds completely. I was taking 2000 MG Metformin daily. Never got bad enough to need insulin however. The highest A1C I saw was 7.2. Got Keto wise months(years now) ago. I do have one thought however. When I was first diagnosed as T2D in 2011 my earlier research suggested that higher blood glucose destroyed the Beta cell on the Pancreas. Once destroyed there was no getting them back. So in my case I am wondering how much of my condition is due to lack of insulin production due to loss of Beta cell function or Insulin Resistance or both? You can be sure my next doc visit I'm going to ask for the C-Peptide test. Possibly HOMA-IR as well. But I can control mine through diet.

So I’ve been on keto (almost carnivore) for 16 months and I did it out of curiosity thinking I might be insulin resistant even though doctors never checked my blood sugar or anything due to the fact that I was thin. But I suffered from other internal issues such as gall bladder stones, uterine fibroids, kidney stones, depression & anxiety, migraines and my mother is diabetic. So I went on the diet but I did not think to check my markers before the diet but 4 months into a strict keto plus IF as well as several prolonged fasts I decided to see what my A1C was and I was surprised to find out I was at the lower end of pre-diabetes (5.7-5.8). And every time I checked since I am stubbornly at the same level which worried me so I asked my endocrinologist for an insulin test. He did a fasting C Peptide and mine came extremely low (1.1) and at this time my A1C finally dipped down to 5.6. He said no sign of insulin resistance here and he thought that the reason for my insulin being so low was my keto diet so he didn’t seem worried but now I am worried that it maybe because my pancreas is burnt out. Why else would my A1C be sow high. I think it’s high for such a low fasting insulin. What do you think? Should I be worried?

I am struggling with this now, and have been to my doctor a lot over the past couple of years. Unfortunately, he has never mentioned a C-Peptide test. So after watching this today, I called for an appointment to do just that. Also, I have known that carbs raise my blood sugar far more and for a far longer time than sugar. I've tried to cut as many carbs as possible, but am still having trouble. One thing is that I don't get is the exercise I need, and I'm working on that. I'm not obese and have historically been in great shape, but looking back, I believe I've been dealing with blood sugar issues for over thirty years... I've just ignored or not known the symptoms I should have been looking out for. On top of all this, I have had some serious digestive issues over the past four years (hospitalized in 2020 with colitis and then had my gallbladder removed), and I now believe these issues are _also_ tied to my pancreas.

Ken I Really enjoy your Videos and I do hope you can address this ONE concern that I have and that is THIS:- "CAN A FATTY PANCREAS SEEM LIKE A BURNED OUT PANCREAS?". So perhaps because of the surrounding FAT the beta cells in the pancreas cannot detect the glucose in the blood and so simply stand idle AND/OR perhaps because of a FATTY PANCREAS the Beta cells cannot get the insulin into the blood stream. I would love to hear your views on this aspect! Many Thanks Peter

My diet is perfect yet my sugars still spike. Cut out all insulin before meals 2 years ago, take only Lantus at bedtime. My question is, (as I plan to lose more weight), as I become thinner, would that help my pancreas to work less to possibly get off of insulin, or am I probably stuck taking insulin for the rest of my life?
