Tynemouth open air pool, and surrounding area. Outdoor swimming pool. Approx 1986. VHS C recording.

Transferred from a video I made (VHS C) while on holiday around 1986.
Tynemouth Outdoor Pool before it was closed down. Very short but just enough to see what it used to look like. Hope you enjoy.

We used to have a pool & paddling pool at Ferndene Park, Ryton, until until a few years after Gateshead clowncil took over Ryton UDC and closed them and had them filled in, that park used to get visitors by the coach load every summer, rumour has it that Gateshead didn't like the idea of Saltwell Park losing visitors to Ferndene and removd it's main atraction, namely the pools.

I remember an open-air swimming pool (quite small I think) in Ryton back in the mid 1960's. In a park if I remember correctly!

Hi David, is this the Open air swimming pool at Cullercoats (Tynemouth) Tyne & Wear as it looks remarkably like it and if so then your wonderful video brings back some wonderful memories of a holiday that i spent up at Cullercoats/Whitley Bay as a youngster around the early to mid 1970s, i can also remember an indoor Swimming pool we often visited which actually had Manufactured waves and i can also remember an ice rink we also often visited that if memory serves me right was near to a Football Stadium and possibly Whitley Bay FC.....We stayed at a YMCA/Youth Hostel which i am sure was at a place called Marden/Marton/Marsden road or Avenue close to the beach.....It's been a long 45 plus years since i was last in the vacinity so i thank you for your short video which i am convinced is the said Open air Swimming pool.

Billy Cottrell . Hello Billy. Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, this is the open air pool at Tynemouth as you mentioned. I have a few other videos on KZread too, showing some more of Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, plus a few updated ones too. You should find them easy enough if you search down my list of videos. I went to the Ice rink too, and it's not too far from here. I grew up in Newcastle and moved away back in 1971, hence the videos of my visits back there. Glad you enjoyed it. David. 👍🏻

Why on earth did the local council not keep it in working order, it is tragic what has happened to such a lovely pool. They could have restored it to it's original glory a few years ago.

We were in the area again last week and it still looks a mess. I heard somewhere though that there's talk of doing it up again. Thank you for watching and your comment. 👍

Probably realised it's not worth it for the two weeks per year that we have warm weather

David, Thank-you so much for your wonderful video's which have really made my night and brought back so many happy Memories from my time as a youngster up at Tynemouth, Cullercoats & Whitley Bay all those years ago, I'm from Manchester and back in the day my Father worked on Gas, Oil & Aviation Pipelines across the length and breath of the UK and during the summer school holidays we would more than often as a family spend a few weeks on vacation where ever our Dad was working and thankfully that most beautiful area of the North East Coast etched itself deep into my heart as a very special place i have never forgotten from all those years ago. Looking at your video's today through the eyes of a child as i did back then i can still very clearly see the sandy beach at King Edwards Bay heaving with deck chaired Holiday makers from all walks of life all lapping up the sun with hordes of kids including myself, my Brother and 3 Sisters racing across the sands and diving into the bitterly cold North East Sea before heading across the beach to that incredible Outdoor Swimming pool that was actually situated within the North Sea and fully open to all the elements that was thrown at it. The one thing from your great Video's that i can not recollect seeing while in eye shot of Swimming Pool & Tynemouth Pier is the Castle which from your footage looks impossible to miss from anywhere within those said areas, but i honestly did not know until i watched your footage this evening that there was actually a Castle in Tynemouth. A little further up the coast at Cullercoats we would spend the first few hours of each morning racing each other down to the beach before scrambling across the rocks with crab lines in tow to find the deepest and best rock-pools to catch Sea crabs which our Mother was never over excited about us doing. Then like i have explained we would spend time at the Ice Skating Rink, an indoor swimming pool that had Waves and on several occasions i can also remember visiting an Amusement Park called Spanish City which had a strange looking big white building as a feature and if memory serves me right and on more than one occasion we also visited a Lighthouse which if i remember correctly was a bit of a trek to get to. One day in the not too distant future i aim to point my car in the direction of the North East and track back to the place that was a big part of my life as a youngster, i come very close to fulfilling that wish a few years ago when as a Pipeline Welder in our Family run business i was assigned to work on a section of the Enron Gas Pipeline that ran from ICI in Redcar to a place called Seal Sands in Hartlepool (which has got to be the coldest place on Planet earth) but sadly that was as close to Tynemouth that i got before being shipped off to another job down South (Purfleet). Once again David thank-you so much for your great video's and the wonderful insight into the place you call Home, i am so looking forwards to returning to that most picturesque part of the North East coast that not only become a big part of my life as a kid, but also the lives of my whole Family who enjoyed every single moment of our visit to Tynemouth and it's surrounding areas......Cheers Mate.

Aye those were the days when councils spent tax payers money well! The place is a Sh*t hole now. it all died when they sold off Spanish City. When the fairground went and the best bars demolished it became just another ghost town. Millions spent (wasted) on the dome (champagne & oysters...really!) and a Premier Inn?? Parking permits trebled in price, cashless parking machines put the pensioners and families with kids in a pickle. Di Meo's the best place in town for family meals & ice-cream again if you can find somewhere to park!. otherwise just keep driving. Seaburn seems to be the best alternative right now.
