TWSBI Swipe - First Impressions

In this video, I give you my first/early impressions of the #TWSBISwipe cartridge converter fountain pens. At the time of the video, I have written with the Smoke Medium nib pen for 6 days and the Prussian Blue Broad nib pen for two days. I will let you know more observations in the mid month progress report video! My pens were purchased with my own pen allowance from Lemur Ink and Vanness Pen Shop.
I'm a big fan of TWSBIs and I have more TWSBIs than any other brand that I write with on a daily basis! I take their smooth nibs and reliability for granted at this point! Even though I do see some variation in the line width (especially on Broad nibs) I love them and Medium is my favorite nib size.
Here are some measurements (approximate):
Length Capped 138 mm, 5 and 7/16"
Length Uncapped 127 mm, 5"
Grip Diameter 9.3 (where I grip it)
Weight 17.7 grams inked capped
Weight 12.5 grams inked uncapped
I find this pen has so much to love - it's super easy to clean out and long term maintenance seems like it will be a breeze and quite comparable to other cartridge converter pens. An added BONUS is that the converters both come apart for easy cleaning --WOW -- that's a big plus in my ink testing world.
These Swipe pens have a snap cap, they fall in the mid range for TWSBIs entry level pens: Go, Swipe and Eco. At this point there are only 2 colors but I bet they will offer more and hopefully even expand their models of cartridge converter pens!!!!
The only two cons I have are the 2 color choices vs the array of Eco colors and to be honest I'm not one to pull the nibs and feeds on the TWSBI pens because I fear harming the feeds. This is a personal quirk of mine.
I think these pens are well worth the $26.99 and I think TWSBI has done a really thing diversifying into cartridge converter territory!!!!!

TWSBI’s converter is SO impressive; both in the capacity and that it can be easily taken apart. Kind of boggles my mind that companies make converters that cant be disassembled

Hi Yobo -- some folks are able to get the Lamy ones apart ... I need to slow down and figure out if it's just my skippy brain or lack of patience or what but I have had to dedicate some converters to stainy ink and purchase a few extras ... because of my (so far) inability to get them apart for cleaning. So this is such a refreshing feature on the Swipe!!!!!! It's an game changing move on TWSBIs part and I really like it!!!!!

Aloha Chris! Thanks for taking the time to post a video showcasing possibly the hottest pen of 2021 (for sure in the sub-$50 category!) I have the Prussian Blue with a medium nib arriving early this coming week, so I don't have any hands-on experience with the pen. Thanks for covering stuff like nib inconsistencies, price compared to other entry level pens, etc .... What I wanted to comment on was that the original feeds that came with the Eco and GO had very soft fins, so not matter how delicate you handled the pulling of the nib and feed, you for sure would bend some of the fins. I am noticing the same thing with PenBBS feeds that are even thinner, so they bend much easier. But I noticed that my new GO's and Eco's have a much stiffer fins, so I am expecting the SWIPE to be as durable? Just keep in mind when you replace the nib and feed, that feed has a flat spot on the bottom edge (away from the nib) that fit's into a corresponding flat spot in the grip section. The feed also has an indent so the nib can only go to that point. As for the new spring converter, I think it would aid in cleaning, just like cleaning the GO? But after doing that, I would still pop it off the section and shoot water into it with a syringe just like a normal converter. The only thing that bothered me in the product images and reviews is seeing the spring in the ink window, whereas the regular converter would not have that issue. Sorry for the longish comment. Mahalo from Kauai, Hawaii. Kind regards, Thomas

Hi Thomas! That may be one reason I don't like the spring converter -- I see enough of the springs in the Go pens!!! LOL That is interesting too that the feeds coming out now may be more hearty. I wonder sometimes when I see people pull them out so easily without a care. :)

@@ChrisSaenz13 I'll find out soon which of the two converters I prefer and if I like the pen overall - I don't see why not as it should perform just like a GO and Eco. I don't mind the grip section of the GO and the SWIPE looks to be about the same (exactly the same?), but with a clear, harder plastic compared to the GO? I actually find the softer plastic of the GO to be easier to grip than a hard plastic, although it does look cheap. Another issue that I just discovered on one of my GO pens is the lip of the cap liner has a crack in it, so the cap doesn't snap on (and off) with certainty as it did new. I contacted Phillip and he offered to send me a new cap for $5 - haven't decided yet! But I am sure if you do damage the feed, he would be willing to send you a replacement, you just need to pay for shipping. And I just checked my GO's and Eco's and for sure some have thicker and firmer fins than others. Plus usually the first time you pull a nib and feed it tends to be harder to do than subsequent attempts? Take care, Thomas

@@ChrisSaenz13 Being able to see the big spring in the GO is why many users love it. It's the "industrial" look that's very popular in the art world right now. I suspect this is why they put a spring converter in the Swipe. I like the look. Besides, the spring isn't as evident when the converter is filled with ink. To me, the GO, and the Swipe, have a businesslike and industrial design to them, and the springs are a big part of this. It's all personal taste, but I like being able top see the spring in both pens.

I just ordered one of these to try, but I think I might be most excited about the converter with the spring. I may not use it to fill the pen (as I find the TWSBI Go a bit awkward to fill), but the spring loaded design might be great for cleaning other pens quickly. The Go is so fast to clean with that spring loaded design. And I'm excited to try the pen and to have another knockabout pen that I can maybe leave in my classroom or lend to my students without having to worry too much. Excited to try it either way, and thanks for the review/first impressions!

There is much more to explore because I need to try out standard international cartridges (non-TWSBI) and see how well those do in it and also I'm curious about the fit of the TWSBI converter in other pens which is something I can try now with those spare spring converters. Lots of little tinkering projects to keep busy with. :)

But I love the idea of making this my shimmer ink pen as it is easily cleaned. Also my TWSBI Eco with my only Broad nib developed a hairline crack right where my index finger goes. It’s apparently not an uncommon problem but quite a bummer. I just checked and my local shop has them in stock! Thanks for doing this video. Now to decide on the nib. Thanks for your video Chris, good comparisons with the rest of the TWSBIs and pals. I started with a Prussian Blue in M, and ended up with 2 more Smoke in B and Stub. I think their nibs are much better tuned than the Ecos I have. Perhaps their QA has improved the nib quality overall. In fact they were so good right out of the box, I did not have to tinker with them at all. Other than aligning their nibs with the TWSBI logo on the barrel, lol. I see you are liking Diamine Earl Grey; I tried it on the B nib and it was annoyingly too dry. As Inky Rocks has posted, the Swipes are all great cleaners. It was her video that inspired my to get the 3rd Stub swipe; she raved how easily she was able to clean up her Stub Swipe from her worse offender of glass-pen-only ink she used. I was pleasantly surprised how smooth writer the Swipe is, in all 3 nib sizes. The M is the 'pencilest' of the bunch, but they are all smooth and gloriously wet. The only issue I have run into with all three Swipes I have is that the pop cap action shakes the nib too much. I have had ink droplets all over and on my hands because of that. The same issue causes the seal cap getting ink stains between the seal cap and the actual cap, that makes for quite visible stains that are not easy to clean. You won't see that on the Prussian Blue, but it is there in both color variants. I had to use a compressed air can to expel the ink out of that area. And then it comes back after a few pops. Overall great pens to use, posted or not. TWSBI will sell lots, especially when they start offering more colors.

Hi Vagelis -- I was having that same issue with ink droplets in the cap and on the nib of the Broad nib Swipe. I know I'll have to stay on top of it because I don't like stains in the cap liner -- I've had that in the Go. They are really smooth nibs and I think the reason I like Diamine Earl Grey in a M nib is that is won't bleed thru my Leuchtturm bullet journal!!! The paper is what needs the slightly drier ink must be. :)

The smoke I did unscrew with difficulty, but I used a rubber grip to get the blue unscrewed. I agree the clips are way too tight, so I'll carry them in a two pen case. I do like them both, but may eyedropper them in the future, because the ink may corrode the spring in time maybe.

There are inert or almost inert materials such as stainless steel which wouldn't be a problem. And I'm sure Twsbi put some thought into it. With this price tag, this isn't the pen people will expect to last many and many years. This seems a great pen, don't get me wrong. Having the cartridge and a converter included in the box will make it easier for beginners.

The effort you put into these videos is really impressive. I've not seen another pen reviewer on youtube go to such effort, it was great. I've been looking for a pen for a long time that is clear, with a broad nib, that takes standard international cartridges, and is under $50. Although not totally clear this is the closest I've seen. The Platinum Preppy would be great if it came in a broad nib, and the Lamy Vista would be great if it took standard cartridges but unfortunately neither do. This is the closest I've seen, I've never tried a TWSBI before but hopefully it writes well. Do you know of any pens that might fit my criteria of being totally, clear with a broad nib, that takes standard international cartridges, for under $50? Thanks for the excellent review.

Hi Inazarab - wow that's a dream pen .... I'm not thinking of one right off hand that's a clear demonstrator under $50 and takes standard international cartridges. But one pen that comes to mind right off as one of my favorite demonstrators is my Noodler's Ahab all clear outfitted with the Fountain Pen Revolution Ultra Flex EF nib that one comes in about $45 with the nib upgrate/addition but it takes a cartridge converter or eyedropper ... I don't think it takes a cartridge but I will have to investigate. I'll keep myself alert to such a pen as you are looking for and let you know if something comes to my attention!!! The Lamy Vista is a great pen and with an ink syringe you can clean out and refill the cartridge using any samples or bottles of ink. :)

@@ChrisSaenz13 Thank you so much for the advice. It’s really kind of you. I love flex nibs but I’ve heard mixed things about Noodlers pens. I’ve heard they can sometimes leak and can be spotty, what’s been your experience with them? I’ve been seriously considering the Vista with an adapter, and I also love the huge variety bottled ink offers, but I’ve never used bottled ink and I’m kind of intimidated by it. How steep do you think the learning curve is to start using bottled ink? Maybe it’s time for me to make the jump. Again thank you so much for your informative videos and great advice.

I have a similar style converter that I got with a blunt needle, but the spring is around the plunger, not in the ink reservoir. Not a big fan. Mainly because I have difficulty with one hand, so it's as awkward for me as the slide type converters. One of the biggest reasons I've not gotten a TWSBI yet was the fairly large ink capacity. Takes too long to use a fill of ink, for me, as I like switching things up regularly. So, this TWSBI looks interesting to me. Not sure about the looks, but I keep hearing good about TWSBI. About my ink usage, and why the larger ink capacity isn't great for me: I just got done writing 20 letters (I'm currently going through a book of stamps a month), and I didn't use much over 2 regular converter fills. (I generally have smaller handwriting, so ink can go a long way, for me. 😉) Took a year to get through one eyedropper filler I have... Months for a piston filler or vacuum filler. Fine, except for letter writing, where I use an ink each month, that generally doesn't get much use, otherwise. So, this TWSBI looks interesting to me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it! (Also, aren't inky fingers the badge of honour of a fountain pen user? 😁)

I think the spring converter might be intended to be quicker to fill than the regular converter (similar to the Go). I like the idea of being able to disassemble the converter, not sure that it’s a feature I would use often, but it could make cleaning more of a breeze perhaps. @PaulHerman I just want to add a note that you are certainly under no obligation to fully fill a TWSBI to capacity, nor for that matter any twist type converter, which is essentially the body of the TWSBI Eco. Vacuum type fillers I always find tricky to get a full fill anyway; I gave away my TWSBI Vac because it’s not my favourite type of filling mechanism and I don’t like keeping an opening for continuous ink flow (pens don’t look as pretty with a valve open, imho). I did travel by airplane with an Eco and it did leak during the trip (although not until quite a few days after the flight), so I understand the appeal of a vac system; I guess I don’t travel enough to worry about it.

@@kimberly3706s I really don't travel, and my inks and I stay pretty close to home. 😉 I understand that I don't have to fill completely, but I still have the tendency, and a dislike of just emptying a pen back into the bottle. That's why most of my pens are either cartridge converter or vintage sac fillers (which tend to hold about the same amount of ink as a cartridge, in my experience.) I do generally have a bigger capacity pen in use for the ink I'm currently using for just jotting down things and general use, but the others, I like to change more often than what I can with the bigger capacity pens generally allows me to do. The Wing Sung 3013/Paili 013 is a vacuum filler that doesn't need to have the blind cap open. Not exactly sturdy (the cap tends to break where the clip attaches), but...

@@paulherman5822 It’s certainly true for my writing that a TWSBI lasts longer than other inked pens; sometimes I desire that security of knowing that I have the freedom to write as much as I’d like without needing a spare pen or more ink. I favour TWSBI for writing outside my home, whether travel or just out locally; as well as for sketching. I do think I understand your point though - I feel similarly about ink bottles, guilty for buying any because in all my years of writing I have only completely finished one bottle (I am close to finishing a second bottle, but “close” may still be ages away from occurring). I do share my inks, as well as use them in artistic pursuits, but one bottle still seems to last forever.

Hi Paul!!!! Oh wow it's so interesting that you mentioned the using up of a full (Piston fill) TWSBI ... just recently, I'm doing so much writing that I end up filling my TWSBI Eco almost weekly and that's with using more than one pen of course (usually 8 pens) but my grey ink Eco gets flushed and refilled very often!!!! I think it's due to my extra notetaking and journaling at this time!!!!! It's making me realize I may want to put a M nib on a Opus 88 and go for the grey ink. :) That would give me at least another 1.3 mls of ink to go thru. Oh yes and the way I use B and stubs explains much of my ink usage with letter writing and notetaking even. :)

I've always been reluctant to recommend TWSBIs to beginners because I think the piston fill can add confusion. I think the Swipe is a great new alternative for beginners, as it retains the benefits of the brand but has a filling mechanism that is easier to use and clean. For myself, given that I already have a fistful of ECOs, I may pass for now. Unfortunately, I don't like the aesthetics, especially the clip. (What is it with TWSBIs and ugly clips?) As for changing nibs on TWSBIs, Chris, you really must try! It's not that hard at all. Just avoid crushing the fins with your fingers. Once you know they are fragile, that's all you need to know. I tend to grasp nib and feed by the sides. It's not as easy as changing a Lamy Safari nib, but so worth it for a better pen!

Hi Marilyn!!! Yes, I've felt the same way on beginners and TWSBIs just because I would never want to discourage someone who might view the whole process as too confusing. The Swipe even having the cartridge option is just so great! I will definitely try a nib pulling soon. Sometimes I wonder if it's strength -- it's always that first pull with other pens like the X750s then after that I'm good. They sometimes feel like a tooth. I'll have to re-watch Drew's video on it and get brave. :)

I haven't tried changing the nib on the Swipe yet, but it looks as easy as the ECO. I almost never change nibs unless there's a problem. I've probably changed or repaired a thousand nibs over the decades, mostly for customers, but I buy pens with nibs I like, and if they work well, I leave them along. If I want a different size or different grind, I buy a second pen. I really like the nib on the Swipe. I think it makes the pen far better looking than all the pens out there with same old, same old clips. But I like the ECO. I don't find them ugly at all. Matter of taste. I also prefer cartridge/converter pens over piston fillers. I have a lot of piston fillers, and one of my all time favorite pens for writing, the Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age, is a piston filler, but I love it despite the fill system, not because of it. Fortunately, there are a lot of expensive pens, much more so than the Homo Sapiens, that are cartridge/converters. But the Swipe gives all the advantages of a cartridge/converter with added ink capacity, and I do think this is a game changer.

Hi Paulino - it's friction fit so carefully so as not to harm the feed -- it pulls out. I do not like to do this. These pens are for people who write horizontally. Most write at an oblique angle. Even if TWSBI has 2 flairs at end of a cylindrical section near nib, it's distracting for those who write correctly at a slightly oblique angle. Good pens don't put that crap at the end of section. It can flair evenly, roundly to hold fingers in place but NOT with two flairs suggesting "You better write horizontally, or else".
