In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson shows a trick he came across by
accident many years ago that became a major influence to how he processes backing
vocals. In this two step cocktail, there are simple yet effective moves with two separate
plugins that enhance background vocals in a major way and put them right in the sweet
spot for the listener.
Happy Mixing!

Boz Digital Labs +10db compressor is step 1 for getting my vocals pinned in place. Quick question for you, Warren: Any updates on the prizes for the Feb 2023 Rate My Mix mix competition? I got 3rd place (you called my mix "dangerous") and the guy that was corresponding on it said "you'll hear from me this weekend" on May 1. Since then silence. Any updates?

A parallel MicroPitchSlap from the H3000 by Eventide allows me to musically thicken vocals. I adjust the tuning so it isn’t drastic (5-10 up and down) and decrease the delay slap to well under Haas (10-20ms) so the slap is unnoticeable…

Eq of choice is Cubase's stock Eq Frequency. It allows you to sidechain Frequencies out of the way of each other as well as being a dynamic eq. Then the lead vocal goes to my outboard gear, BLA Bluey Compressor into a BLA Seventeen compressor. They do something magical to a vocal. Then into a send chain of reverbs and delays.

Not something a Pro would use but I really like the Chris Lord Alge plugin from Waves. Quick, easy and great sounding for a base line. Also use H Delay on two sends - one set to a regular delay, the other with a faster setting and pingpong.
Marc is such a class act. Thanks as always for featuring him!

It's cool that you admit you discovered this by accident. It's actually quite similar to how the "Dolby A vocal trick" works - dynamically enhancing the top end to increase separation from the tape hiss.
I never miss a video from Marc. Always offers such great examples of his workflow.

Lovely guy. He has really transformed the way I mix my own music, especially - to work the plugins with more subtlety but in more steps, to enhance the final product in a more calibrated tasteful way. Thanks Marc!
Combining this with whispering tracks might be a great combo
Every single time, a practical, relatively easy to understand trick to get more from your mix. I'm so impressed with MDN. Thank you, again. I love the humbleness to admit "this was an accident that works". Can't wait for the next tip. 🦄

I love the reverse Jumper - mirroring the reverse expansion trick in fashion. MDN is just the most interesting Mixing Artist I know.
Love Marc's videos, I watch everyone! Marc always has such great in depth detailed explanation for what is doing, one of my favorite mixers, and I love all of the music he works on. Thanks PLP for putting the out!
Dan is the man- bought all of his courses. Elegant dude- he has a fabulous attention to detail and the headspace he taps into while he is mixing is really that of an artist at work. Lovely

Funny you mention hearing “whispering” on certain vocal tracks. A friend of mine who’s done a lot of recording with some of the biggest names in blue grass, said they would sometimes actually record a track of whispered vocals to give the harmonies air. Great video.

i double track whispers a lot and hard pan them under the lead vox - can be a nightmare on the sibilance but if you produce it right it's really cool.

Very!
On Vocals I like to EQ it early with a UAD hitsville EQ or similar because it's non sergical and sounds great for just balencing it first. sometimes that fixes 70% of bandwidth problems if I went in with a surgical Pro Q3 and started making cuts and things mearly on, I find oftern I inadvetantly damage the natural timbre of vocal takes. thats my tip..don't jump in and start agressivly fixing things, sure you may get rid of unwanted frequenceys but you can very quickly kill the sound. also Marcs jumper seems to be inside out.
Pretty cool

Hi, i loved the video. Could you tell us where is a good place to HIpass the background vocals? like 250hz would be good?
Thanks for a very interesting video and for your generosity by sharing this trick! However I’m not quite sure I got the whole trick? You’re saying that the MJUC compressor on the BGV bus is controlling some of the pokey parts on the bgv and that it is side chained, but from which signal? Is it from the lead vocal to make sure that the compressor creates room for the LV, by ducking the bgv, or is the side chain signal coming from the dry bgv signal, but only the part of the signal above 400 Hz will trigger the compressor to react? Thanks!
Jumper is inside out Marc :))

his charisma is coming out from my monitor.
Still can’t get a grasp on sidechain and bus.Shed any light on it for me?Need to step my mixing game up.
Wow. Thank you for this video and technique. I always wondered how people made the BGs tucked back but still being present. It is kind of contra intuitive for me though :-)
Brilliant! as usual BUT I dont get why the MJ is sidechained at such a low freq ie 400? EDIT: My mistake...after all the HF...the 400 is just the HP filter for the internal sidechain...quick look at the manual MJ
Juggler! I steal this! Thy Sir.
This shows how important that the tracking is done to a high standard. Don't think you can fix badly recorded tracks & get it sounding like Marc.
Nice. How were you EQing the vocal’s reverb?
When a mistake or accident becomes the biggest thing: In my circle, we call it the "Ooops... F***...WOAH!!! Factor".
@Producelikeapro
Жыл бұрын
hahaha! Indeed
I’m confused. Is this expansion or upward compression of the high end. I have always not been sure which one Pro-MB is doing?
Is your sweater inside out?
That expander is effectively acting as a wide eq boost with a very basic envelope controlling it... I cannot think of any reason that would work any better than just a conventional eq. If the band had a narrower q I could see the point, but as is I think this is very close to snake oil territory...
@marcdanielnelson317
Жыл бұрын
Not correct. At all. It sounds nothing like boosting the top band of an eq.
@lastboxofsparklers
Жыл бұрын
@@marcdanielnelson317 what I wrote is technically correct, if you're hearing something else it is some sort of bias, or possibly the attack and release time (but I doubt the envelope would make any major difference). If the whole idea is that you're using the attack and release to shape the vocals you should have probably explained how you did that.
@lastboxofsparklers
Жыл бұрын
@@marcdanielnelson317 another thing it could potentially be you're hearing is the "smearing" at the ends of the curve, but that is usually not a thing people like, and again something you should have explained. As is, this "trick" is just too random to be used as a general thing.
@iam-music
4 ай бұрын
Because its now time domain and the highest freq transients are proportionally louder so the tone memory of the brain 'sees' it differently. It is nothing like a static boost...its not the transmitter, its the receiver ;-)

@@iam-music did you miss the "envelope" part of my reply?
Hi, is Marc a son of Jude Law? 🤔
Marc, you're very talented and seem like one heck of a good guy, but no amount of work on this plastic, vanilla drivel of a song will restore my will to live. I'm concentrating hard to drop my razor blade. Wait, King Crimson video on the horizon. All good, now.
Aren't choruses supposed to be catchy?
great first impression of Marc
I'm flabbergasted. It is night and day and yet there is so little move. Amazing.
