The irony of the modern church using this verse is that they’re quoting Satan in Job chapter 1, where he says that the only reason Job is so dedicated is because he’s so well-protected by God.

@@auntlynnie- I think it’s a bushel basket, too. And it’d mean you need the light to see by, but you’re hiding it so people can’t easily find you just by following the bright candle in the dark. But if it’s a bush then idk.

The “watery grave” of baptism. Being raised a CofC PK, it didn’t occur to me that it sounded kind of morbid until my (then) husband and stepson pointed it out to me. I was about 30 at the time. The things that are so “normal” to us within our indoctrination can be wild & weird when someone points them out or when we start to deconstruct said indoctrination. At this point in my life, I fully believe the CofC is a gigantic cult that is not widely recognized as such. The trauma, man.

Oddly that's the only water related, church related idiom I *did* understand well in childhood. I grew up in the desert, so the only bodies of water I interacted with were swimming pools, and drowning prevention is super emphasized.

So what thing did you do that upset the balance of the universe? You know "god" had already too much on his hands that you added another headache. "he" was probably tending to someone's prayers for better chicken dinner, a winning bingo number or creating a new galaxy.
