Two Colors, One Marker?!? Acrylic Brush Marker Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you want to save space in your art studio these markers might be for you. they have 2 colors per marker, usually a lighter and darker tone of each and they store compactly in a box. Let's see if they are any good.
40 color set (24 makers in plastic case) amzn.to/3qmJlwQ
60 color set (530 markers in a chipboard box) amzn.to/3rS7b3R
Pros:
Nice color selection
Ready to go (no priming needed)
Packaged in reusable storage
Waterproof and permanent
Easy to use
Cons:
Since there are 2 colors sharing a barrel they will likely run out faster than a one-color marker
I had some difficulty getting a fine line with the brush tip so you may need additional fine liners.
Bottom line: If space is at a premium and you like the convenience of a light and dark shade of each colors chosen for you you will like these. However if you have more space to spare you might want to go with one color markers as they will likely last you longer and are about the same price.

Posca has a limited selection of brush tip markers. I have a few colors. They are pretty ok, but the brush can get a little dry and you have to prime them all the time.

Great video, Lindsay. I’m sort of confused by the advantages/disadvantages of acrylic vs alcohol vs water based markers. What are the different uses of acrylic markers and alcohol markers? I don’t use markers, but I’d like to try out some. I just don’t know how to start experimenting with them. Maybe another video for noobs? Thanks as always, Lindsay!

Acrylic markers are acrylic paint in a marker and are fairly opaque. Alcohol markers have Alcohol ink and water based markers have a watercolor ink. Both are transparent. It depends on the surface you want to paint and the look you are after.

Hullo Lindsay, I do enjoy your reviews even when I have NO Plans to buy supplies. I sometime think it might be good that your trying these out so I do not have to go buy! Yes, I have been accused of being an Art supply hoarder, but every time I have cleaned out my studio or even a storage space I regret the supplies I let go of or in some cases throw away! now when a tube if paint (unless it is watercolor) has dried up that is an easy call but paper? I even have rolls from my big Epson printer that are still boxed and ready to go to work but the printer is not, so they sit. I just really enjoy your videos and do appreciate your efforts, Thank You.

I purchased the smaller set back when you first showed them. I have only used them for painting rocks (which I put down a white acrylic paint down first). Overall I thought that they worked quite well. As long as you are planning your blending so you can do it quickly, they do okay.

I always try and use rocks that are relatively smooth to start and coating them first also helps. So far (I think between my granddaughter and myself) we have done around 10 and they are holding up to the abuse.@@thefrugalcrafter

It's great that they don't run. I spent a whole day painting a project using Arteza markers. I waited a couple of days to make sure everything dried completely. Then, i gently brushed with Liquitex Gloss Medium. The colors ran and lifted some more than others. The blues and greens were worse than the rest.

Would these work well on wood or canvas? I like painting small canvases and those wood decorative pieces and have some poscas. I really like them but would like more colors as I like to “color” simple designs. Which acrylic markers would you recommend?

How convenient - I'm looking to buy some acrylic markers. Out of all the brands you've tried, is there one you recommend above the rest? I know Poscas are supposed to be great, but I was honestly underwhelmed with my set and I'm looking for something new.

Honestly, they are all fairly similar, but it depends on what you want. These are waterproof and ready to go, but not 100% opaque. For an opaque version, you will want one that needs to be pumped, but then you can pick extra fine, chisel, or bullet nibs. It just depends. There will be less ink in each color since there are 2 colors per barrel, so it's good for an occasional user but not a heavy user. Figure out your needs and then choose the best marker for you.

If you layer the less opaque colors do they become more opaque? Or would you have to put a layer of white down first to increase their opacity?

How can I train my eye to see values? ie When you said these two colors are the same value, but different colors. My eye/brain doesn’t see the value. I see the colors and that one is more opaque. If I were asked about their relative value I would probably say they are different… 😂 I need to work on this. I love the color range of these!

  • @thefrugalcrafter

    @thefrugalcrafter

Value is simply how dark they are. You can buy or make a value card with different shades of Grey. They have a hole punched in each square of Grey so you can hold it over a color and match values. Use that for a while and it will become 2nd nature.

Do you mean single color? What kind of tips do you want? Arrtx has a single end brush with white Bareilles that are permanent. The dual ended ones are more like gouache. amzn.to/44lsp7K Ohuhu has a fine (plastic nib like extra fine posca) and bullet dual end marker with one color each: amzn.to/3snkCJu And the Cadillac of acrylic paint pens is Poscs with any tip or color you want open stock. This is a good set to start with: amzn.to/3EqczOZ also you can refill them (not sanctioned by the company tho 😉)
