Can a Subscription Box be Sustainable?
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
A company reached out to me and offered to send me a product. This happens a lot and I often say "no" unless it is something viewers have requested or I think it is something new and innovative or a good alternative to what is on the market. This box was sent to me for free to check out.
You can read about their sustainable mission here: the-hobby-hop.subbly.me/artic...
I looked over their website and from what I can see from past kits this is more for the craft curious or beginner crafter or someone who wants to do crafts with their kids, pre-teens especially. (*Please note: The designers of the box have said they designed this for busy mommas who are short on time and want to grab a box and go craft and it may contain sewing needles and other products not designed for children.) I think many people would enjoy the projects but advanced crafters probably wouldn't be challenged enough by the contents and probably have the supplies they are featuring already. I think this is perfect for casual hobbists who want everything they need for a project all in one spot so they can sit down and make something. Reviewers said they had enough supplies to make 4-7 projects which brings down the cost per use of the box to an affordable per-project price.
Cost: The boxes cost between $40 and $49 depending on how much you pay upfront. Shipping was about $7.50 when I typed in my info on the order form and it seems to be shipped USPS flat rate so you will need to add that to the box price to determine if it is worth it.
Bottom line: I like the idea of making project kits from supplies that might otherwise go to waste and the fact two women can make that into a business. It allows them to put more value in the box I think. If you want to learn more about this subscription box you can visit The Hobby Hop website: the-hobby-hop.subbly.me/

Thanks Lindsay for helping out another company. It wouldn’t be for me, but I wouldn’t mind passing it along to parents.
The kit looks fun! The price is a bit steep, but considering everything you get and four different projects included, you can't go wrong!
This is cute. The subscription box that I would REALLY love to see is a FOCUSED subscription box. For example, a colored pencil subscription box.....they would include 6 colored pencils in the first box along with 3 pre-printed drawings on good quality colored pencil paper. The drawings would range from simple to more complex, so that you could build your confidence with each one. They could also include a few more sheets of the paper that would be blank so you could draw your own artwork or maybe trace the other drawings if you wanted to do a sketch more than once. Obviously a project book with tips. And a good sharpener. Then next month could be 3-6 more pencils different colors and maybe a different manufacturer, but the new projects use the new colors AND the colors from the previous box. This way you could see over time which brand of colored pencil you might favor and why. The boxes would also include ONE other supply (an eraser, a white gel pen, maybe black paper, etc) and instructions on how to use it. The point is to grow your collection slowly....small monthly investment, but supplies that build on what you may really want to focus on. Maybe you could even specify the brand of pencil that you would like to try, so you would get that same brand every month. The same thing could be done with watercolors, alcohol markers, waterbrush markers, watercolor pencils, pastels, etc. At the end of a year you would have a pretty good collection of whatever media you wanted to try. I would CERTAINLY subscribe!

Good idea!
I love LocTite glue. Great for making jewelry and assemblage art. It'll hold all kinds of things together, like and unlike. It was terrific in my polymer clay days. :)

Great point!
You are always so thoughtful and trying to see the positive side of everything. I am not in the target demographic of this kit, after seeing the contents. It would be great, as you say, for busy mothers so they don't need to go shopping for supplies or coming up with projects. Thanks, Lindsay!
One of my hobbies involves supergluing plastic figures together. I was complaining to a friend about how frustrating I was finding this and they recommended that glue. So much easier to work with than others I had tried!
It's definitely a great kit if you have kids ! 🙂
This is a great idea. In my city we have an art reuse store almost like a thrift store. I actually found unused winsor and newton oil paint for $2 a tube.

Sounds great!
This is a fantastic review! Thank you Lindsay! Thank you for your HONEST REVIEW & better clarification on who could really benefit from a box like this and who would be underwhelmed. *THANK YOU FOR REMAINING A TRULY TRUSTED CREATIVE CREATOR!!!* As a life-long crafter, I've purchased more than my fair share of 'art boxes'... Many, after reviews from 'trusted' KZread creatives. (or should I say, formerly trusted KZreadrs) There were a few that were just insulting, even 5yr olds would be like 'seriously? $45 for a little box of play dough, $-🌳 crayons, markers & stickers? I don't think so!' There were also a few that did the good ol' bait & switch... starting out strong & appealing but very quickly dropped the quality AND quantity of items sent. I have found a couple boxes created for experienced resin artists, BY experienced resin artists. They're pricey but well worth it bc they often teach a new technique I can apply to other areas of resin and, well, resin is expensive!!!

I'm not blaming the content creators for issues w the sellers but there have been a couple that were clearly giving the box positive reviews bc they got it for free. I'm also not saying I'm better than -beginners boxes! They ABSOLUTELY serve a great purpose; they just don't speak to me any longer. So thank you for putting it onto perspective as to who would thrive w this bc I like the concept, I'd just no love suits my needs and THAT'S OK!!! THANK YOU AGAIN LINDSAY!!!

Glas it was helpful!
This is so good, what a fun kit ☺☺
This looks really fun to do. Loctite glue is commonly in manufacturing assembly lines, they have some that are medical grade used in medical devices. Really good glue.
That glue is really cool This box is definitely a fun gift for the family.
Hullo Lindsay, I have not found a subscription box that I felt like I could not live without! I have purchased several previous boxes from Scrawlrbox and Artful too! I am just not excited about art supplies as a surprise. I am just so critical of what I am going to use in my art creations! I have purchased most all of Jazza’s boxes and they are chock full of quality supplies for the price! But you know what you are getting before you buy! I will even say the NerdECrafter Boxes are also amazing boxes. These boxes are not monthly subscriptions. Perhaps this is why they are more value for my money spent! Oh! I just saw a post from France! Thank you for sharing a bit of your experience with us on Instagram! I know that there are many people who are looking for a video from you about this trip! I have hopes for a flip through of your projects or even a slide show of inspirational ideas VIA pictures? See us soon!

Great review of the box and its projects, thank you. It seems a bit pricey for what you receive; however it's a super idea and I love the mini rose 🥰

Thank you for going into this kit. It seems expensive, and the packaging/presentation doesn't make up for it. I'm not a crafter, though, so it just might be my lack of excitement.

You’re welcome 😊
I’m just not into art subscription boxes (really, any subscription boxes)- I’m too particular about what I like and what I don’t like. I’m also a big deal hunter and the price tags scare me away.

It's hard to get the value out of a box unless it's coming directly from a manufacturer I think.
What a great idea! I cannot stand waste. I like the wood comb for the macrame'. I did a whole lot of macrame' in the 70's. I could have used that comb! I bought collapsible scissors 45 years ago. I still have them. It is nice to see they still make them. It is time to have boxes like this. I have seen other boxes. This would be good for people with kids. A little something to make without having all those leftovers.

Neat kit. Would have been fun when my son was little. Not sure I could have afforded it when he was young though.

I think so too!
the markers look like the GuangNa markers - I think they do white labelling. I love my GuangNas!
Seems very expensive for what you get. 🤷♀
🙂
For over $50, it seems a bit junky in my opinion, maybe i just like a cleaner aestetic.
Meh! Not worth it & pretty much just junk
