This week on Stay Tuned, a feller from Vice Grip Garage stops by to hang out at the Stay Tuned shop! Tony Angelo and Derek Bieri play a little gameshow called "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?!" where they guess list pricing on Facebook Marketplace ads chosen at random. TONS of fun was had, cold snacks consumed, and we really show that the market is the WILD WEST! Check it out on STAY TUNED!

I bought a complete and(kinda) running 2dr '69 Nova with a 307/th350 for $600 in 1992. It was the quintessential grandma car with a bench seat but power steering/power disk brakes and ZERO rust or rot. There was only 1 tiny rip in the headliner. I built a 327 for it, swapped in a 4.10 8.5 from a '74, installed buckets with a console and floor shifter before having it repainted in the body shop at my HS. I sold that car for $3K and used $2500 to buy a 402/4 speed '71 Camaro SS with a bad cam/lifter. Looking back at the cars I had and what I let them go for vs what they might sell for today is depressing. The Nova, the Camaro, an SVO Mustang, an '86 notchback with an Incon TT 331 stroker.... People are asking $5K+ for malaise era Nova rollers with rotted floor pans and often more for ragged out twisted to hell fox bodies with no interiors. No wonder kids are building FWD imports.

@@BruceLee-xn3nn My HS parking lot was packed with cheap early-late 70's muscle and pony cars in the 90's. There was my Nova, a '72 R Code Mach I, a '71 Monte, at least 2 dusters and a Scamp that I remember along with a bunch of later second gen F bodies. Not a 6 cylinder or quiet exhaust in the bunch. I know several classmates that cracked up their cars and within a week found another car for $5-600 that they could swap their drivetrain into. Those were the days....

For you young bucks, just to put prices in context, heres a few cars that I bought between 1974 and 1980. 1970 Nova, dark blue, no rust, 350, TH350, 2 door, vinyl top, buckets and a console, $300. 63 Impala, white, no rust, bored and stroked 327 and a powerglide, Torq Thrusts on G-60's, red interior buckets and console, traded straight up for the Nova. 68 Roadrunner, red w/flat black stripes on the hood, no rust, 383 Magnum, 727 trans, bench seat, column shift, dog dish hubcaps, posi rear, $300. 68 Chevelle 2 door, torquoise, white interior with buckets and console, 307 auto, N-50's on Vector mags,$300. 69 Chevelle, dark blue, 350/350, little bondo in the rockers, slotted mags and l-60's, $400. 66 Corvair Monza, yellow, manual trans, buckets, $200. 73 Dodge Charger, red, white vinyl top, 318 auto, no rust, $350. 74 Econoline van, 302 4 bbl, C6, floor shifter, psychedelic paint job and typical 70's shaggin wagon interior, $500. 66 Plymouth Sport Fury, gold, 2 door, only 20k on the odometer, spotless inside and out, 318 auto, white vinyl top, $400. GMC 1 ton dually flatbed, red, 350, 4 bbl, 4 speed manual w/granny gear, 9' flatbed, no rust, $700. 1950 panhead in a modified trike frame, non-running, but complete, $500. Oh yeah, I had 75 and 77 Camaros too, around 84. Oh, and in 86 I picked up a 57 Chevy Belair, orange and white, 4 speed 283 for a grand. These are just a few of the great deals around back then. To put this in perspective, I was only making $300-$400/week as a landscaper back then. So one weeks pay could get you a nice quality musclecar , decent truck or van. Try that today. I burned through about 30 cars, trucks, and vans by the time I was 30 years old and have had about 25 more since then. I feel sorry for you young guys. You'll be old guys before you can afford the awesome cars we drove in the 70's and 80's.

None of us were ready for the day when old cars just jumped from being $1500 to being $15,000 ... But it happened and it put us out of business with the restoration aspect. I never ever never ever NEVER thought I'd see the day when the stripped out, snot green, four door, six cylinder Whatsit that the nuns down at the convent used as a grocery getter, would be considered "a classic" and carry a price tag of $25,000.00 Never. Two of my favorites right here!!! Prices are insane!! I picked up my 69 gto back in 92' for 3500.00😮😮😮😮 it was clean and ran good and looked quite good, not a rusted out pile, had very very little rust. We picked up my dads 67' pontiac lemans for 600.00 in mid 90's from st vincent de Paul. Was owned by one lady until she passed away. Was 💯 % original with 326 and a 2 speed, white with black vinyl top and black interior and had 90k original miles, had a pencil dot of rust under vinyl top and was very solid. During resto i found change from 67' under back seat and the build sheet...so cool! Ended up with a jim butler 474 stroker with 600 plus horse and a th400 along with a 12 bolt, ran 10's and was a beast!! You guy's 🪨!!!!

Here in New York it has been 35 or more years since car prices went insane!! In 1989 I met a guy in Newark Valley New York, who was trying to sell a 1965 Mustang sitting in a field with an inline 6 cylinder, and had been off the road since 1975 for $22,000!! AND there wasn't even a straight panel on the car!! I met another guy, in Owego NY selling a 1963 Buick Station wagon, in 2009, that had been off the road for 30 years, had a broken frame who was asking $35,000 for his car too!! My point is there is no shortage around here of people assuming "Junk" is worth wildly more than what it is actually worth!! And every guy in my area thinks they have a "rare car" just because it is over ten years old!!

FYI. RUPP Grand Prix's restored with the correct engines routinely sell for $8,000-$10,000, with the twin engines being in the higher price range. I think if you had the skills to restore, and could buy this for $3000 and do the rest of the resto yourself to a high level of quality, you could make $3000. IF you just pay to have everything done, at that price, plus all the work you'll have done, you will end up with just as much in it as the cost to buy one already restored. The issue I had with the price is hat the entire front end looks wrong for a 1962 RUPP. It looks like something has been Frankensteined there. Which means more money to make it original. I think that is what makes it overpriced. For the extra work and parts that the front end would need to be correct, the $1600 is probably closer to the true value.

Since then I've seen hot garbage darts that probably wouldn't make it on the trailer without falling apart for up to 8000.
