I think it would’ve been if Charlie had stayed on the show. You can tell they had to change up a lot when Walden came in. I think Alan’s character would’ve stood up for himself more and actually had more success in life if Charlie was still there.

1. Living a number of years at Charlie's Malibu beach house rent free and barely paying for food. 2. His mother paying thousands of dollars for his doctor's degree without him ever paying it back and him trying to avoid her as much as possible. 3. Marrying the first two women that gave him any attention with both resulting in divorces 4. Burning down one of his partner's houses and never doing anything to trully pay her back 5. Using Charlie's beach house as a way to lure in women 6. Being a hopeless father that tries to make his son be a mirror image of himself (Pushing him towards a hopeless future) 7. Always disrespecting Charlie for his lifestyle (even though he is much more successful than him and took him into his home) 8. When Charlie 'died' he was more worried by him being removed from his house than his brother's death And so much more. There are multiple reasons for why people disrespect Alan, and most If not all of this disrespect is justified.

1. It is Charlie's fault he is living there in the first place. 2. His mother is one of the worst and most toxic people on the show. She is the reason Charlie and Alan are such flawed characters. 3. Ngl that was pretty stupid (especially kandi). But he had a long marriage with Judith and in the end it was Charlie's fault that he ended up with nothing. 4. It was an accident and she probably had insurance anyway. 5. Wouldn't you? 6. He's not a hopeless father. He wants what is best for Jake. I can't think of any moment in the show where Alan mistreats Jake. And caring about your sons education is not a bad thing. 7. Charlie is a man-whore and his lifestyle literally get's him killed. Whilst both are definitely not good people, Alan is a more morally good character than Charlie. 8. He literally shows he misses his brother like when Walden sells the piano. And wouldn't you be worried about becoming homeless? Alan is not perfect. He has tendencies to be pathetic, self destructive and stupid. But he remains one of the more "good" characters on the show and doesn't deserve most of the things that happen to him.
