Dan Forshaw is one of the most passionate and charismatic musicians on the British Jazz scene. Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, Dan studied in both London and New York and has played all over the world with many different ensembles ranging from jazz quartet’s to cathedral choirs. He is one of the UK’s leading experts on John Coltrane and has written a number of published articles on the music and theology of ‘Trane’. Tim Price, Professor of saxophone in New York and a former teacher of Dan said, ‘Forshaw has reached a strong level of musicality, depth and technique that very few players have….he is a breath of fresh air, ‘hear him!’
Fleetwood & First GigsDan grew up in the small Lancashire fishing town of Fleetwood. Opera star Alfie Boe lived a few doors away from Dan and music was a big part of Dan’s childhood. In his youth he performed for Royalty, U.S. President Bill Clinton and for the opening of Tony Blair’s first conference as Prime Minister!
Dan was taught by Ray Wilkes, a legend on the Northern Jazz scene and a former member of Cedar Walton’s band in New York. Dan started picking up gigs aged 14 and by 16 Dan was on the road with the ‘Amazing Blues Brothers Soul Revue Tour.’
New York, London & BelfastAfter meeting Branford Marsalis at the RNCM in April 2003, Branford invited Dan to study with him in the USA, which Dan did in March / April 2005. Whilst in New York, Dan was inspired by the many amazing musicians he heard & upon returning to England, he moved to London in the summer of 2005. Dan’s target was to return to New York, but meeting and marrying his wife Katy led to a move to Belfast in 2007.
Cambridge and beyond…Dan is now based in Cambridge where he teaches saxophone through his award-winning website, Cambridge Saxophone.com. Dan still maintains an active performance schedule with regular tours, residences and his ‘Jazz Vespers‘ project, that has seen Dan on Prime Time National TV, (BBC One,) leading jazz events at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ely Cathedral and the at new home for Jazz Vespers in London, Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.
Dan is an active ‘Vlogger’, (his KZread channel now has over 7500 subscribers in twenty countries), and he enjoys photography, sport and most of all spending time with his young family.

I’m sure his student made his decision by now but for anyone interested in a MK VI, forget about the serial numbers and just play test as many as you can before purchase. I play on a 1973 MK VI alto and it beat out multiple 5 digits, Sanborn 140 serial range etc. so just play test them and see which one speaks to you.

not a fan of the chrome or silver keywork on gold lacquer. Over youtube, I did like the mid register and high register on the one you liked. Fun times...

There was no Mark V. I read the MKVI was so named was because it was the sixth design of Saxophone that Selmer Paris made (and Selmer USA made the MKVI too), although that isn't true, it is actually the seventh, so it should have been called the MKVII and the MKVII should be the MKVIII. Going by the list of saxophone series Selmer Paris made before the MKVI on an information sheet I got with my Selmer mouthpiece: 1. Model 22: 1922, 2. Model 26: 1926, 3. Cigar Cutter: 1930, 4. Radio Improved: 1934, 5. Balanced Action: 1936, 6. Super Action: 1948 and 7. Mark VI: 1954

@@DynamixWarePro thank you. I know my brothers selmer tenor markVI is from paris and from the late fifties or early sixties. His first selmer was an alto my dad bought new in the early sixties (1954?).quite beautifu! Thanks for the info....he also had beautiful old conn from the late twenties according to the paperwork in beautiful condition. Charles Lloyd bought it after his was stolen. This was all in the early nineties. I believe he is still playing that horn. I loved the sound of the conn. We saw charles backstage after a concert in 1992 in berkley california and my brother asked charles what he thought of the selmer ( which he played before buying my brothers conn) and he said the're like playing a typewriter!...Ha! I guess charles comes more from lester young ( bending notes and tones) than coltrane or shorter. Thought that was an interesting comment. There is a live youtube video from europe in the early nineties where charles is playing a selmer markVI and his sound is a little different (harder and stronger) I still have my late brothers selmer tenor ( with otto link#7) mouthpiece which i treasure very much. Have subscribed to your channel.Thank you Dan!

Wow ! I'd love to know if anyone pays that for them ! Errr.. I actually have two five digit altos ( Both with silver plated keys ) that at some point I'll be selling along with some other horns that I'm slowly expatriating from Paris to the UK. It's going to take me another year at least to do. Two horns at a time and hoping that Brexit doesn't throw a spanner in the mix ! I'm in North London from tomorrow for a few days if ever your student wants to come and have a play ? No worries either way. I'll let you know when all my horns are UK based and maybe you can come and have a blow !
