Dan Forshaw is one of the most passionate and charismatic musicians on the British Jazz scene. Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, Dan studied in both London and New York and has played all over the world with many different ensembles ranging from jazz quartet’s to cathedral choirs. He is one of the UK’s leading experts on John Coltrane and has written a number of published articles on the music and theology of ‘Trane’. Tim Price, Professor of saxophone in New York and a former teacher of Dan said, ‘Forshaw has reached a strong level of musicality, depth and technique that very few players have….he is a breath of fresh air, ‘hear him!’
Fleetwood & First GigsDan grew up in the small Lancashire fishing town of Fleetwood. Opera star Alfie Boe lived a few doors away from Dan and music was a big part of Dan’s childhood. In his youth he performed for Royalty, U.S. President Bill Clinton and for the opening of Tony Blair’s first conference as Prime Minister!
Dan was taught by Ray Wilkes, a legend on the Northern Jazz scene and a former member of Cedar Walton’s band in New York. Dan started picking up gigs aged 14 and by 16 Dan was on the road with the ‘Amazing Blues Brothers Soul Revue Tour.’
New York, London & BelfastAfter meeting Branford Marsalis at the RNCM in April 2003, Branford invited Dan to study with him in the USA, which Dan did in March / April 2005. Whilst in New York, Dan was inspired by the many amazing musicians he heard & upon returning to England, he moved to London in the summer of 2005. Dan’s target was to return to New York, but meeting and marrying his wife Katy led to a move to Belfast in 2007.
Cambridge and beyond…Dan is now based in Cambridge where he teaches saxophone through his award-winning website, Cambridge Saxophone.com. Dan still maintains an active performance schedule with regular tours, residences and his ‘Jazz Vespers‘ project, that has seen Dan on Prime Time National TV, (BBC One,) leading jazz events at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ely Cathedral and the at new home for Jazz Vespers in London, Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.
Dan is an active ‘Vlogger’, (his KZread channel now has over 8000 subscribers in twenty countries), and he enjoys photography, sport and most of all spending time with his young family.

I call foul!! SYOS are unfairly using science, paying meticulous attention to quality control, and really listening to feedback from their customers. That's not how saxophone mouthpieces are supposed to work. Saxophone mouthpieces work by myth, legend and whisper - manufactures decide what a good sound is and then, by the unquestionable honesty of the marketing department, tell you that you can acquire it on easy terms - and that the more you pay the better it is. Don't believe hypes that if it plays great and sounds fantastic then it's better than a vintage rarity, or an expensive recreation, even if that bruises your lip and makes your nose bleed. That' just what them pesky scientists want you to believe! Yeah, sorry, I've got a SYOS on my tenor. No more nose bleeds for me! 🎷

Science wins and I just bought a soprano Syos a couple of days ago to see if it can beat my Selmer Super Session E and my Phil Tone Sapphire .067. If it does I may get fully bespoke Syos for my tenor & alto. Thanks for your review Dan 👍🏼🍀🎷

For a few of the tests I was close to being 50% 50% as I liked both mouthpieces for different reasons, especially in the last test, which in the end I went for the SYOS. It has at bit brighter more focused sound and it was a little more mellow than the D'addario which was a bit darker with more spread sound. I think maybe not just voting but having a survey and asking people why they liked one over the other in tests might help explain why certain mouthpieces would do better than others. If you are doing Alto and Soprano mouthpiece tests in the future, see if you can get JodyJazz mouthpieces, Selmer S80 and S90 in wider tips (E,F,G or H), Meyer or maybe even a Theo Wanne mouthpiece if you can.

Suggestion for next time: I appreciate that you made it clear from the start that this was unscientific, but try finding a voting method to allow people to rank the mouthpeices themselves and add up those ranks. For example, someone could have preferred both the syos DF and the sig to the D'Addario, but the way you had it set up they were forced to pick one or the other, and then one they preferred less. All that said, I still enjoyed this series thouroughly!

I agree on ranking system as there were times I liked both mouthpieces in the test, but for different reasons and it was hard to pick one more than the other. In the last test, I was almost 50% 50% on liking both.

Hi Nat I understand your comment, but I made it clear this was always going to be a shootout, one mouthpiece against the other like Mkhb did in his smart phone test. The team that wins the FA cup is not always the team that wins the league.

I don't speak soccer/football but I get what you're saying. This is a problem I have with most sports that use brackets, and my intent was not to discredit your series as I thouroughly enjoyed it. It was intended as a suggestion should there be a next time that you are obviously free to ignore.

Yes Eli Wyatt. And this is why the SYOS won. Most big chamber, big baffle Link types are somehow the holy grail. But in all, not many can play these pieces. And why should they? It is a common mistake that "you should buy a Link Tone Edge and learn how to get your own sound". I never understood this... Most play Link type pieces - and have a spread, harsh sound, with no core and warmth. That is a shame. Of course some can play fantastic on Link. But most cannot....
