Dan Forshaw is one of the most passionate and charismatic musicians on the British Jazz scene. Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, Dan studied in both London and New York and has played all over the world with many different ensembles ranging from jazz quartet’s to cathedral choirs. He is one of the UK’s leading experts on John Coltrane and has written a number of published articles on the music and theology of ‘Trane’. Tim Price, Professor of saxophone in New York and a former teacher of Dan said, ‘Forshaw has reached a strong level of musicality, depth and technique that very few players have….he is a breath of fresh air, ‘hear him!’
Dan grew up in the small Lancashire fishing town of Fleetwood. Opera star Alfie Boe lived a few doors away from Dan and music was a big part of Dan’s childhood. In his youth he performed for Royalty, U.S. President Bill Clinton and for the opening of Tony Blair’s first conference as Prime Minister! Dan was taught by Ray Wilkes, a legend on the Northern Jazz scene and a former member of Cedar Walton’s band in New York. Dan started picking up gigs aged 14 and by 16 Dan was on the road with the ‘Amazing Blues Brothers Soul Revue Tour.’
After meeting Branford Marsalis at the RNCM in April 2003, Branford invited Dan to study with him in the USA, which Dan did in March / April 2005. Whilst in New York, Dan was inspired by the many amazing musicians he heard & upon returning to England, he moved to London in the summer of 2005. Dan’s target was to return to New York, but meeting and marrying his wife Katy led to a move to Belfast in 2007.
Cambridge and beyond…Dan is now based in Cambridge where he teaches saxophone through his award-winning website, Cambridge Saxophone.com. Dan still maintains an active performance schedule with regular tours, residences and his ‘Jazz Vespers‘ project, that has seen Dan on Prime Time National TV, (BBC One,) leading jazz events at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ely Cathedral and the at new home for Jazz Vespers in London, Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.
Dan is an active ‘Vlogger’, (his KZread channel now has over 8000 subscribers in twenty countries), and he enjoys photography, sport and most of all spending time with his young family.

Dan, lovin’ your video reviews on mouthpieces and other sax geek stuff. I mostly play alto (Yamaha custom EX), but I do enjoy playing tenor a lot. I play a CE Winds tenor, sadly they stopped production within the past year, but I landed a gem with this tenor! Keep on swingin!

On the alto player's front, it had to be Paul Desmond for me, I grew up being force fed Dave Brubeck Quartet tunes by my grandfather

I play Selmer Series II alto, Series III tenor & soprano. Bought a Syos soprano mpc and love the way it plays vs a Super Session E or my Phil Tone Sapphire .067. I only think Syos should perfect its mpc finish, it’s currently too approximative. Thank you Dan for yet another great vlog

I’m a tenor and Bari player and I am buying a soprano sax this year!! I also play clarinet too. I’m getting a clarinet in the key of A which despite it not being a jazz instrument I feel it’s darker tone could work well in a jazz band

I’ve played tenor, alto and soprano for60 years. Tenor is my preference. I use Jody jazz jet on a Yamaha Z82 tenor. A Morgan fry super vintage on my Ref.36 Flamingo without top F# and Aizen on my soprano. Vandoren on my Ref.54 alto.

Alto and Soprano - has been much more alto but getting back to soprano as I love it’s pure sound.

That Syos mouthpiece sounds bright, a bit sweet and could really cut through but I don't think I like it as much as your tenor or soprano mouthpieces. Since you said it's more open than you would normally play, have you tried a slightly softer reed on it? Maybe that might help the low and high notes come out better?

Hey Dan ! Great vlog as usual. Loads of stuff in there. Re the anytune pro app. I really liked it at first but eventually found it a bit too clunky and show offy. Have since switched to the amazing slow downer app, that I find much simpler and intuitive to use and it links directly to my Spotify account which is great as I can hear some random lick or whatever, by who ever and then access it on the app and immediately slow it down. Not sure the anytune app has that possible link ?

I've always considered myself an alto owner rather than an alto player - partly because I just don't have 'a sound' on the instrument. I get by bluffing it, but if I could sound like anyone it would probably be Lee Konitz.

Mainly tenor and sop. Occasionally a bit of 'nino. Bari and alto get neglected. Bit of a love hate relationship with the alto, partly because I get so sharp on it top end. Contemplating a SYOS large chamber mouthpiece to see if it helps with that.

Sounds bright and it really cuts through. Seems like you would be better served with something not so open...especially where you don’t play too much. Open is harder to control.

Compared to your tenor mpc it sounds like if you are using the wrong reed
