SYOS have quickly made a name for themselves in the saxophone world for their revolutionary 3D printed mouthpieces made from lightweight ABS plastic. But, are these premium mouthpieces (with a premium price tag) suitable for a beginner?
SYOS have kindly sent me 4 mouthpieces to review that they believe are a perfect fit for early stage saxophone players.
These mouthpieces are:
John Aaron Troy Signature Alto Sax (6)
Jimmy Sax Signature Alto Sax (6)
Sylvain Rifflet Signature Tenor Sax (6*)
Daro Behroozi Signature Tenor Sax (7)
In this video Jeremy shares his thoughts about SYOS, reviews these mouthpieces and gives each one a thorough playtest so you can compare the tone before you buy.

Hi Jeremy. It would depend on what I was playing: Jazz, Motown, Reggae or Pop.

I've been thinking about starting to play saxophone again (after about 15 years away from it for various reasons) just for fun, and started watching some of your videos to help me think about what to buy. Particularly important as I'm thinking about moving away from alto (which I used to play, but don't have one anymore) and picking up the challenge of a soprano - it'll be harder to learn, but I'm not in a rush to play well. I'm now watching all of your videos purely because they're so well put together - good pacing, with clear and concise information which is presented in a way that is easy to follow, and just a joy to hear you talking about the sax.

I really enjoy your content and your laid back, easy going & friendly style. I just have a small quibble in that there was an obvious reverb effect on the mouthpiece test (which was even possible to hear when you were talking) it didn't detract too much from the sound but it is still a bit distracting. It's great to hear a rundown of these SYOS mouthpieces though. I'm quite curious about them.

Many thanks for this vital video. I had my Alto sax sent away for servicing - re-rubbered etc. When it came back, I could hardly get a good note out of it. I sent it back. However, after watching a couple of your videos this week, I'm thinking that perhaps it has more to do with the MOUTHPIECE and REED (Roco 1.2). I sent an email to SYOS today (Thurs 23.09.2021). Owning a sex seems to be an expensive business once you start getting serious with it... but well worth it!!. Kind regards once again.

Hey Stephany, that’s really strange! Unless the repairer did an awful job the service shouldn’t have made the sax unplayable. By the same token, the SYOS mouthpieces (whilst they do sound great) won’t fix any major issues you have with your sax. You should still be able to get consistent tone out of a really cheap mouthpiece. Certainly the reed could play a factor however. Perhaps just double check you’ve set up your mouthpiece and reed correctly (shown in Lesson 1) and if you’re still having issues contact me through the SaxTuition website and I’ll try to diagnose the problem for you. All the best!

@@SaxTuition Hi. Many thanks for your reply and kind suggestions. The sax is still at the "menders" - waiting collection, if I can get to it as UK is having issues with PETROL right now. Many thanks. God Bless.

Hey! I have never ever heard of saxophone playing causing a hernia 😊 I’m obviously not a doctor, but I can’t imagine saxophone playing causing enough back pressure to cause a hernia.. hope that helps!

Have you tried these mouthpieces with other ligatures? If you have played on these mouthpieces with different ligatures, is the sound different?

  • @SaxTuition

Hey there, I haven't experimented with other ligatures on these SYOS mouthpieces yet, but generally they only have a minor impact on the sound. There are some good ligature comparison videos on KZread if you want to get a sense for how much they can/can't affect the tone :)
