This is why I love Mark Kermode. You honestly never know what to expect from him. The guy calls it like he sees it, and he doesn't feel the need to apologize for enjoying movies that either you or I might think are complete rubbish. I severerly dislike Twilight (both the book and the movie- take your pick) but I thought his review was great. He gets the target audience, and he gets the appeal. The guy is a riot, and I love listening to his reviews , even the ones I don't agree with.

"The background - the hard work - I can do and you can join in with the fluff." Quotes like this are the reason I've grown to love Kermode so much. What a badass.

@missoujei I do agree in some ways but he is trying to protect her. To be fair the only suicide he threatens her with is his own & thats only in response to her death. He does effectively isolate her by not telling her to hang out with people like Jess, Angela, Mike, Eric etc. but he's not doing it deliberately. He's not trying to hurt her, just trying to make her happy.

@missoujei I would say I'm probably on the same side as kermode on this. I love the concept of the story and themes etc. rather than the actual characters etc. In the books, I think I would fall for Edward but in the movie version, I don't think I would. I doubt I would fall for Jacob in either version.

He sidetracks what the massive issue in the film actually is, and that is the fact that the three main characters are so wooden at the best of times, and angsty and sulky and frustrating to watch at the best of times. Even the clip annoyed me.

@missoujei Its true love in the sense that they can't live without each other. Whether its a healthy relationship is another thing entirely. At the end of breaking dawn once they're both vamps, I think it is a healthy relationship. TBH, I think its whats interesting about the story in that what would you do for love? Would you love a vampire? would you become a vampire for him? Would you fall for a werewolf, knowing you don't have to change for him? etc.

I loved "Near Dark" and it was in my top 300 favorite movies, but has fallen off the list. It is a great vampire movie for having a vampire who refuses to kill (concept of "Interview with the Vampire) and actually ends up with a method of reversing vampirism (in the Ann Rice series of books if you read enough of them) and ending with the man saving a girl from being a vampire to be a mortal love. I have no idea where it would fall now, but certainly in the top 300 to 350 movies of all the movies I've ever seen. "Let the Right One In" is the best vampire movie and "Interview with the Vampire" is the second best vampire movie. Dracula is #3 with Bela Lugosi, who captured my imagination as a child, and was what I always wanted to be for Halloween instead of a clown, and my favorite aunt Vera made me a vampire outfit that I then wore the rest of my childhood while "trick or treating." "Near Dark" would be under all these: 5) Let the Right One In (2008) - Swedish with English caption 27) Interview with the Vampire (1994) 73) Dracula (1931) 80) Nosferatu (1922) 240) Shadow of the Vampire (2000) 290) Hunger (1983) "Near Dark" would beat the Winona Ryder movie from 1992 called "Bram Stoker's Dracula," which would fall under it, but I do love Winona Ryder as an actress.

@missoujei is it really emotional blackmail? How does he blackmail Bella by saying don't die or I'll kill myself. Most people don't want to die at any rate. TBH, its unhealthy in the fact that a human is after a vampire and that if they get intimate, he might accidentally kill her or turn her into a vampire. I agree - none of the characters are great. Bella emotionally blackmails Edward in Eclipse to stay away from the fight.

I saw the original Twilight the week it was released and i really enjoyed it....the only reason i can think of for why people put it down.,..is because of what followed the films success...13 year old girls swooning over hunky movie stars....i just find it sad that people dont want to be associated with that so much that they end up disliking the film

But I'd still say it was crap and boring, and it's really cheesy. You can't just generalise that all men hate romance and that's why we dislike it, it's just that men aren't affected by the soppy side of it, and it's therefore easy for us to see what a bad movie it is...

There is some good work put into the film. It has a nice atmosphere, and it takes itself serious enough that it can draw you in to some scenes. The story is meh, and the sparkling vampires is not cool. But the only truly unforgivable thing is Kristen Stewart's acting. Having not read the books I don't know if the character is supposed to be that twitchy and annoying, but I've seen her in other roles and it was the exact same mess. Edward was done alright, and Bella's father was quite good.

While I do not agree with these two actions that does not lesson him in my opinion since he writes epic books. What's more while I agree Mormon belief if taken literally is ridiculous they still attempt to do good, as do Christians despite their holy book being ridiculous, they don't take it literally they interpret.

I'm a girl, I can tell you Twilight is a porn for girls as Transformers are for boys. I think older men think there's something sweet about the sexual longing and fantasy of a girl who's nervous about the actual thing, that's why they don't judge Twilight as harshly. You will also notice those who're most critical of the series are actually women.

However, despite the romance this is not all about a romance this is about conflicting hidden worlds, which have effects on any relationship developing, but at the centre of it, is a believable romance, with is driven by character development and an ever moving narrative

The two main characters had no personality - Bella was so horrible to everyone and so selfish. Why did I think it was so good before??
