Twilight: Breaking Dawn 1 reviewed by Mark Kermode

Ойын-сауық

I noticed that this great review was missing from our KZread archive. I slightly shortened it and added a nice podcast extra bit at the end.

I think this is a brilliant review and a showcasing of Mark's brilliance - his comparison with Star Wars is absolutely spot-on. People are unbelievably derisive about fangirl stuff and are completely orgasmic over fanboy stuff (e.g. Star Wars). My only disagreement with this is that: 1. I don't think his review reflects the dangerous undertone in this film around female dependency and the elements of the abusive relationship that appear. And 2. he needs to be far more critical over the way they wrote the Bella character in such a cardboard manner. I think overall though he was won-over by the fantastical element in all this....much like the Star Wars fans

TV movies vs one of the most iconic trilogies of all time? Kermode is a hack.

I liked both of them but yeah if men are fans of something it's a masterpiece but if something is liked by women it's shit

It makes me so happy that MARK KERMODE likes Twilight and "cried thrice" at my favourite of the films - what a refreshingly honest and unpretentious film critic he is!

"People sneer and snipe at it because they don't understand it." Now that's claptrap. I love Kermode, he's my favorite critic, but like most of his fans I'm also deeply baffled by his love for this despicable series. I do understand the films are made for the fans of the book, but saying that people who hate it don't "understand" it is just preposterous. Mark is clearly interested in the underlying ideas and themes the films have, but can those save them from thoroughly terrible acting? No. Can they save them from painfully bad dialogue and lack of character chemistry? No. Can they save them from an incomprehensibly dull plot and idiotic characters? No.

It's not just preposterous, it's pompous as well as presumptuous.

The only people who say they don't like it are those who are embarrassed to admit they do like it.

Well there you have it folks, and I've said it all Along, Twilight is a good. When it first came out I didn't even know it was a book, I was on one of those movie streaming sites and its description read that it was a vampire movie, so I watched it based on no hype and enjoyed it. I think its the hype and young fanbase of the series that has immediately put people off watching it or made people form opinions before watching it. I think its one of the stronger movie series out there

Hey seanbhoy, for some odd reason my HTC phone dosnt allow me to directly reply to s specific message, so ill just hope you read this. I personally find it kind of odd that you found the first half if twilight boring, because the first half of twilight is my favourite part of the entire series. It's the only segment with some mystery. After bella and Edward become close, everything is out in the open and this isn't a bad thing but certainly less mysterious

For context, Kermode was never that keen on Star Wars until The Force Awakens.

He does review films from the point of view of the demographic it’s aimed at. That’s fine, at least he’s not a film snob

The film is stylish, well directed & has great effects, however the film’s poorly acted, poorly written, poorly directed & is poorly characterised. (38%) (2/5 stars) (mixed)

I agree with Kermode on almost all his views of most films, but wow does he lose massive points with his opinion of this truly horrible series. Something is amiss here, maybe his daughter would disown him if he derided the films, but have I just entered the Twilight Zone (chortle!)!! And did he just compare it to the Star Wars series favourably?! Wow, just wow...Seriously someone slap some sense into him.

Mark has a point with Star Wars getting a pass for leaps in logic and faults with consistency more than Twilight, however, the REASON for that is the original classic trilogy revolutionized cinema and added a great element of pop culture phenomena to the world. It changed the face of marketing, merchandizing, storytelling, and even the way films are even made. Twilight contributes nothing, to anything, anywhere.

Actually thats not true, Twilight has opened a whole new avenue of young adult fantasy fiction. Without Twilight, we would not have The Hunger Games, or Fifty Shades, or the Maze Runner series. It has also allowed for both Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson to make their own mark on the acting world, and both have delivered some very fine performances throughout their career. If you hate Twilight..thats fine, but the films are influential in their own right.

I dont think Kermode is being fair about Twilight vs Star Wars...Twilight is so reviled because not only are they horrible, horrible movies, they are filled with dangerous messages about co-dependent and weak female characters that are open to abuse from men...its wretched, vile and worthless.
