I really like the father's hypocrisy, mainly for how realistic it is. Blame the main character all you want, but if YOU had been able to keep it in your pants none of this would've happened, dude. Ultimately, YOU are the cause of all the messes around you.

it's kinda sad that everyone blamed the main character for the death of the wife's mother. Calling him a monster when really he was just an an innocent baby and the product of his own father's infidelity. If anyone was the monster, it was the father for having an affair and then hiding his second child from his daughter.

That was actually the protagonist in his head. He Deemed himself the monster in his fantasy, and made himself the victim. Now the reasons why, idk there could be a multitude of reasons, it could be the slight morality he has left in his mind getting at him, or because he has an extreme victim complex he thinks everyone thinks he is a bad person

There is a separate ending where you don’t choose. He tells you to imagine a flower which may be the painting in the beginning. Also, the doors could symbolize the choices. The left is if he raises the child, and the right is if he leaves. If he doesn’t choose, the loop restarts again (middle door).

Also there so many clues that point out that this all in his head. There is no doorbell to his appartment but the cop always rings it once he arrives. Characters point out clues themselves or even help the player protagonist in such an Obvious way to do things right in the next loop. Such as the cop saying he only listens to his daughter , making you call his daughter next time. The wife's reactions to the thunder , light switch are also unnecessary but she still does it. Before dying by getting strangled the wife finally is about to tell where the watch is but it cuts out because you die just before. Non-canon endings include the husband either saving the day or getting his wife killed.

The thing is, all of that probably isn't true. The protagonist probably already knew he was her brother, and the father didn't even die in the first place. The loop is just a reality invented by the protagonist where he happily lives with his wife, a reality where his problems don't exist. And all the stuff about the nany and the father is just an excuse invented by him to remind him of the fact that he's her brother, since he forgot thanks to the father's hypnosis.

The game is very open to interpretation. The protagonist and the father could be the same person. i.e. when he says: 'it's all your fault' he's speaking to a projection of himself. The bizarre and terrible situation he's imagining may be a manifestation of his own guilt, and this journey is about ending his affair OR saying the hell with it and forgetting his past.

I personally think the watch is just there as a reminder if the room where he was talking to the father. he was facing towards the clock on the wall that had a striking similarity to the pocket watch which opened back up the memory of his conversation with who was presented as the father but as seen later it was not the father but it was the cop which is why the father and the cop have the same voice. He was presented as the father because when he was speaking in the true ending he said something along the lines of "if you do, remember this only in this way" which is an indication that he had hypnotized him to only remember him as the father instead of the cop.

I feel this story is very applicable to real life for a lot of people. Having such a traumatic experience in your past (be it family, (dad hating daughter, mum hating son) relationship, (wife/husband) death, (daughter having cancer) poverty (motive for watch). Everyone has gone through something in their past which they are constantly running away from to keep “sane”, the husband having had all these problems (growing up with no family, financial issues, no relationship) is constantly trying to imagine a world where he has each of these things in all the endings - good relationship with his father, a wife whom is partly his sister because he wish he had a family growing up and his soon to be daughter and being there for her (the role his mother didn’t have as she passed away during childbirth). No matter what world is imagined eventually it all comes crashing down by either leaving our safe place (home), waking up (killing ourself) or by someone intervening and crashing down our world (cop). The cop at the end is seen to be the therapist at the end of the game which in this scenario is someone crashing down each imaginary world as WE (the husband) are faced with the realisation that this isn’t real. Ultimately the only way to actually beat the game and achieve the final ending is by accepting the past which we had and by no longer running away from it but confronting it (the husband remembers his past and every event and finally comes to terms with it) and letting go. We end it by hugging our father, entering our safe space which is now cleared of all our false narratives we try to live by (empty apartment) except for one last thing, a watch which symbolises time. However it’s broken once we’ve let everything go which is to represent ourself and mental state when we let all go; all that we are left with is a broken watch with lost time essentially a useless item, but if you try and think back to the past events where the time on the watch is shown we can fix this broken watch and proceed to move on with our life (end game cutscene) which is symbolising how we can actually use our past and all the time we’ve spent thinking about these false narratives and use it as a lesson to help us progress in our own story. In short, don’t let your past problems way you down, don’t run away from it face it and use it to help yourself become the person you’re truly meant to be.

The whole thing is actually in the Husband's mind. I did not get that ending, but if you continue you get another ending where the father says he has an amazing imagination and power of creating these fantasies and needs to let the Wife go as she was just in his head. The first time you meet the father he has hair and he asks the Husband to leave his daughter which ultimately causes the father's death. But if you pay attention, the second time the Husband sees the Father, he is bald and he says his sister is pregnant with his baby. But that only happened 8 years after the Father's death which further tells us the Husband was imagining it all. Thats the shock the Father was talking about too. That is also the reason Willem Dafoe voiced both the Father and the Cop.

How about something common like Influenza, which have 9% annual infectivity rate. Compare that to 25% chance of faulty gene in an inbreeding. That 25% (at best) is a disastrous number of chances, which all doctors would agree to NOT even take. It's not guaranteed to lead to a deformity, but dear God it's monstrously risky. Even worse is that regular family have 2 childrens or more, which means it's a chance of 43% chance of a disaster to happen at least once. @@vysharra as I said in my original reply, "it's more unlikely, but there is a chance" Normal people also get cancer and, imagine for a moment if you will, that a grandparent of the husband and wife had cancer, even if treated, it would still give their children a higher chance of cancer (this of course not something we have any prove of, just an idea presented) My own mother had cancer and my younger sister has a different dad, who also has had cancer in his family. My sister has a higher risk of getting cancer. We are not inbred. Now image, as I stated above, that the grandparent had cancer. Now, no matter what, both the people in the couple has cancer in the family and therefore, the chances of their children having cancer is heightened and since the baby Dahlia is a result of incest, the chances are 2x I hope it makes sense and I'm not trying to say anything bad about you, I'm just trying to explain my thought pattern on this matter :) When the gene poll is smaller and if there is any cancer is the shared bloodline (or even on one single side, like if grandma Dahlia had cancer) there is naturally a higher chance of cancer spreading and not having a "cover up" gene

I think he goes through all these struggles and is put through a time loop as his hypnosis tries to make sense of his struggle to have family and the motif of trauma block to forget that he is the monster is a common get away for people who can't take responsibility for their actions. At the end, I didn't want to give up on the relationship and you fight the father to which the red book fell. I clued into that so the next loop, I clicked the red book on the bookshelf and quoted that special passage and the father went on with a monologue to which I wanted to gain information but it also lead to the credits. Seeing this video's ending honestly made me even more confused and I'm no longer further forward in my quest of gaining meaning. Lmao. • @RattlersPurple

For context, I grew up playing video games, beginning with the Atari 2600, and they have been a passion of mine my entire life. When I heard about this game, it registered on my radar (especially since Annapurna was involved) and I recognized that it looked interesting, but not enough to make me rush out and get it day one. Although I believe Game Pass is an amazing service (and deal), I just do not have the time to make it worth it. Last week (November 2022) I happened to catch that 12 Minutes was on sale and thought I would give it a try, which is why I am coming at this over a year after release. I did not read any reviews or watch any analysis videos before my first play through; however, I went deep into that arena after I was done with the game (i.e., experienced all the endings). Even though I have a strong stomach, I will admit that there were things about the game that initially disturbed me - things I did and things I learned that certainly did not make me feel good. Although I found some very interesting and insightful theories (yours included!), it never quite sat well with me and I found myself replaying and going over every little detail (the rings of the clock, whether the Father has hair or not in the library, when the paintings change, etc.) to try and definitively answer the question: Why did the developer, who has a reputation for producing fascinating experiences, craft this game in the way they did? Despite all the high concept theories, I still felt like something was missing. The theory I am about to propose finally donned on me as I was contemplating the absurdity of the situation where the only way to get the final twist is to show the Cop the onesie at the precisely correct moment. We as the player already know Husband's mother's name was Dahlia, and we know that Husband knows his own mother's name. Why the hell couldn’t he have just said that in that moment: "Wait, was her name Dahlia?" Why make us go through the trouble to figure out such an obtuse way of presenting this information? And then it hit me…. what if that was the developer's intent all along? What if the purpose of the experience was to develop a construct that would test how far YOU as the player, the one who is ultimately controlling the actions of the game character, would go to “finish the game”? We as gamers have been conditioned for decades to believe that games include a beginning ("Press Start") and a predetermined end - it is our job to figure out how to get there, and we typically enjoy doing so, which is ultimately why we love playing. Over and over and over again, this is what playing a video game boils down to. If my theory is correct, the brilliance of this game experience is that the plot and the disturbing twists and the horrific violence has nothing to do with the game world itself, but has all been crafted to see how far you are willing to go, how deep are you willing to dig, to do the one thing you think you are supposed to do in every game you play - finish the game. Think about all the awful things YOU did (drug your pregnant wife, torture and kill a man, use a man's cancer stricken daughter as a pawn, etc.); think about the horrific things you witnessed because of the actions YOU took (watching your pregnant wife be murdered and framed for suicide while you hide in a closet, watch your father die at your hand, etc.) ; think about how hard YOU had to work to figure out the obtuse puzzles to advance the plot (the light switch, the onesie, calling Bumblebee, etc.). And all for what? Only to discover that the climax of the plot is that your character killed his father and married and impregnated his sister? [borderline Oedipus complex, right?] All your trial and error, all the trauma you put yourself through, only to uncover an unquestionably disturbing revelation. It’s difficult to imagine a more horrific scenario, which I believe is the point. The whole thing is set up to challenge and punish you for your preconceived notions about what a video game is. Only by YOU choosing to advance the plot (and working extremely hard to do so) do you experience the atrocities and reveal the final abomination. Everybody seems to want to come down on the developers for trying to be "shocking" and that the puzzles were too obtuse and that the whole thing "doesn't pay off", but what they are forgetting is that THEY are the ones who chose to continue to go down that path. THEY are the ones who tried every crazy possibility and committed unspeakable atrocities to advance the plot. The developer did not force us to do these things - we chose to do them because we cannot help ourselves and we will do whatever it takes to “finish the game”. Don’t believe me? See what happens if YOU don’t touch the controller/mouse on your first loop...

Yo I just realized before you hear the cop you hear someone walking, when you look out of the peephole while this is happening you see no one in the hallway. My theory is that the person walking is on a higher floor and that is the future husband after he broke the thread of time. I know it seems like a odd theory but it might be true.

i feel bad for the main character and it hurt me with the wife's responses after the mc remembered and confessed to the wife the things he forgotten (or the things that the father wiped out by hypnotizing him I guess)

It’s an infinite time loop. The husband learns of the events and realizes he is the stepbrother. Then is transported to the past and enacted the past events that cause the future events.

I think a really cool ending could have been the man going back so far to be born from another woman, meeting the wife and then having a happy ending with the girl (who would not be his half sister this time)

So when i went back to the father he was bald with a beard just like the cop. Also i quoted the book to him and it ended with him telling man he could make him forget. He then gave a speach about focusing on the bud of a flower...

    1. How about the cop (actually not the cop, but the killer) being the father at the same time. 2. How does the woman thinks that she killed her father? What causes this? 3. As the protagonist, our guy gets the watch in the "alone" scenario but woman thinks that she gets the watch in all the other scenarios? I'm quite confused actually, if you could answer these clearly I'll be glad! Thanks for the painting information tho I haven't realised it until I watched your video.
