Tweeter aiming RTA measurements

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I am trying to find the best aiming angle for my tweeters in the conrers of the dash next to the midrange.

Thank you so much for making these videos.... For someone like me who doesnt know anyone who is running SQ its very hard to get a vision of how i am supposed to measure , setup, look for, and tune.... Very much appreciated and please keep making these videos

Past experience suggests aiming both tweeters at the interior side of your headrest. The reason for this aiming is due to on and off axis performance of your tweeters. Tweeters beam there sound/are more directional so off axis drop-off occurs. The far side tweeter should be aimed for on axis results, while the near field tweeter is off axis, but supported by window reflections , therefore the typical dip that occurs from being off axis is then supported by the reflections from the near field window. This results with the far tweeter being on axis with minimal driver side window reflections, and the near field tweeter being off axis(with the degradation is SPL) but with the window reflections building the SPL back up. Of course this is frequency/tweeter/environment/etc dependent as well. Maybe this can help Provide a starting point for someone getting started in car audio.

Would have liked to see both sides combined frequency response results. Then I think you could really see how the reflections effect the response. 🤷‍♂️ Great video though! Really appreciate the effort to help us CAR audiophiles! Keep up the great content!👍

Great experiment, you don't know how many times I begin to mount tweeters only to be like should I settle for different aiming or just go for the look. Andy at Audiofrog says put tweeters on axis and you pretty much backed that up and to me i feel i get all information that way out of the tweeters. Appreciate all your great work

man this is very interesting info you give us. Thank you! I will soon be making custom A-pillars for my polo and I wondered where to aim. Thought to aim the roof in the center initially.

Some actual scientific aiming other than theory. I aimed my tweeters towards the dome light, in pods (which also contain my mids) in the dash corners, and are within 15 degrees of axis for both front seats. I'm making new pods now (old ones didn't turn out a nice looking as I hoped) an I'll use some of your methods to aim the speakers for them. Thanks. I want to test Mids, on axis vs flat aiming up at the windshield, and tweeters in the pillars shooting right across the car, like some do and OEM do often)

As far as midrange I would rather have the extra db off the glass but I like also getting the direct on axis information from my mids.

@@RAW-CAt I agree. Sometimes theories and computer simulation are not the same as testing real world response. Same with subwoofer boxes.

Interesting, I have cups ordered to do the same type experiment with both the tweeter and mids. With a swivel mount for all four cups.

I've been looking for a similar way to mount and aim tweeters, this is like, perfect! Can I ask where you got those 360 swivels? what brand? I'm looking for ones that are as small as possible, I found some 32mm, but I wish it was about 13 mm shorter.. :D

So highest response wins because.... my take: more direct to room ratio. SBIR and where you perceive the source to be in LR space will affect your stage presentation of realism. So sometimes mainly driver side pointing a tad into the cabin reduces SBIR. Ps SBIR does show up in REW, looked a bit like comb filtering. It manifest as positional drift in where you think you hear a frequency come from. Can realy observe this by solo tweeter with slow bandpassed filter sweeps. Cheers - good vid.

Try temporary mount tweeters higher (probably that's why you have dip 7-8k), and try to aim them between headrest. Second option try both to aim to left ear. Did you buy umik1?

Hi @raw-cat. Do you think that looking at the spectral decay graph would help with driver aiming? Since reflections affect what we hear, aiming drivers to minimize reflections maybe a useful.

Spectral decay is not needed for that, RTA shows all the reflections.

@@RAW-CAt thank you for your reply. i dont know what beaming frequency is. i listen to a lot of reggae music. and usually on my pc system, i have the opposite of smile curve in my eq. bass is compulsory, mid where all the main instruments like from drums to sax trump guitars must come out. and the highs are always turned down. its like there is sunlight at noon and at evening. the evening sunlight is bright but barrable, not dark at all. while noon sunlight will cook ya. so bass up mid up highs moderately down.

Really? How is that? Waterfall shows ringing and resonances, that is frequency over time. RTA shows reflections as cancelations due to phase shift.
