I'm convinced that radio and record companies pay these shows to portray classical music like this in order to push this idea that classical is boring in order to further pop sales by pushing people away from other genres.

@@wiegraf9009 it took considerable effort to get them to _start_ listening to pop at the rates they do nowadays. It's all corporate strategy and subtle brainwashing and no that's not some kind of conspiracy theory, it's a known fact that pretty much every pop song is written by the same two people and produced by the same few teams. They use carefully targeted psychological tricks to get people hooked. The same chords, the same motifs, the same "themes", the same dreadful lyrics even sometimes. All because the brain likes familiarity, it makes it feel calm, thus making people more likely to seek more of the same thing out in the future AND in addition to that they don't give you a choice, which is why the same 5-10 songs are on repeat on the radio at different times of the day, that forces you to listen more, that programs you to like it, its basic psychology. If they're already putting that much effort in, why not add a little more just to kill the competition? I mean look at what happened to rock and classical. The only genre currently competing with pop is hip hop, and it's mostly because they use the same strategies, which is why I keep hearing trash like 6ix9ine instead of actually good rap like Eminem or Mike Shinoda and the like.

One way to make it on Got Talent: 0. Have an emotional story 1. Begin playing a classical piano piece until a judge or scripted audience member yawns 2. Stop for dramatic effect, allowing the judges and scripted audience to gasp 3. Kick the bench in a sudden fashion across the stage, and play the piece 3x as fast (bonus points if you dance whilst looking really intense) 4. Move on to the second round. 5. Repeat the process over again next round and be booted off from being boring.

I gotta be real, I absolutely hate when audiences give a standing ovation to mediocre performances.

I remember watching one if the AGT seasons recently, and they showed in one of the cut scenes, a kid practicing cello prelude number 1. It sounded very nice, and I was hoping to see his audition. I never saw it. He must’ve been one of those rare people who came to audition with actual talent and classical music. I can only imagine the amount of yawns in the audience, and the disrespect the judges must’ve gave him. Classical music is a thing yall, and it’s really cool if you just take a moment to actually listen to it instead of yawning. Give it a chance. Annddddd, I remember one of the kids who came on to play violin, and who ended up making it to the finals, the judges had said after his performance of a pop song (he was actually pretty good - he was also like 12) I expected you to come out here and play some boring music like ode to joy, but this was so much better. *cue applause*

The judges asking the violinist to audition again without the pianist is really scandalous, especially since she was standing right there, being told the reason the performance was bad was because of her. It was even reinforced again when the judges gave the now violin soloist a standing ovation even though her performance wasn't even better than their collaboration. If I was in her place, I would have come back up on stage and smashed their heads open. This sort of behaviour is exactly what schools try to discourage kids to do, yet the judges act like they are the ones who are right. To even have something like this on national television is absolutely unacceptable.

Even if it wasn't all scripted (I doubt that), when the duo resolved to do a piano and violin duet like that on TV, they should have just PRACTICED TO PLAY GOOD. When they can't even play decently on stage, I would not give even one of them a second chance. This scripted scene makes me wanna barf on those judges and producers. It's disgusting really.

I teach classical piano. I tell my student that learning / playing the notes is analogous to coming to an interview in a suit, tie, and resume. Those are the basics. Piano is way more than just the notes; there is so much going on you have to apply to those notes you press. You come to the interview w your suit and resume, but you get the job w your personal expression, character, qualifications, experience, and how you articulate.

How to impress any non-musical person: -Play super crazy fast even if there’s 1000 mistakes (they won’t notice) -Play with something that isn’t an instrument but sounds like one -Play something hip hop style -Be 2 months old Combine all of them and u MIGHT get into the second round of Britain’s got talent

But that doesn’t make them dumb, that’s all I meant, I never commented on the juries ability to judge (they’re also highly unsympathetic to me). When I was at school I had a go at playing the flute. Nope. Couldn't play it LOL Went straight back to my clarinet! The thing is most instruments are actually not to hard to make some semi-musical noises out of them that would impress some idiotic 'reality' TV host. To actually _play_ the instrument takes years of practise and a dedication to the art that these shows gloss over and treat as less then nothing. I stopped playing many years ago, something I regret now and just don't have the time to spare these days to relearn. Actually I can still play my clarinet but I can't read sheet music anymore so I am limited to mostly Stranger on the Shore as it is the only song I played enough as a kid (my mother liked it) that the muscle memory is still present!

I KNOW!! I play the flute for highschool band and i work my ass off for every single song!! We play pieces where we have to play super high notes super softly which is almost impossible. i practice almost every night and i still need extra help from my band director. woodwind musicians don’t get nearly enough credit as they should

What really kind of made me stop with that 9 year old is how he played for frickin 40 seconds and everyone loves him already

Imagine if Hilary Hahn came on, played something like Der Erlkönig, without revealing that she is a celebrated and 3 time Grammy award winning violinist until after the judges/audience yawns at her. Edit: after numerous comments pointing out how this scenario is impossible for a number of obvious reasons, I now feel obligated to point out what I felt was equally as obvious. I WAS JOKING.

Since you asked hehe… That’s not Statues, what’s being played in the video is slurred and Statues is played with mostly separate bows. Statues is also generally slower as well. Sorry if this was longer than needed, I just got excited to see someone who knows what Statues is! It’s so cool, I play it all the time just for fun.

I was in the audience for this once, and the first thing that happened before all the performances was the people running it getting g us to fake a bunch of different reactions that they could use home editing the show

Lol we have a 110 year old piano and it has a stool that can survive a nuclear attack let alone the whole piano! Served our family great for 110 year! My great great grandfather got it new.

It is really offensive, really. The pianist and violin girls part really offended me, these judges do hate Classical Music and do not know what a "harmony" really is.

To me a real pianist is one who is dedicated to the art, plays at least 2 hours a day (I do), can do piano techniques properly, etc. Ok, it's 1 am and I'm overreacting, I'm sorry. Fur Elise is not bad for two years without professional training, yes good job.

So if talent shows hate everything except summer or bumblebee, do legit competitions love everything except summer and bumblebee?

it's like that with everything. If you go in with something overplayed you have a very small chance of sounding better or more interesting than anyone else or even not boring the judges with the overplayed crap which lowers your chances instantly cuase your choice is questionable.

Dude, I’m a pianist and when that kid started playing, I set up straight and apologised to ling ling for not having practiced today. The performance was truly sacrilegious.

I feel this same way about singers who go on America’s Got Talent. If you sing a style other than pop they don’t care.

It's unfortunate the judges aren't taking this seriously. I understand it's for entertainment, but yawning just as the man started was incredibly disrespectful and it is disheartening these guys with raw talent aren't getting valid recognition. There's much more to music than how fast or popular something is. The musicians are better off without this joke of a show.

That was just incredible how they thought it was okay to say that. If I was her, I would have just walked off stage in complete and utter shock. Even if she wasn't looking at it as a friendship test, now that they said that, it has become a test to her friendship. While before it could have been simple jealousy issues between them because one got left behind, now it's a whole loyalty issue. That's one friendship destroyed. That just flat out pisses me off.

The fact that the two girls actually sounded good just makes this worse

It's even more sad because in real life, people are usually super impressed by classical musicians/singers, but media such as this portrays classical musicians as boring; as a result, that portrayal bleeds out into people's perception, so they are less inclined to actually want to listen to classical music.

i’ve been in the audience in Norways version of got talent, and i can confirm EVERYTHING is scripted

Things TwoSet inspired me to compose Concerto for two flutes, crutch, broom and garbage scooper OR "concerto applianco" Piano transcription of ziguenerweisen Variations on Bach's D minor chaconne Remeninces de hugenots by liszt orchestral transcription (being worked on now)

You guys should both apply to a “got talent” show and just play literally as fast as you possibly can, making as many mistakes along the way as you possibly could. I can hear the golden buzzer now.

flautist and pianist here. Honestly both hit me hard we need more support for flautists those running notes hit hard 😍

While watching, I was actually yawning but not for the same reason mentioned in the video. I was re-watching the videos (and watching the ones that I didn't see at first) and I was tired and haven't gotten a nap, so I yawned. But if I wasn't tired, I'd be appreciating the music and the musicians. We do so much effort to what we do and most classical musicians are just either yawned off or go unnoticed (unless you're famous). And as someone who does both music (guitar and planning to do piano sooner or later) and a lover of classical pieces, it just makes me sad and dissapointed to how they treat some of the musicians.

So judges prefer aggressive and inaccurate glissandos over actual good playing.

I mean... the twist of "genre" with the 9 year old kid was the "WOW" factor, but otherwise, I really don't think kids should be exposed to "talent" shows, they get a distorted perspective of the real world either thinking they are the worst or the best. Talent is soooo subjective, the things that maybe go with talent is technique and the rest is history.
